I am not well versed in fashion at all, but I think your discussion of space is especially interesting because as a plus-sized person who physically takes up space by default (and belongs to the Black community) I'm also fascinated that fashion houses haven't made more of an effort to explore the concept you describe with larger models. Larger people physically live the experience of having to "make themselves smaller" in every aspect of their lives (in character, in demeanor, in appearance, etc) because the amount of space their bodies physically take makes people very uncomfortable. And yet, the concept of space-taking is primarily explored on thinner models who won't "distort" the clothing/visions of the designer. There could be a whole different world of technique, silhouette, and storytelling that just isn't happening because of this phenomena, which goes beyond just making sure larger people feel represented. It's really unfortunate, not advocating that thinner models to be taken out of the equation, but more in a sense that we're really limiting and stunting the ability to explore the concept of space-taking in a well-rounded, comprehensive way.

This.... and also big bodys being marketed as "confident" and "brave" to further emphasize its exclusion, as well as being embraced by certain big body influencers. It's great marketing but doesn't move us forward in regards to open mindedness.

I love that you emphasized the example of black kids in school dressing with intention and clear political implications. it shows that ~thinking~ about how you dress is not necessarily a privileged activity, and in fact intertwined with the expression of any person’s lived reality. We can all tap in!
honouring your past selves is so important, not only in fashion but in general and I love that u mentioned that. so often we want to make drastic 180 changes in the name of the glow up, in the name of becoming our best self, but we forget that we are more of an experience and an essence than any set of descriptive words or any aesthetic. that means we're fluctuating and adapting and that there is no concrete or measurable "best self." all past versions of our selves have contributed to who we are now and we can learn from them and carry parts of them with us, there's no need to antagonise them.

i've realised lately that evaluating new purchases against whether they go with the rest of my clothes has resulted in a wardrobe of basics. these videos are a good reminder that clothing is supposed to be fun and that each item can be seen as telling its own individual story! thank you so much for sharing ur thoughts with us

same especially since putting on weight and physically taking up more space ive avoided buying anything but basics that'll "still look good oversized when i do lose weight" but in doing so ive removed all the joy/fun from my wardrobe as if i dont deserve to wear clothes i like now bc if i wear oversized things i'll be taking up double the amount of space i did when i was thin!
this is so enlightening and explains why 6th grade shy outcast me started wearing platform shoes and i literally never stopped.. it didn't matter what fashion phases i went through, i always incorporated platform shoes in some way because they make me feel like im establishing my presence in a room without having to actually talk to random people(no offense to them its just hard)
so because i dress differently, most people dont expect me to act like them and they dont get angry at me anymore when im just sitting there being quiet

I’ve realized that assimilating myself never kept me safe it just held me back and opened me up to new forms of harm

it’s really interesting as a 6 foot tall woman who grew up overweight to consider how i have been integrating my want to take up less space into my fashion choices and style.
I feel like to an extent “normal” non fashion interested people wear clothes more intentionally than some of the fashionable ones. all ways of wearing clothes are very valid.
I’m talking these working class people, mothers, elderly, people of colour, queer people, people who are intentionally crafting their wardrobes in relation to their personal beliefs, inner world, connections philosophies etc.
Your analysis always hits home in ways I never even consider. I'm a trans guy who used to wear the standard hoodie and sweatpants combo- and still do a lot, but much of my "fashion" beginnings were an interest in passing as a cis male and in a way, idolizing the people that never had to think about their appearance. I recently found freedom in "trying", and crucially found myself gravitating towards structured clothing- I'm pulling a lot from vintage menswear especially that might not take up as much space as something extreme like Tripp pants, but takes up more unconventional space with defined shapes and silhouettes that are less soft than just an oversized hoodie and I would say stick out, combined with other stull like loud obvious DIY stuff and workwear to personalize it a bit.

