A two bit gangster living above his means, I like to imagine that Liviticus Corwall owns every type of horse except Dutch's, like Dutch is holding on to some tiny part of the rich lifestyle he so desperately wants. I think its also fitting that at the end Dutch abandoned his horse to flee into the mountains. Leaving behind his largest status symbol and companion to save his own skin.
Another thing about Micha’s horse Baylock. While I myself haven’t played Red Dead one, apparently Micha’s horse bears a striking resemblance to ‘The Dark Horse’ that appears when you have the lowest possible honor, which once again is very fitting for a character such as Micha Bell.

It’s also important to note that some of the horses represents some part of some character’s cultural background and identity. For example, Charles is half indigenous and half black, so giving him an Appaloosa is perfect. In real life, Appaloosas have a rich history of being bred and ridden by indigenous people, however the Nez Perce people are credited for creating the breed :)

I found it funny that the leader of the gang has a tiny, barbie like horse. Tends to look a bit odd when the others around him has larger horses. BUT it suits Dutch because he don't need to "overcompensate" to make himself feel big. He already has such high thoughts of himself.
the war horse is black with a silver main and tail. johns horse old boy is a dark bay color with a silver tale and main. it's much larger than the war horse, old boy is a hungarian halfbred yet when you put another HA by it it looks massive
Don't forget Buel, our beloved. A mirror of Arthur himself as said in the game. And it fits the game where almost every member has it's own breed too. Arthur and John both having 2 large, stubborn and brave horses.
I've got to disagree on that, and not just because I can't stand Buell as a horse. Buell is slow, spooky, and completely unreliable. He literally killed his previous owner because he was frightened, and he still bucks my Arthur off whenever he sees a wolf even at level 4 bonding, leaving him to fend for himself while Buell fucks off to the middle of nowhere with a flashing stamina bar. It's basically the opposite of an honorable Arthur. He'd go to great lengths to defend those he's loyal to, and never shies from a conflict out of fear. I wouldn't trust Buell in an open pasture on a nice sunny day; a leaf might blow by on the other side of the field and make him lose his fool head.

I think that Dutch chose The Count as his primary mount because it represents what he's always pretended to be; elegant, high society, expensive, rare, and reliable and trustworthy. I don't think he's ever been a well-collected and altruistic leader. He just finally had his mask crack under pressure in the end of this game. Also, totally agree on the appaloosa fit for Charles. I love that man. I had an appaloosa growing up named Arrapahoe that I trusted riding in dangerous mountainous environments full of predatory animals and treacherous slopes, and he was just a super reliable and steady fella.

He reverted to his true selfish, brutal and narcissistic nature and fooled himself into thinking that anyone who didn't agree with his methodology was a traitor. He's always been like that, though. He thought he was the only one who could lead the gang to success, and started to lose control of himself when he failed them over and over and over. He's always "valued loyalty," or rather, he condemned anyone who dared to question him.
ANOTHER thing about Baylock. His white face is called a bald face in the horsey realm. Like a bald face lie. Additionally, a more artistic perspective could be viewing the face as a front. Seemingly pure up front, but everything behind the face is dark.
I think they shouldve made a horse stable in mcfarlanes ranch that would contain old boy, the count, baylock and maybe brown jack or maggie cuz tumbleweed has silver dollar, boaz, ennis and trewlanys horse cant rememer the name
You forgot to mention Sadie's second horse - Hera, a Dark Bay Roan Mustang that appeared in a few cutscenes in 1907. I think it's important to say this, after all, the name represents the Greek Goddess Hera, who seems to represent Sadie in both personality and character development as she is a different person after avenging her husband's death and overall I think the new horse breed, the Mustang that was changed from the Turkoman, also fits her, now that she's a bounty hunter after all mustangs are known to be wild and hardly tamable, which represents the fact that she's now a lone wolf, who simply does anything she can do to survive. John also comments that Hera looks "mean" which alludes to the fact that Sadie can come off as intimidating.
In the last mission she rides the Bronze Turk, so in the epilogue she doesn't really have a specific horse, as she said it herself: Some people buy ranches, I buy horses.
Honestly, Strauss should have had a specific horse. They mention that he leaves the camp often (since he has to so that he can do his loansharking) so it would make sense for him to have one of his own.

