    Gripping episode, like a Saturday morning matinee. Will he survive, will his head be knocked off. Tune in next week folks.

    That opening pan shot showing the Volvo grill on the Merc made me spit my tea out.. very funny.

    Lmao at the grille on the Merc 🤣🤣🤣 my nan’s C3 went through front springs like you wouldn’t believe. You did a great job fella, there is something very scary about a compressed coil spring like nothing else. I felt so nervous for you.

    Known as Widow Makers. The earlier W123 had a bend in them like Robin Hoods bow whilst under normal suspension compression. Terrifying compressing them enough with even the proper tools. Felt like I needed one of those robots that disarm bombs to do the job.

    😂That front grill is killing me😂
    Great work video, springs are just pure evil 😈, nicely done 🤗

    Exactly this tensioner once brought me to the hospital. Luckily my left hand survived. But I never would do this work by myself again. :D

    I watched this whilst cowering behind the sofa with my fingers in my ears , and my bottom suitably clenched 😮

    Those cheap spring tools are ok, if you use them properly. You have to unbolt the bottom mounting of the shock from the beginning and also you have to put piece of wood between fender and rotor, it helps not to push up knuckle and gives you enough ability to compress the spring properly.

    Impact on a spring compressor is terrifying. Especially the outside clamp style...when/if they shift you see your life flash before your eyes

    • @zzoinks
      @zzoinks 10 місяців тому

      I've heard not to use an impact, it is too strong and can lead you to accidentally tighten the spring compresors unevenly. What do you think?

  • @JustFixIt99
    @JustFixIt99 11 місяців тому +4

    Nicely done. The hubcap face shield had me laughing. I've heard a little grease on the threads of the compressor makes it a lot easier to compress the springs, not that you appeared to have much issue.

      Thanks 🙂

    • @zzoinks
      @zzoinks 10 місяців тому

      Surely the grease on the threads is required by the spring compressor instructions? Just wondering since I could imagine damage happening to the spring compressor if the threads are not lubricated. Maybe that's only a worry if they are used many times over their lifespan. Not really the same thing but an Air Alaska airplane crashed since they hadn't been lubricating the "jackscrew" controlling the elevators of the plane and it caused the threads to break loose.

    Those W210s are fun, when they rust badly enough the front spring cups rip out of the frame!
    Also a feature on the W202 C-class I think.

    Done many a spring now but i was exactly the same as you when i first did a spring....proper crapping myself!
    The more you do the easier you feel about it,,,just don't get complacent with them, still got to treat them with respect!

  • @togst

    Don't forget to do the safety squint! At least you found a quality tool for the job. I wanted to use the same style compressor when I changed the springs on my Amazon, but it doesn't have an access hole below in the rear. Tried some old school "single hook" compressors first, but got a bit too uncomfortable as they can easily slide off. Found a compromise with some double hook style compressors that has less chance of sliding off, with an additional safety lock.

    • @zzoinks
      @zzoinks 10 місяців тому

      Which model did you use? Thanks! I am debating if it's better for me to give the parts I have to a mechanic for them to use their professional grade spring compressor and assemble it for me. The fact that super expensive professional spring compressing tools exist makes me nervous, since why would those need to exist if the manual cheap ones we can use are safe enough?

    Jeebus, I thought the 225€ Biltema spring compressor was a bit expensive! I should probably get a Klann style compressor though, my current set of two compressors made of a connector nut and a spacer with welded hooks stacked on a long M12 bolt is beyond sketchy.

  • @Phiyedough
    @Phiyedough 11 місяців тому +5

    I would expect the old springs to be a bit shorter as they can sag over the years.

    Those Mercedes front springs are just ridiculous 😂 Shouldn’t be a problem with that quality tool you got, though. I’ve also struggled with the positioning of spring compressor so many times, and not only with Mercedes… Make sure those spring top mounts are good… As you probably already know, they do tend to rust completely off the chassis…

    I know someone who was changing the springs on his race car when the compressor broke…fortunately it didn’t kill him as it was a glancing blow that pealed back the skin on his forehead…You have every right to feel nervous

    Better be save than sorry with these springs... the one time i did them on my Borgward I almost had a cross member in my face - and they didnt even look compressed in the first place

      It's crazy isn't it!! I think in future for the coil over strut type on the Volvos I'll just take the strut to a garage and let them swap the springs instead 😅

      Ah damn. I once saw a guy get hit by a spring, it was in a Jaguar with a similar set up to this, he didn't use a tool just loosened some suspension arms to remove it but it jumped out of the car and floored him, he was okay just a bit dazed!