Wearing things in a slightly unusual way is an easy way to differentiate yourself. Recently, I decided to wear a silk scarf on my head all the time to protect my hair from friction and the elements, and stumbled on an asymmetrical wrap that hides half of my face with the pretty pattern. I've picked up workwear accessories like kneepads, a close-fitting high-vis vest, and kevlar cut-proof sleeves for extra layers. Sunglass frames that convert to fashion frames by flipping up each individual eye. For me, people have noticed those details and have mostly been complimentary about them.

No, ur absolutely right…The way my personal style became 10x more genuine and individualized the moment I accepted I was trans and understood how I wanted to move in this world.
the point you made at 13:00 about philosophy is not only important for personal style but i believe it is important for any artist who is inspired by another artist. i think myself and other upcoming designers who were inspired by the last 2 decades of streetwear, saw what virgil and nigo were doing with screen printed tees and think that we can follow the exact same formula and become them and then get frustrated when it doesn’t work. it’s super important to not be inspired by just the ideas themselves but the type of thinking that allowed the designers or artists to create the idea. amazing video as always Rian!!!!
The want to be seen especially as a black kid is so real and I definitely think there is a subconscious decision. When we Get dressed due to the conditioning in society telling us we are nothing; over compensating in that way

in highschool, i was always very hyper aware of the amount of space i was taking up and the amount of sound i was creating. i liked to wear big coats and unconventional silhouettes and high heels that could be heard down the hallway as i walked. and although i would love the clothes i was wearing, the amount of space/attention i would attract always made me uncomfortable (despite the fact that the attention was usually positive).
as someone interested in astrology, i think that this ties in with the life lessons associated with my aries moon, whereas i’m learning in this life what it means to be comfortable taking up space and making myself known and expressing myself with authenticity.

the part about taking up space is so real for me, Im a small person who feels unsafe in public a lot bc i’ve been stalked before and my often oversized fashion feels very protective and important to me because of my experience

I just wanted to write to say thank you for posting. I always love watching your videos! It has been really fun to engage with fashion in my own way. I haven't been doing anything revolutionary but simple things like making goals to get the cost per wear of my clothing items down to the negatives and generally just enjoying my clothes. It feels so cool to observe what I naturally gravitate towards! but this also means whenever I do go out of my way to show out (wear a bandana or a scarf I like or something) that it is intentional and also the clothes I wear have just become way more cohesive. Its literally because in one of ur videos you talked about production lines for fashion and that really opened my eyes and has helped me evaluate/do research on patterns and fabric quality sooo THANK U
i’m so glad you brought up the point of trying to understand the designer’s philosophy rather than the physical piece that you perceive and just taking that at face value. i personally feel that interacting with art and appreciating the immaterial aspect of it, like the philosophy of the artist that you mentioned or the message behind the piece, is so fulfilling. like it brings interacting with the art to another level, thanks for all of your insights
I’ve thought about this in terms of bodies themselves. I think one reason (among many) that women feel such debilitating pressure to be thin is the cultural expectation for them to take up less virtual space and therefore less physical space. This is especially true for marginalized women/women of color. Choosing to openly take up space with ones body and clothes is an act of defiance as well as self expression.
Think in a different way and the fashion is in your heart--these are the messages that I needed today, and you lifted my spirits. Big thank you!

Love listening to Rian bc there’s always something new that i’ve never taken time to think about. it never really occurred to me how my emotions play into what i wear, and the taking space part of the video really had a eureka moment for me lol. I’m rather tall and skinny and since i’ve been exploring what i enjoy wearing i find the clothes that “take up space” are worn most often when my mentality is to be further away from people, like a buffer. And when i wear more body con pieces i’m allowing people in my space bc i feel comfortable. And the sound aspect too! Lots of a good things to think about 🙌🏽
i did fashion design/object design in art school for a minute before dropping out, and have always dressed (or at least tried to) according to how i feel. the last 8 years i favored a lot of black in my closet, no other colors, and experimenting w some textures and shapes. but last month i had a breakthrough where i realized that this wasn't serving me anymore (esp as a creative) so i've started researching again and i'm now wearing a lot more color than before. i think i was already subscribed to this channel but these videos are so timely for where i am in my life, tysm for your insights 🌹