They're a good source to steal Appaloosas, Throughbreds, and Ardennes from My favorite for Arthur besides Buell is the bay turkomen that you can steal from the braithwaithes, similar looking to the bay thoroughbred but better stats

Did you know all the gang members horses actually having horseshoes? They're the only horses in the game that are having those! You can see for yourself using photomode whilst riding along with the gang in missions, and check under the hooves
Honestly just a chance thing. Of course wild horses will never have shoes, but it seems to be a 50/50 chance that stolen horses do have them. I primarily steal horses and Ive had a lot of horses that do, then probably an equal amount that dont.
Actually, Arthur seemingly had a horse that was not shown in RDR2 but is located in the game files that someone ripped off from the PS4 version. It's a redish brown Hungarian Half-bred with special stats where Health - 10, Stamina - 9, Speed - 7, Accel - 6 and the coat is called "Red Liver" whereas the horse's name is Boudecea, the name the Romans give to Boudica. It fits the name as Boudica was a rebel to the Romans who was stuck in the old ways and was rebelling against the "new-age" Romans while also known to have ginger hair which in many other places just simply called as "red head". Same as Arthur's horse which is red, Arthur himself is living in an old system that reprises the new ways of life as he follows Dutch's views and thus he himself is fighting oppression of the new system with ways of the old west. Boudecea fits the name of his horse. However, we don't see the horse. It might be due to last minute balancing issue that giving Arthur such a broken horse straight out of the gameplay would deny players to use other horses as they liked thus they removed it. However if you wanna talk lore wise, we could say that Arthur's horse was lost in Blackwater seemingly due to being shot dead or in a state of panic, Arthur couldn't get his horse in time due to the constant gunfight that chased the gang out of town thus he grabbed whatever horse that was near to him and ran with it till they escaped Colter towards Valentines. However, I believe Boudecea died during the whole Blackwater Massacre thus he had no choice but to use a normal Tennesse Walker.
Very cool video. I remember checking out all of the horses at Horseshoe Overlook on my first playthrough. It frustrated me that I couldn't ride any of them, especially The Count.

Ennis is a place in Ireland and Ennis roughly means 'one choice' from Celtic origins. But Ennis is also the anglicized version from the Irish word inis which means island. Éire is the Irish word for Ireland. So either Sean named his horse after a town or he named it one choice technically.

I feel you’re meaning that Arthur mentioned once the that he tried to ride The Count and he bucked him off as soon as he tried or something. If so then yeah, that is a bit strange. But if not then well ofc you can't ride any of the gang horses besides Baylock once. The Count is such a beauty tho.

I’ve been switching between with the first horse, the Mahogany Bay Tennessee Walker I named Galm, but in the end I chose him for the final mission as Arthur as to put the chapter to an end. It’s really sad that I have to do it knowing we’re tied together by fate, but the rest of the horses haven’t seen what he’s been through.
It’s also worth mentioning that Charles is Native American, and the Appaloosa horse has a long history with native American tribes and was said to be bred to what it is today by natives! Today, a breed of horse called the Nez Perce (named after the nez perce tribe) was created from breeding of Native American Appaloosa’s and gifted akhal-teke horses. This is because in the 19th century, the US government killed the selectively bred Appaloosa’s of the nez perce tribe
I always collect horses but leave the white Arabian in the wild. It's too pretty to tame. On my current playthrough I let Arthur keep his first Horse and named it Nugget, he kept the black Shire from Hosea aswell, Shadowmere. Then I came across a beautiful white Nokota which I named Frost and then I hunted down the red Arabian, Lucifer😆 and then I keep secondary horses, mostly for storage during hunting. They're all named Sheldon...
recently saw a theory that Baylock is actually THE horse you get when reaching low honor in rdr1, which, depending on how old Baylock is in rdr2, is very possible.
Interesting thoughts on the meanings. I've always thought Bill rode a Shire horse and not an Ardennes as it was bigger than Ardennes. However, I've always thought a perfect horse for Arthur was the silver coat Ardennes you were able to get from pre-ordering the game.
Baylock is extremely similar to the Dark Horse from RDR1, a horse only accessible to those with low honor, an excellent indirect spoiler to see who the traitor was from the start.
Well Arthurs character and with that each playthrough is as different as the players are sooo it could be that this is also represented in the choice of horses. Some might chose the horse the game starts with, others might get the splashed white Paint or a chestnut Tennessee Walker.

