  • Let’s start by acknowledging the band members who brought so much of the night’s magnificent sound to these Ed Kuepper classics: Peter Oxley on bass, Alister Spence on keyboards, Mark Dawson on drums and Eamon Dillworth on brass. I’ve seen Ed with a band before (The Saints and The Aints!) and I’ve been to numerous solo shows, but this was the first time I got to experience live those wonderful early songs as they’d been recorded. It was in fact the first live band experience of Ed Kuepper’s solo material since 2009. The tour coincided with the remastering of “Electrical Storm” (1985) and “Honey Steel’s Gold” (1991) and as such most of the night’s 12 songs came from those two albums. It was a difficult choice deciding what I’d take home with me but I finally settled on these five songs:
    King of Vice (00:10)
    Electrical Storm (12:27 )
    Rainy Night (22:41)
    All of These Things (29:38)
Everything I’ve Got Belongs to You (37:45)
I’d love to see Ed touring with this band again after the remastering of some of his other albums but I’m not going to hold my breath. Ed doesn't like to stand still for very long. Once one project has been completed, he moves onto something else. Still, wouldn’t it be great to see “Everybody’s Got To”, “Today Wonder” or “Frontierland” (to name just a couple) given the same live treatment.

This is great! Ed’s wife is my dear long time friend. I have been fortunate to see him probably at least 100 times since 1981 when I saw Clowns support Birthday Party ( that was a gig to remember). Been at almost every gig in Sydney from mid 80s to now. He is a genius and I know every album off by heart. Every gig has been different and wild. A testament to his craft , massive talent and sense of exploration. Some of his best were with Oxley and Wegener at the Vanguard. Unbelievable energy. Just went to Newcastle for one night last Wednesday from Sydney to see him play up there. They were phenomenal. He is also one of the funniest men around. Mark Dawson is an astonishing drummer. Wegener is however my favourite. And Alister is a genius player. Eamon adds the icing on the cake. The Clowns ( versions 1 and reformed) Saints, Yard Goes on Forever, solo, Aints!, Kuepper, Oxley and Wegener have given me so much joy and pleasure over 4 decades. Also saw him with Bad Seeds at All Tomorrow’s Parties and at Opera House. I am a very fortunate 65 year old woman. All Clowns albums have been on high rotation for me since the early 80s. ❤❤❤

Thanks for your wonderful, informative comment. These days social media can fool us into believing that we know our idols better than we do. Personalised emails via mailing lists, Facebook posts (and the occasional personal reply to a comment made) can give the impression that there is some kind of contact between us. Of course, there's not. So it's great to hear from a person who really knows Ed and from the beginning of his musical career too. So many great memories. You are indeed a very fortunate (not so) old woman.
If you haven't already seen it, I too travelled from Sydney to see his most recent tour. You'll find some video from the performance here:

I really love the band he's currently playing with. I hope he's back on stage with them next year. An Aints! reunion would be wonderful too. Thanks very much for commenting.

This was wonderful. Thanks. Love these songs, listen to them almost daily. Great hearing them performed live. Great band. Great energy. Saw him in Sweden once opening for Nick Cave. Been a fan ever since. Wish he could come again.

It was a terrific performance. The whole band sounded wonderful. I've watched/listened to this video numerous times since. I'm so pleased there is going to be a second tour featuring the latest remastered albums. Unfortunately, the Sydney concert won't be at such a great sounding venue. Still I'll be going back for more. Hopefully, he might get back to Europe one day and you can catch him again. Thanks for commenting.

Thanks so much for posting - I came over from the US for 4 gigs on the tour - this was the last one for me. Blinding version of King of Vice - so glad you captured it! Ed and band in superb form.

Your dedication impresses me. I hope you really enjoyed the four gigs. I loved this one. I don't usually record opening songs as I like to get some sound readings and familiarise myself with the stage layout during it. But I really like 'King of Vice' so decided to risk it. However, I was having some doubt about my choice when it just kept going. My camera has a limit on how long it'll video for before over heating. So glad I caught it now. Yes, everyone on stage were brilliant. Thanks for commenting.

I've known/been-a-fan-of Ed for 4 and 5 decades respectively, and I was one of the guys on and around the stage with a camera. We had an agreement - I would shoot the gigs each night, with the exception of KofV because it was such a brilliant opening, and I love the song, so I would just listen. For the Canberra and Sydney gigs, they increased the outtro to six of the refrains from four, and Eamon joked - "If we make it any longer, we won't get any pics from Roy!". Just a fun anecdote :)

      @@Peter_LiveMusicThank you for "risking" it.
Really wonderful as it shows how "into it" Ed and the band were fired up from the get go.
Edmund is a national treasure and KOV really does show his prowess on the guitar.
Ed's music has been in my life for over 45 years and I'm in awe every time I see him perform.

Agree completely with everything that you say Peter.
Remember those fantastic days at the Annandale and other venues in the 80s? Saw him at Queenscliff on Sept 9. Wonderful night. Crowd baying for more. Love to see some of the original Aints material performed again in the future. By the way, wonderful to see the incomparable Mark Dawson back where he belongs.

I was lucky to see Laughing Clowns in Sydney early 80's and saw Ed a few times with his full band in the late 80's. Then didn't see him again until the 2000's either solo or just him with Mark Dawson on drums.

    • @Peter_LiveMusic

Ed's a bit of a musical chameleon. He's continually reinventing himself but at the same time never losing sight of where he's come from. I never saw Laughing Clowns but have caught him at various other stages of his career. You know his live shows are always going to be great. Thanks for commenting.

Sorry to hear about the stay in hospital. I hope it wasn't anything too serious. This was a terrific gig. The City Recital Hall has great acoustics. It was really a treat to see Ed and the band here. Very glad you got to see the set in Springwood. I'm sure a smaller, more intimate venue would have had its own joys. Thanks for commenting.
