“If you have a consistent brand identity & identity in design it could mean and point to the fact that you find value in what you had to say in the first place.” Beautifully put. I do think that developing your personal style is many times just returning to (at some extent) what you’ve always resonated with since you were young. Looking to your past to understand your present.
This is quite helpful in that I never really thought about fashion and personal style in this way and it helps me to think more deeply about why I like a certain piece, style or fit of clothing in the way that I am trying to communicate my personality and values in what I am choosing to wear. Thanks for the video not sure if what I said entirely makes sense smh need to stop being unsure of myself
I absolutely ADORE your videos!! They’re my favorite to listen to while I embroider. It would be really interesting to hear your thoughts on how personal style interacts with clothes/accessories you create yourself. When I’m making something, it can be hard to separate what I like vs. the story I want to tell.
Brilliantly written- I am hooked and am only two minutes in. New sub!! Love your fierce intelligence and fashion chops. As an older black queer woman -I Stan ❤
i really adore this viddeo essay and the direction you took, using philosophical principles of life and imbuing them through design and how they translate to the fashion sphere and then again to personal style
I mean..wow You characterized my undefined feelings and lonely thoughts. Im so impressed and understand your every word clearly. Who gets the idea and can understand beyond of those things, I think they are intellectual and their perception is wide open to create and learn. And this is not given of course..you have to educate yourself for be knowledgeable about and then integrate into your work.
Enlightening! From now on I’ll engage with my everyday outfits in a much more interesting way(now thinking about strength, fragility, mortality, honesty …..yes))
thank you so much for your work I appreciate your research and the fact that I'm being able to understand what you explain even tho I'm not from the fashion world either I have studied fashion. but I do feel interested and you make it more fascinating. love from spain
Postmodernlovers here: I always view the horse-girl as representing subversion in a childlike way. A kid that has uncool style that often is judged because of its or outdated / ill fitting presentation, but ultimately is more personal than the person following trends.
Another great thing about horse girl is that when their style does deviate, there's still a sense of continuity and evolution. Maybe they move on from wearing a siblings hand me downs and get new clothes one day. Those new things likely still abide by the same style codes subconsciously created. If a new code is created that code is an extension of/ updated version of an old one. It's admirable because when you interrupt your personal style to try a trend, that trend might have a set of codes that don't link to your other pieces. This then makes it difficult to put outfits together after a while and the only way out is to either revert back to the old style (creating waste), shift into the new trend fully (more consumption), or to maybe make a whole new set of baby codes that merge the parent styles that don't go together (which can actually be super cool if you can pull it off). I just admire horse girl because its easier than owning a bunch of grails/statement pieces that don't match and its probably more sustainable. I am personally a chaotic mess but I aspire to have a wardrobe that allows me to experience the peace of horse girl. Idk if any of this makes sense btw!
Very interesting… I was thinking how Phoebe Philo also makes me think of the public vs private life philosophy.. it’s a very French type of thinking in my opinion, there’s no other place where that distinction is best thought about, looking at french philosophers… anyways great essay, Rian
I’d love to know your thoughts on “cottagecore” I hate using the word ‘core’ but I cant think what else to use. Just your thoughts on florals, peasant dresses, history inspired. I think because it’s completely opposite to the styles you enjoy talking about or looking at, I’d just be interested what your takes would be.
So I have seen one or two videos of yours. As someone who works in the fashion industry, it is very flattering that you connect fashion and philosophy and I truly think that's great... Just beware that you might be on the verge of taking it too far. I don't know if you are familiar with the ikea scene from Fight Club where he says something like "what kind of dinning set defines me as a person?" and you are reminding me so much of this character but towards clothing. Remmember that its just clothes. Yes, fashion is a form of communication, but don't get paranoid if your nietzsche-kirkegaard ideology isn't showing through your clothes and don't become a slave of that, specially when all that you seem to like is also what everyone else considers that is cool to like (as opposed to trendy). Yes, it is fun to try clothes, they are a way of exploring yourself, but take it with a pinch of salt. With that said, have fun :)