I appreciate the feedback. The Nokita horse (in real life) are used for such things as fox hunting, dressage, and show jumping. They are trained specifically to understand their riders instructions more than other horses, who are taught only basic commands

Could you look into the various audio cues that play during the game? I have the feeling they are entirely random, but surely that can't be true. What does that haunting violin announce, for instance?
I think theres some conflict here, Kierans Tennessee walker is credited as fast and agile but weak, Arthurs is credited as durable and sturdy. Tennessee walkers are strong and durable but they certainly arent fast

Someone may have already said this but to add to Bill his horse is also a war horse which ties into Bill’s past in the military.

Appaloosa is also a Native American horse breed. Another key part of Charles' character, his pride in his Native heritage. Something I can relate to.
Both Trelawny and Kieran’s horses are welsh names, ‘Gwydion’ is a hero in welsh mythology and ‘Branwen’ meaning blessed and fair 👍
I believe Gwydion also means magician in welsh.

There is one exception though - in one of the last missions, Arthur jumps on The Count while Dutch is riding him. That is during the train heist.
I feel you’re meaning that Arthur mentioned once the that he tried to ride The Count and he bucked him off as soon as he tried or something. If so then yeah, that is a bit strange. But if not then well ofc you can't ride any of the gang horses besides Baylock once. The Count is such a beauty tho.

I’ve been switching between with the first horse, the Mahogany Bay Tennessee Walker I named Galm, but in the end I chose him for the final mission as Arthur as to put the chapter to an end. It’s really sad that I have to do it knowing we’re tied together by fate, but the rest of the horses haven’t seen what he’s been through.
It’s also worth mentioning that Charles is Native American, and the Appaloosa horse has a long history with native American tribes and was said to be bred to what it is today by natives! Today, a breed of horse called the Nez Perce (named after the nez perce tribe) was created from breeding of Native American Appaloosa’s and gifted akhal-teke horses. This is because in the 19th century, the US government killed the selectively bred Appaloosa’s of the nez perce tribe
I believe Ennis (Sean's Horse) is a Silver Tail Buckskin American Standardbred which is available in the epilogue at Tumbleweed stable.
I always collect horses but leave the white Arabian in the wild. It's too pretty to tame. On my current playthrough I let Arthur keep his first Horse and named it Nugget, he kept the black Shire from Hosea aswell, Shadowmere. Then I came across a beautiful white Nokota which I named Frost and then I hunted down the red Arabian, Lucifer😆 and then I keep secondary horses, mostly for storage during hunting. They're all named Sheldon...
recently saw a theory that Baylock is actually THE horse you get when reaching low honor in rdr1, which, depending on how old Baylock is in rdr2, is very possible.

Interesting thoughts on the meanings. I've always thought Bill rode a Shire horse and not an Ardennes as it was bigger than Ardennes. However, I've always thought a perfect horse for Arthur was the silver coat Ardennes you were able to get from pre-ordering the game.
I wish Rockstar would add the long hair you see on Shires to the hair options in the stables😭
Baylock is extremely similar to the Dark Horse from RDR1, a horse only accessible to those with low honor, an excellent indirect spoiler to see who the traitor was from the start.

Well Arthurs character and with that each playthrough is as different as the players are sooo it could be that this is also represented in the choice of horses. Some might chose the horse the game starts with, others might get the splashed white Paint or a chestnut Tennessee Walker.

I appreciate the feedback. The Nokita horse (in real life) are used for such things as fox hunting, dressage, and show jumping. They are trained specifically to understand their riders instructions more than other horses, who are taught only basic commands
I named that Tennessee Walker O'Driscoll, since we killed a O'Driscoll right before we tamed it.

For me I gave Arthur the striped Arabian and called her Boadicea II. In the epilogue i give John buell and believe him to be his horse in rdr1
Fun or sad fact is Uncle had horse in Epilogue named Nell IV that means Nell II and III died or he lost them

I think theres some conflict here, Kierans Tennessee walker is credited as fast and agile but weak, Arthurs is credited as durable and sturdy. Tennessee walkers are strong and durable but they certainly arent fast