wow, the things about the black students reminds me of secondary. i’m black and from the uk and it’s really interesting. black students would often have small situations unnecessary escalated, the response usually is some of clothing rebellion. black hair was overpoliced so hair would be dyed or faded, braids were styled with two hair bands or was taken down fully (which wasn’t allowed) large purposefully sagged trousers, wearing shoes loose with feet slightly out so when they walk it makes a lot of noise. blazers were worn inside out, ties were tied on heads or on necks ect. this was often responded to with more escalations and even exclusions but it’s dope to see how clothing can be so intentional and so much more than the colour. seeing condescending usually white teachers get so angry at these things spoke louder than anything.

Agreed. When we are happy in our clothes, we take up just the space we want to. There is something I wear every day, my deceased mother's heavy robe/shift dress with pockets, that feels just the right weight, hugging me in a way she never did- like IOUs coming due. I love the sound it makes as it drapes. I love to sit and watch tv in it. And I love Issey Miyake's Pleats Please collection (and that it continues after his death). Miyake is eminently wearable and practical. As a little boy he survived the bombing of Hiroshima. As a man he made origami-esque clothing that give an air of indestructibility. His pieces are at once small and highly packable, and then accordion out to envelope the wearer. And I don't mind saving up to buy a single piece. I'm never getting rid of them, anyway.

I have never really felt like i fit in anywhere and have always felt like im trying to hide myself from sticking out too much but now i am sick of hiding and i think subconsciously i started reflecting that in the clothes ive been starting to wear ie. Baggy, 2 sizes too big clothing bc i want to let ppl know that I AM here now and i want you to know. :) almost made me tear up thank you for putting that into words for me bc i dont think i would’ve realized it on my own.

thinking of fashion across all our senses is an incredible concept that I never thought about before but also makes perfect sense + now i’m piecing together aspects of my own style that’s still developing but already has clear patterns. I like to be large and quiet-I was super inspired by spy fiction as a kid (gallagher girls were my favorite series) and always wanted to look powerful but colorful and girly.
When I am taking risks with what I wear, I’m often dressed in selectively contradictory clothes. Giant shoes that make me look tall but are mostly plain and very quiet (I like to look a ghost-or maybe even slenderman lmao). I also like really heavy fabrics that are also very plain in pattern and form fitting-I need flexibility, but I love color. I don’t wear many accessories like necklaces, because I want to move silently and alot of tiny noises bothers my senses lmao. I also don’t wear scents at all-I don’t like to be traceable. Putting this all together, I like to look imposing, and like to express my bright personality but also be a bit more sleek and leave more of myself to mystery. Like, lowkey without ppl realizing im lowkey. I’m mostly visual lol

Rian Phin here on UA-cam has made a excellent series of videos on developing your personal style & believes in cultivating your fashion sensibilities over having an “aesthetic.” They also discourage Pinterest for that reason. Once you understand your style philosophies, it doesn’t matter what “aesthetic” you’re going for, your personal style will always ring through.

I think a lot about Hedi slimane and the way how he was in my opinion, one of the first designers to control and dictate the body of a man in the same way that women’s bodies have been historically, dictated by fashion designers
- speaking specifically about his time at Dior. I wonder what that says about space. The idea of literally wearing the skinniest suit possible, the skinniest jeans… you are literally taking up less space so in that way are his ideas and the man that he creates less powerful send someone who wears baggy or even regularly fitting clothing?

This is such a simple way to view fashion. until now I’ve been towing the line for capital, trying to find some aesthetic to FILL the void of my self, but this POV reveals my agency, that market makers have tried to hide. Thinking of the constitutive elements of design, unveils the true beauty/brilliance/genius of fashion/fashionable people: self assertion.

Basic lenses to view composition from. She’s sick, also might give some inspiration for how to “be different” in your fashion. How you embody your clothing/identity. Thinking about how/why you move, how you fashion your presence.
