It’s hard not to shed a tear seeing performances from Justin like this. Truly heartbreaking that he gone. Such a special soul that I wish more people knew about. 😢
I watch the videos of this performance pretty often, particularly this song. I miss JTE, but I'm so happy to have this document of how otherworldly amazing a talent he had and the love of music that channeled through his performances. He gave us a lifetime's worth of amazing songs. As Bob Johnston (the late producer) would've said, Justin Townes Earle had the holy ghost about him.
Music just flows through this guy. It's as natural as breathing. If you can't see the talent here I feel sorry for your ears. This performance is nothing short of perfect.
This video inspired me to pick up the guitar again after years of not playing. Justin was a huge inspiration to me. RIP man, enjoy that great big gig in the sky
Best story I have is I was in Pontiac Michigan playing silver strike at this bar called callahans and he was playing golden tee, didn't know him from a hole in the ground, we talked for a moment about arcade games, likes and dislikes then he walked away, 30 min or so later he was on stage blowing my mind. Best night ever period, bought his cd on the spot and he is one of if not the most favorite artist I listen to. Thank you Justin.
A GREAT talent ! Steve Earle had to be so proud and maybe just a tinch jealous because Justin was Fierce with the guitar and such a good singer .Just like his Daddy. The whole thing makes me SAD to know he died so young . REST IN PEACE!
Sad to hear of his passing. I saw him live in Houston opening for Social Distortion. He blew me away with this song, and the little anecdote before playing it about Lightnin tapping his foot so hard a bottle of peach brandy fell out. Thanks for the music and memories Justin
Thats awesome I love social distortion and I never had a clue they had toured together. It makes more sense that Mike Ness and Johnny Two Bags are going to be at his 40th birthday tribute show in Nashville. Justin and Steve are my cousins . I've only hung out with jt a few times like a family reunions . I remember him being a social d fan and now they are covering his music at that show . Super excited to be on the guest list for this show . Edit: which got postponed.
Next time you see Steve ask him why he’s an anti-gun douchebag who only became one after he left his gun under his bed while he was nodding off on heroin and Justin found it. Blame the gun for your dumbass decision, good job
They ain't no telling how far this man would've went in the music industry. He was so gifted, steeped in his father's music from birth.... I feel the loss every time I hear him play... Bet he's picking at the gates of heaven right now😢
I've always told people who don't "get" the blues ....yes, it's easy to play note wise, but the FEEL you need to pull it off and make it authentic and actually move people. This video is the epitome of that, he puts everything he has into it...and for the short time that we as watchers experience it, it makes us feel good or sad or whatever but it makes you feel something. That is the blues.
I was lucky enough to see Mr. Earle front row after the release of Harlem River Blues. My grandfather's generation had Hank Williams, my father had Johhny Cash and I'm so blessed to have Justin TOWNES Earle. R.I.P big bro ❤
The bass line in his playing is the tightest I've ever heard. On guitar. Especially w that tempo beat on the e string. Some ppl don't dig it, but they're misding out. This is the best of this song. Vocals too
Hands down his best performance, if not the best blues performance I’ve seen. He knew how to make every note ring all at once and sounded damn good doing it.

Probably a long time spent with travispicking. This seems to be a bit of a looser adaptation. He's got three things going; A thumb downstroke over the top strings, a finger stroke up and down that hits the bottom/middle strings, and a finger pick over the bottom 2-3 strings. Thumb stroke down x2. Up flick. Slap. (Get this rhythm going.) Once you have that ingrained, fit the finger picked melody in between the flicks and slaps.
Colby Paradiso Jesus I just spent two weeks trying to work it out (fairly amateur player here) thanks for spelling it out - that’s what I ultimately ended up doing but I wish I’d read this comment sooner lol
@@fearitselfpinball8912I'm not sure, It sorta sounds like a loop but that might be all him... scary I know. Read the other comments of people who've seen him live. I've always thought of him as a great songwriter and a pretty damn good guitarist, but damn... he made that guitar sound huge in a way not a lot of people can.
I showed this video to my adult daughter (who never heard of JTE) and told her he's playing the Aladdin Theatre (2018) and your dad won't go with me and I don't know of anybody else who would go. She bought us 2 tickets right there that night as a Mother's Day gift to me. Still to this day she tells me how magical that night was. And it was MAGICAL. She mourned Justin's passing with me. I'm so thankful to have shared that night with her and my heart still aches for all the music that could have been and all the people who hadn't the chance to discover him. RIP JTE
Haven't stopped listening to this guy since i stumbled on to him pushing a year ago fucking amazing so so so very talented im impressed beyond words with his style and musical ability

I saw him absolutely scream this out in London about a month ago. An absolute privilege to share a room with the man for a couple of hours - one of the finest performances I've ever seen.
Just discovered him, now he's gone. Heard the Appleton's in Bakersfield last Friday night - live stream from the Fox Theater. Lauren Appleton sang "My starter won't start" She did him proud. She's devastated today. So sad, so young, so tragic. So much talent.
Mr. Earle’s pain shows so much in this performance is hard to watch. Maybe it is my pain. I didn’t discover his musical genius until I heard Pacific Northwestern Blues on the radio. Not even close to the original Lightnin' Hopkins!
