    In the uk as gas engineer we are responsible for a correct install for flueing and gas connections. WE CAN NOT LEAVE IT CONNECTED if not to code. Just can’t believe you just leave it like that.

    Well I can say one thing though I am a lead man on site for a builder contractor
    But today I can honestly say I was impressed with the workmanship of a HVAC company on a new construction here in Greenville South Carolina
    I've been on multiple job sites for my boss and rarely see quality in the HVAC field here in the great upstate of South Carolina and yes I do know you are a master license HVAC in South Carolina the upstate is about 3 plus hours away for more from where you want to be

    LOVE this video!! the XR-80 is a greta training furnace.. almost every house builder in my area (ohio) installed these as standard fare from the early to mid 00's.. my whole neighborhood of 1000 homes built in the original phase has one.. theres one in my house (that I swapped out in the first few months I got the house new.. it got relegated to a basement furnace).. I have replaced numerous HSI's in my nbeighborhood for people.. I keep a couple of these in a drawer at all times.. my XR80 and my american standard 2 stage 95%er use the same HSI... ha! many of these old XR's are coming out nowadays but still a nice easy furnace to train on.. that customer better hope their blower motor doesnt go.. not sure how you'd get the assembly out.. only thing I train a little differentl;y is I always say foillow the sequence.. so heat-call, inducer, pressure switch, ignitor.. so I wouldve looked at the board and saw the light flash continuous which omn trane usually means normal run..(pressure switches closed) and I wouldve gone for the HSI test before testing the gas valve.. and maybe because when i was in the industry at least 75% of my TRANE calls were HSI's... P.S. I started watching some of your vids in my monile office Bus thats recently been repaired and put back into service.. the intro music sure sounds great on the 1000 watt dual 12's pumpin thew bass :)

    They have some water heaters under 40,000 that use a 3 inch exhaust. Bradford White. The skinny ones with the old style gas valve. I see them installed all the time to replace old water heaters with a 3 inch pipe. They are smaller capacity but many people would gladly trade capacity for not having to redo the vent.

    • @PipeDoctor
      @PipeDoctor  10 місяців тому

      Yeah true but they aren’t easy to locate and most “plumbers” have no idea about the code

  • @throttlebottle5906

    those trane 80% of that era always condensed in the flue pipe and rusted them away. I think part of it is short cycling and excessive post purging(maybe pre-purge too).
    every single unit I've seen does just that to the point of multiple holes and the pipe/elbows needing replaced multiple times over the years(analyzer, gas pressure all shows it's working perfect)

    Mike- being a Trane dealer, you should have checked that heat exchanger. I’d bet if you used a camera and looked down through the high limit there would have been a burner inlet crack in the heat exchanger. Good training video for the new kids though👍🏻

    Good video for new techs to watch , showing step by step diagnostic of no heat. Those folks definitely need a chimney liner if they are keeping that old Trane for any length of time. Your thoughts on why do they continue to sell 3” venting for water heaters ? Yeah the installers from Home Depot are dreadful. I’m not sure that gas appliances of any kind should be available for sale to consumers. 👍🇨🇦

      Becuase the gas line can actually rip and when it rips it starts leaking wich be very dangerous ! Thats why you have to use hard pipe it's safer I do hvac and plumbing myself I was always told take your time on the job and do not hurry it becuase when you start rushing through it can lead to mistakes always take your time ! And my advice for you is to start using hard pipe so it's not a liability !

    Hey Mike,
    New Sub, and new Trane XR 80 owner.
    Quick question, if the blower motor is running at all times even with thermostat set at Auto on the fan settings, or with the thermostat removed completely, I assume that would be a bad high pressure switch correct?
    Is that something that can be serviced or is it a replacement only part?

  • @edp.4475
    @edp.4475 10 місяців тому

    Trane 80 volt ignition will 110 volts or less later generation switch to 120 volts which will read 120 volts

      411.1 Connecting Appliances
      Except as required by Section 411.1.1, appliances shall be connected to the piping system by one of the following:
      Rigid metallic pipe and fittings. Space heaters and water heaters shall be connected using rigid piping and fittings only. Use of semirigid (flexible) metallic tubing, fittings, appliance connectors or quick-disconnect devices is not permitted for this application.

    • @Ariel1S
      @Ariel1S 10 місяців тому +1

      @@PipeDoctor Oh interesting - I did some googling, and that appears to be the code only in NY city. Everywhere else allows it which is why I didn't see anything wrong with it. In fact in a TON of places not only is corrugated/semirigid allowed, it's *required* because it's safer in an earthquake.

    In Ontario Canada if your working on a gas appliance and you see violations i.e. the water heater, gas fireplace etc you are obligated by law to either repair the offending appliance right away or lock it out. Your in a whole lot of do do if you don't and something happens. TSSA will revoke your licence.
