Speed Test | Racing the slowest and fastest horses for science | Red Dead Redemption 2

  • Edit: A few people are wondering why the Thoroughbred and Mustang are saddled while the Tennessee Walker isn't. This was done on purpose so as not to add any extra points of speed on the TW. I was aiming to test what the difference was between the slowest horse available against the fastest horse for curiosities sake.
    Disclaimer - All testing was done in story mode. Unfortunately, horses in online are speed capped in free roam!
    Rockstar hasn't released any patch notes in regards to horse speed adjustments at the time of making this video so we can only assume speed is more or less the same for online and story mode.

      Victoria R I agree. In almost all my previous playthroughs I’ve upgraded horses endlessly and in the one where I stuck with a horse it was the palomino Standardbred...but right now I’m doing a playthrough with the original Tennessee walker and honestly? I barely notice that he’s slow. I’ve still won every race I’ve been challenged to do and done every speed challenge in the horsemanship challenges with him and done so very successfully. He’s not a bad little horse and he looks so unique!!!!

      i was skeptical for awhile because before my main horse was a morgan, granted she was maxed but when i bought an arabian in chapter 4 while he had better handling and overall endurance and health i didnt notice much of a speed difference, only slightly and i guess this test kinda proves that speed isnt everything which i never focused on speed much anyway but i thought itd be nice to have a faster horse, i think the other horse stats matter more such as courage and bravery and their health stats since i see alotta gunplay, its nice how they have at least 1 horse for every play style

    The speed stat isn't all that important to me, most of the time I take my time getting around. Sometimes I'll gallop but most of the time I trot or even walk. But it was interesting to see your test. A horses courage is probably most important to me, I don't want to be thrown into a predator while out in the wilderness.

      I agree, my friends and I are huge advocates of using what you like or love in comparison to what's "meta" or best in the game. • @FEVB
      @FEVB 4 роки тому +4

      DarthWall275 there is a significant amount of horse travel in this game. Over an entire playthrough the speed difference is very important as it will add up considerably.

    • @vizualwarrior129
      @vizualwarrior129 4 роки тому +10

      FEVB like the dude said though, unless you’re a speed runner, the speed of a horse doesn’t really matter at all. You’re talking about 7 seconds which isn’t noticeable at all in game. This game isn’t made to be played like you’ve gotta take a shit so you gotta hurry up. You probably spend more time eating with every different animation there is to it than you can’t think of and all of those add up but they’re not noticeable. Relax, take it slow, and pick whatever horse you think looks coolest (or whichever is the most stable) because those few seconds won’t matter. (Again, unless you’re a speed runner)

  • @gabrielxavier3175
    @gabrielxavier3175 4 роки тому +160

    Acceleration, endurance and fearlessness are probably the most important stats.
    How many times have you been riding around New Elizabeth and Ambarino looking for some stupid side mission or that bounty or this pelt.
    And out of nowhere you are facing wolves and bears, the arabian would be the first one to run without you on top of it.
    The Ardennes or the Turkoman? Don’t think.
    So for me, if you are hunting & exploring, the arabian is basically useless.
    But if you want to rob a bank or get out of the town because law is upon you?
    You betcha boy those arabian are gonna get the job done.
    So, the horse mechanics in this game is so deep that you don’t have a “perfect” horse, it’s just a matter of preference and also a matter of what you are doing in the game.

    • @vizualwarrior129
      @vizualwarrior129 4 роки тому +9

      Gabriel Xavier acceleration is even more useless than speed tbh. Endurance, fearlessness, and health are probably the most important. If you’ve had a really high bounty before you’d know that those bounty hunters and lawmen spawn right on top of you and they have zero regards for animal life. They’ll shoot you and your horse dead without a second thought. I’ve had my Strawberry coat Ardenne go from 10/10 health to a solid 1 or 2/10 health within seconds. Same thing with my Turkoman. The law is ruthless and relentless once you get to the higher levels of bounties. I can’t even imagine how quickly a thoroughbred would die in that situation. You can run away and shoot at the same time for the best chance at escaping the law but I like to stand my ground and fight and I need a strong tanks horse for that which is why I prefer the ardenne or turkoman. Ultimately like you said it does come down to preference and people’s play styles but I think that the speed and acceleration stats are kinda irrelevant (unless you’re a speed runner because every speed runner knows that the 7 second difference shown in the video is MASSIVE) meanwhile health, temperament, and endurance are far more important.

Sanders on the Nokota to spawn) and didn't get the last speed bar. This has been driving me nuts and I swore when I had time I would do another playthrough and farm the lady in Lemoyne encounter and get it done. Well, I did. And now I can get across the map 3.1 seconds faster. One thing I would note is that the speed increases with every gait and the 9-10 speed horses can amble and trot as fast as the others gallop. Saved me some X mashing.

    I think the map size, and how the passage of time is scaled in relation to how long it takes to cover distance( like an IRL mile vs a game mile)plays a part in them not making horses drastically faster.
    The time scale would be weird if a horse was like 30 seconds faster.
    That and I think the render speed of the world is too slow for a much faster horse to run in, also. We'd probably fall through the map or crash our horses into trees and stuff from instantaneous pop up.

    It didn’t feel that different as far as speed went on a Thoroughbred. I however fell in love with the brindle coat. Such a gorgeous and agile horse. The only times she’s bucked me off is when a predictor is at her hooves. The only real perk as far as stats is the acceleration and race handling. Other than that, stats can screw it!! So I switched to a tiger striped bay called Gilly recently, because my fox was driving me nuts. Every stone or gunshot it seriously had a tantrum.
    And it's been great, Gilly plows through everything like a champ, has kicked a cougar into the abyss and only fears crocs and especially pissed off grizzlies, anything else she will treat posture (not sure what else to call ot but she doesn't kick me off but just makes a bunch of angry noises).
    I ended up not making the no water challenge from van Horn to Blackwater on my Arabian and made it with Gilly even tho I got her stuck on a bridge edge. Just because the Arabian bounced of at least 5 rocks and then had a big old trip when I ran passed an ambush...
    Must say Gilly has her stats maxed out unlike the bay in your test, she starts slow but once you get that butter melted she's slippery and smooth through just about everything.
    That's the horse you need and want for some frustration free exploring.

    I think the Andalusian is probably the best horse to have if you like bigger horses but don’t like how low stamina most big horses have. The Andalusian have great stamina and excellent heath a full bar. And it’s pretty fast too. So if your interested in big horses that are not afraid of anything I recommend the Andalusian. Also there is a pinkish whitish coat near a waterfall I forget where just look it up but it’s the most beautiful horse I’ve ever seen and I actually switched out my White Arabian for him. And another great horse I recommend once you reach chapter 4 I think is for a mission it’s the white Dutch Warmblood. It has excellent health and it’s pretty fast. Highly recommend those horses.
