It wasn’t breast cancer, but my husband’s first oncologist said “Sell everything and take a trip around the world, because you’ll die from this in about a year.” We didn’t do that, of course, and my husband lived another 27 years, cancer free.

One lovely comment, not mine: My husband had a stage 4 lung cancer, and doctor said he would only have few months to live. We have changed our live style together by changing our diet (Whole food plan base diet), exercise, and be in the sun for about 1 hr/day. To our surprise, his tumor in the brain shrink then disappear in just 2 short months. His doctor had no words on how we could reverse cancer naturally.

Òne of my dear friends passed earlier this year after living with breast cancer for almost 15 years. She had 3 daughters who were aged 5, 8 & 11. Once she got the diagnosis that she was stage 4, all she prayed for was to get her girls to adulthood...any more would be a bonus. She was 43 when diagnosed and passed at almost 58. She had a lot of difficult months and years during that time but she also had alot of just wonderful normal time living her life & raising her girls. Her girls are all now young adults in their twenties missing their Mom but also thriving thanks to her and how she was able to raise them. My wish is that you get many more years with your precious boys. My friend defied the horrible odds stacked against her for a long time & had a wonderful life & so can you.

@@Cwgrlup there are way to many circumstances and variables involved in stage 4 breast cancer for any doctor, unless it's in the liver, to know if it will kill you. As someone with breast cancer involved in at least a dozen groups of other women with the disease, I'm aware that advances in the medicine are happening all the time. One of my best friends was told "it would kill" her and is now in her mid 80s - 30 years after she was told this. My own partner was in palliative care for 3 months, the doctors had given up, but then a doctor in a another health care system discovered a trail they knew nothing about. (And this was one of the top cancer centers in the nation). So yeah, if it's absolutely the end of the road, inform the patient. But Stage 4 is not necessarily a death sentence. You can live 20, 30 more years and lots of other things can kill you in the meantime.

I am stage 4 mTNBC, I want my oncologist to be honest, straightforward and to never give me false hope. With stage 4 it is most likely what, I will die from. Yes, I COULD live many years, but with triple negative being the most aggressive breast cancer with much fewer treatment options, it is best, for me, to accept this is my likely outcome. Less than 20% live 5 years once it has progressed to metastatic. To say a doctor should “never say……” if an opinion that works for you, but not for me.

My discovery, this August, was an inverted nipple which made me search for the lump. The biopsy showed Stage 1 and if everything goes as planned, I'll have the lumpectomy in November.
    *Update*
Surgery went well, my Doctor is confident that she got all the cancer in one scoop, and, the Sentinel nodes that were removed show no signs of spreading. Now onto 16 treatments of radiation when I've healed.

Abigail: I'm so sorry to hear of your diagnosis but you seem to be handling it all well. I am in exactly the same boat. I was dx with stage 4 MBC just under 2 yrs ago. Mine is in lymph nodes, lung, ribs, spine and humerus. I did IV Taxol and radiation for my ribs and humerus and had spinal surgery to remove a huge lumbar tumor. I'm now on hormone treatment (Verzenio and Letrizole) with no further spread of my cancer. I'm in a holding pattern, still upright and active and moving and not giving up. All we can do is move forward and stay positive. I've heard that some people can live for 15 or more years with MBC. It is all individualized and depends on how our bodies handle the meds we're given. The only complaint I have is my constant fatigue. I've never been so tired (all the time) in spite of gentle exercise, getting enough sleep and eating well. I'm not at all in pain at this time so I'm happy for that.
Praying for you and your family and keep us posted how you're doing.

In 2017 after a recurrence of BC, my second genetic test showed a CHEK2 mutation linked to BC. I also had another mutation linked to colon and thyroid cancer. We stepped up monitoring those and, sure enough, 6 years later I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. We shouldn’t be afraid of genetic testing. It saves lives.

I had uterine Cancer back in 2013 I was Cancer free for about eight years. Then breast Cancer in my right breast. So I had both of my breasts removed completely. Because I didn't want to get Cancer in my left breast. Then I didn't want to do radiation. I didn't have any Cancer until I had the uterine Cancer. I miss being healthier & having better quality of life. This has been a big adjustment for me then Cancer has disrupted my life.

All cancers stem from a genetic mutation, but most of these mutations happen during life; they are not inherited mutations. When this patient discusses genetic mutations, she is referring to the 12% of cancers that arise from inherited mutations. Patients should have TWO genetic panels after being diagnosed with cancer: the first is test the patient for inherited genetic mutations, so that he or she can advise family members about early screening, etc., and the second panel is to check the actual genetics of the cancer, itself. The actual genetics of a cancer, and which mutations exist, determines which treatment will work on which patient, so that second genetic panel of the cancer, itself, is very important.

I was on a cot with my 88 yo mom in the hospital. It was flat so breast at that angle. I put my arms across because I was cold. There it was. A lump. I was quickly diagnosed and had a lumpectomy and radiation. My mom went from the hospital to a very nice nursing home. That was a huge relief. I am an only child. My children lived out of town. She was safe. I could take care of me. She lived to 90. Still walking on her walker, singing and playing bingo the day she quickly passed away. Go forward 6 years. All mamograms and oncology manual checks good. My cat fell off the headboard going in the window and fell partly on me. The pain in my breast took my breath away. I grabbed it out of reflex. A lump extremely close to my scar. Breast cancer again but not a recurrence. A second primary tumor. A totally different and new one. I was shocked. I couldn't believe I had another one in the same breast. It had only been 9 months since my last good mamogram. I insisted on a PET which showed no spread. My Doctor said he was doing genetic testing. I have a granddaughter. It showed no mutation. Now since I have seen this I will ask for specifics. No breast cancer in my mother, grandmothers or aunts. I had a first cousin who died at 50 with MBC. I had a mastectomy which did not heal due to radiation cell damage. Had a debridement 2 months later and I have healed. I googled and looked at the percentage of people who die of a second cancer. It was not pretty. I am 72. I have lived life, had 2 children and one precious grandchild. Traveled the world and was an RN for 40 years. I cannot imagine the pain for a young mother like you. When I am at the breast center or my oncologist I see young women with a patient bracelet and my heart breaks. I am proud for what you have done for you and your family fighting so hard. Well done.

So anyone wondering why they aren’t doing screening earlier is younger women have milk ducts still open and large! I had a lump and my doctors amazing and immediately sent me for a scan. It was nothing. But the ultrasound lady showed me how milk ducts looks similar to lumps and it would be hard . And only like 1% of breast cancer is in women under 40. But with sooo many women taking birth control (and hormones in our food in the US 😢) you up the chances for all cancers but especially the female one. If you can try family planning via tracking your cycle (if you have a normal cycle) much healthier for you. Your body doesn’t need chemicals and hormones and needs to get its period every month to be healthy ❤ stay strong girlies
