I went there to fish on a Friday. Not too crowded, about 15 boats for the whole area. People are well behaved, only had one snag with another boat the entire day. The most crowded is the circle of boats floating over the hole. We did plugging early in the a.m. and then switched to dragging roe. Our boat hooked up 8 times, landed 4 big salmon. I'd definitely go during the week and not on the opener or weekend.

How did the salmon fishing go?
when l was a kid in the 70's l would walk through my dad's field to fish a hole on the cowlitz river and cough kings a lot nicer than this, all l had was my Mitchell spinning reel, eagle claw rod, some 3/0 hooks and home cured salmon eggs cured in borax lol, I'm glad l got to see some of the good old days before it became like this, just to many people anymore.

I know a very good spot where these salmon chill and just pile up caught 3 huge salmon in 2 feet water knee size they are all just migrating !! I'm so glad I found it 😊 I hate going to where there is alot of people

Why not catch ocean salmon? These fish made it thousands of miles in some cases and finally survived all the way back to the spawning grounds. Only yo have you yank them for their eggs. The meat sucks up river

I have one bait that SLAYS them all day every day and no one uses it. But it’s nice to see people still don’t think outside the box.

Garage modified Thee prawn hook with a lead mold works better than any bait or lure on the market. You can limit out enough for 10 people

I go every year and we do well! One thing an old Pirate taught me was to never fish the Barge hole and i never have! The girlfriend and buddy of mine killed the kings! Tight lines guys. The Bullship
It ain’t always this crowded. I’ve dished there when there was one or two boats all days with incredible results. I never fish on the opener. Always to many boats.

herring/sardine wrapped qwik-fish is one the most common presentations for salmon fishing out west? and have fun jigging there its over 50ft deep in that hole in some places with heavy current and loaded with snags

Buoy 10 in Astoria Oregon can have 2,000 boats during the season on any weekend. a real Z O O ! ! ! However it's some of the Chinook fishing on the West Coast...

If you go a bit more up before getting to this spot there are a shit load of 4 feet to 6 feet salmon 2 feet 3 feet water stream they are piled up loaded with salmon just went last week and was literally scooping them back to back great day !! Didn't want to be around all the boats

Hello possibly planning on bringing my boat there where do you launch out and how long does it take to get to that spot?
Most people use balls ferry boat launch just upriver. The place is not worth the drive. Most fish up there are zombies. Did it once. Never again.
How to get that plug out from the bank? Triple swivel? What weight and litter length?
Yea no thanks I'll just stick to the klamath river where I know the salmon there is more fresh and they're like 5 miles in from the mouth while salmon from Sacramento river is hundreds of miles away from the mouth! But nice fishing!

Almost a hundred not quite... funny thing is I live and fish in Oroville...the hatchery is 143 miles from the Golden Gate...by the time the Salmon get here they use up just enough body fat to taste a helluva lot better than close to the Ocean...... TRUE! ...I've eaten Salmon in Washington state, Oregon and some of Alaskan Salmon....NOT NEAR AS GOOD TASTING AS FISH FROM THE FEATHER RIVER.....

Nothing like a little serenity and a chance to unwind huh. Just what the doctor ordered, a day of combat fishing. Imagine the arguments/fights taking place that day. Not something to bring the kids out to see.

I fished this area with my friend Dennis Freeman for25 plus years and avoided the barge hole religiously! The guides start there to try and limit out fast so they can book again. Not a fun spot to fish many more enjoyable holes down river and just as many fish to catch if you know how. RIP Dennis I miss you more than you would ever know!!!!!!

I only live 1.5 miles from the barge hole and I’ve never heard of this or fished for salmon I recently got a boat and got into fishing a lot I think this august I will try the barge hole and see if I can catch my first ever salmon !!

that is not northwest California that's northeastern, i5, gridlock city stuff. try prairie creek, mad river, redwood creed/river, the mouth of the klamath river...... get off i5 and give 101 a try!!! there is much MUCH more to catch, see, hunt and just be, in the big beauty of the redwoods of Humboldt, del-norte county's.

The poor salmon have survived several perilous years in the ocean, swam hundreds of miles upstream to accomplish the one ultimate goal in their life to spawn. Only to get a few miles from their destination the coleman national fish hatchery and then swim into a cluster fuck of boats. Dams are being dismantled to help save wildlife while the state of california is trying to build more, wtf? I'd like to know what the limit is and if its being policed, doesnt seem so? The real limit needs to be put on the human population seems to me.This poor world, and its wildlife cant be pushed much more. Too many people making for too small a world. God please stop it.
