What's really ironic about this is that the forward version is all slow and monotoned. It just feels full of sorrow, loss and helplessness, whereas the reversed version feels much more empowering, legendary, heroic and triumphant. It really is a genius piece of guitar creativity.
I see where you're coming from, but I personally think its kinda the opposite. I feel like the forward version is a lot more empowering, whilst the reversed version feels more dark and mysterious in a way. But again, I see where you're coming from :) + both are legendary ;)
Yes! The forward version should've been at the end of Dyers Eve, faded the record out, and if was on repeat, loop back into Blackened. Or, if you're listening to every Metallica album back to back, it would transition perfectly into the first track of The Black Album, Enter Sandman. ... but that's just my thought.
Mr. Opinionated Dude you clearly dont play guitar. You dont upstroke a powerchord if you're just playing long notes at least they wouldnt have done it in that senario. They recorded the first one on here and I believe Jason had the idea to run it in reverse. Edit: They are octaves but it's the same
But it’s not. I don’t know where this idea has come from all of a sudden. If you play the original recording in reverse, it doesn’t sound anything like a normal guitar. EDIT: It has been about a month since I posted the comment above. I just reversed the original song, and I was mistaken: when reversed, the intro does sound "normal". So, maybe the intro on the original is reversed. 🤷♂
I knew it was reversed because the "sucking sound" reminded me of Tomorrow Never Knows by The Beatles Harrison doing the first backwards guitar solo ever recorded (I believe) So many years later when I eventually was able to have a recording device that I could reverse the sound with I decided to record and reverse the AJFA Blackened intro so I could hear what it sounded like forwards and eventually do my own interpretation. Still love doing it on guitar today but the real deal 4me is when you reverse it & play it backwards 😍 IT'S PURE METAL MAGIC. . . & wiithout a doubt one of my most favourite intros of any piece of music ever
@@IvanoForgione a lot of music is a lie it's not done in the moment it's lots and lots and lots of different takes recorded at various different times all spliced together to make one coherent song . . .

My eyes start to cry in the midle, when the reverse overs and starts the real!! It's very powerfull, I think somebody with weak of character can be destroyed by that. Yeah, for anyone who doesn't know, Cliff was the music theorist of the band, and he came up with a lot of the harmony parts of the early records, and that's probably what James was thinking of when he wrote this intro. I have almost no doubt that Cliff would have absolutely loved this intro 1000 percent.

i was right. The first time i listened to this song was around 1991. the intro was melodious but weird. I think i read about this somewhere when metallica revealed the secret behind this mysterious intro. Genius.
This is awesome - best intro to an album ever. I think part of what makes it so cool is it starts on the root notes’s 5th rather than the root note, giving it kinda of gateway feel into the heavier beginning of the Blackened. It’s such a great way to build anticipation and probably why it sounds better reversed.
Musical masterpiece. Everything flows together perfectly, the heavy but melodic intro is just simply amazing. I'm addicted and I have to inject this into my blood at least 4 times a day in order to survive.
Agreed, in all honesty had the song followed this sort of melody/tune the whole way through it could possibly have been a lot heavier and deeper as a song. I get what they were going for I suppose but the complete change in the song is a little jarring. Imagine a whole song that just had this type of wailing melody through it.
Disagree. As good as it is forward the backwards riff is amazing. What a unique intro. My favorite Metallica song. Has been from the moment I heard it on release day!
Trivium, in Ember to Inferno, "stole" the idea of the reversed intro from Blackened. In fact the song "Inception, the bleeding skies" is actually the ending riff of "When all light dies". So, imagine the Blackened intro (not reversed) as the ending of the song, it would have been amazing
This is perfect! I've heard a few other people attempt to replicate the intro and they came close but you get the cigar my friend! I'm a guitar player so I notice details and intricacies of pieces like this and you nailed it!!! Great job!
I would just like to imagine Cliff, Dave, James and Kirk playing the intro forwards, and then the scene shifts and instead we have Jason, Rob, James and Kirk playing the backwards version.
Idk why but the Blackened intro was always just so satisfying. Just the melody both backwards and forwards *love it* Fun fact: I used to have it set to as my alarm for a couple years.
I have watched this so many times today. I've wanted to see this done for many, many years! Not sure why it JUST popped up on my feed, but glad it did!
This is incredible layering. But it shows just how pin sharp the Metallica playing is, as some of your slides sound a lil choppy and sludgy when flipped. No shade, this is fuckin amazin, just total respect to the real version as it’s virtually impossible to hear the flip even when you know it’s there
Like someone else already said, I could watch this over and over again. In fact I've probably watched it about 20 times since discovering it a day ago. I honestly never knew that intro was played in reverse on the album. So rad.
Funny how the compression isn't very noticeable going forward but really comes out when reversed. Great job, as other say I can listen to this on repeat all day.
