- With stage IV, the breast cancer has spread to other parts of your body. Often the bones, brain, lungs, or liver are affected. Because multiple areas may be involved, focused treatments like surgery or radiation alone may not be enough. Treatment of stage IV doesn’t cure the disease. But by shrinking the cancer, it can often slow it down, help you feel better, and let you live longer. Patients with stage IV breast cancer may live for years, but it’s usually life-threatening at some point.
As with primary breast cancer, treatment for stage 4 breast cancer, such as chemotherapy or radiation, can often be harsh and unforgiving. But dealing with an incurable illness and the side effects of its treatment aren’t the only burden MBC patients have to bear. Many also have to educate others about their disease, explaining over and over that no, the scans and blood tests and treatments will never come to end. No, the metastasized breast cancer in their lungs is neither lung cancer nor linked to smoking. No, staying positive and “just fighting hard” isn’t going to beat back their late-stage disease.
Stage 4 breast cancer can go into remission, meaning that it isn’t detected in imaging or other tests. Pathological complete remission (pCR) indicates a lack of cancer cells in tissues removed after surgery or biopsy.
But it’s rare to take tissue samples while treating stage 4 breast cancer. This could mean that although treatment has been effective, it hasn’t completely destroyed the cancer.
Advances in stage 4 breast cancer treatments are helping to increase the length of remission.
