    Daniel is San icon. He's won every award shy of a Nobel peace Prize. Nobody can say whose best.. But if they don't mention Daniel then they cannot hear well. I could spend hours talking about Daniel.. He's a musical genius.
    Top of all fiddler's all time. Top meaning he's great! There are others but he stands out. He loves Terry and Mark and many more. But he mainly just loves the music!

    Very nice. I played this as a young fiddler. Not nearly as well. I started playing violin when I was 5 years old. Now I am 65 and still feel like I am 5 years old.

    This was one of the great tunes a much younger Mark O'Conner used to play that made him a fiddle champ at Weiser, Idaho back in the day for so many years they would not let him compete any more.

    • @joyoffiddling
      @joyoffiddling  Рік тому

      @Robert Shorthill, for the record, the rule in Weiser is, you can win a division three times in a row before you are expected to take a year off or better yet be a judge, to give others a chance at the title. If Mark wanted to, he could compete in Weiser, but I imagine he's got bigger fish to fry.

    • @joyoffiddling
      @joyoffiddling  4 роки тому +4

      Well observed, James. The importance of solid back up can never be underestimated. Not only for how the back up sounds to the listener but how the back up makes the fiddler feel. A fiddler playing with pickers they can trust is able to do things on their instrument they would not otherwise be able to do. A fiddler riding a wave of groovy rhythm is not unlike a surfer riding a literal wave on the ocean. I've done both and the feeling is very similar....it's thrilling and addicting. And it sucks when the waves are chop, slop, weak, or flat. Mom always said when given the choice between bad back up and no back up at all, it was preferable to go with the latter. (She called it "Playing naked".) And for the record I think it's worth saying that "the best" back up does not necessarily mean you must only have the most skilled, most accomplished, most talented pickers on the planet to play with. The best is what is best for an individual fiddler according to their taste and needs as a musician. What pickers accentuate their joy in playing? Because, if you're feeling good, odds are you're sounding good. I am fortunate to have many pickers that I am able to play with regularly, but one in particular who is very self deprecating about his chops on the guitar: "I know I'm not the best picker around...but I listen. I pay attention." Fancy chord progressions can be a nice touch, but bottom line, it's all about the groove.

    What this needs is more guitars😛

    • @joyoffiddling
      @joyoffiddling  6 років тому

      Well, Mick, you are not the first to make comment about that and it is totally understandable that some may wonder, how many is too many? For the record there are three standard six string guitars and one four string tenor guitar. And as far as this style of fiddling is concerned, it is not at all uncommon to have multiple pickers backing up a single fiddler. And truth be told I've seen many more pickers on stage or at a jam session with a fiddler than we have here. I can tell you on this evening Daniel thoroughly enjoyed having his own wall of rhythm. Whereas, if you check out the Calvin Vollrath videos on this channel, you will see one fiddler and one picker, and it's magic. Ultimately, to each his or her own. As far as we were concerned on this evening we were not recording an album or performing for an audience. We're just good friends who love making music together.

      No apology necessary,+ Mike. And +The Four Horsemen, let's not assume Joy of Fiddling doesn't have a sense of humor 😉, as we had a good laugh when we first saw Mike's comment (plus we saw his joking emoticon). But as stated in the first sentence of our reply to Mike, other folks had wondered about the number of back up instruments around one fiddle in the Atherton Session series of videos on the Joy of Fiddling channel and we thought it was worth sharing a little information about the tradition of this particular style of fiddling and accompaniment.
      And +Mike Hursey, you and your English accordion are welcome at are American jams anytime.👍

    is there sheet music for this version? I would love to learn it !!! AMAZING JOB

    • @joyoffiddling
      @joyoffiddling  7 років тому +4

      Glad you found and enjoyed this video, talkaholic. As I am sure you already know, sheet music for the tune "Tom and Jerry" is readily available. But as far as a direct transcription of this specific version in this video, I'm afraid one does not exist, unless someone has watched this video a few hundred times and transcribed it themselves. I shared your question with Daniel (already knowing full well what his answer was going to be) and his brief reply was this particular version was "on the fly". I can assure you that in the hundreds, if not thousands of times Daniel has played this tune, he has never done it exactly the same way twice, which is the case with pretty much every fiddle tune he plays. What you are seeing and hearing in this video (and in any of the other 20 videos of Daniel on this channel) sometimes referred to as "controlled improvisation", comes out of is head, heart, and soul in the moment. He had never played it like that before and he will never play it exactly like that again. Could not, even if he wanted to. But don't let that discourage you. On the contrary, while fiddlers have been borrowing tunes, variations, versions, and licks from other fiddlers since fiddling came into existence, there is something to be said about the joy of discovering your own way of playing a tune that is unique to you. It's fun and a good learning exercise to incorporate a few favorite licks from our fiddle heroes, but I believe you will find there is a great deal of satisfaction when variations and licks of your own reveal themselves to you.

    • @talkaholic1
      @talkaholic1 7 років тому +1

      Joy of Fiddling, thank you for replying. That is incredible. I've been playing the violin for over 12 years now but I am very 'by the book' And have learned suzuki method and love playing Bach's partitas and sonatas. I am excited to try this style of playing and will be seeking inspiration from Daniel

    • @joyoffiddling
      @joyoffiddling  7 років тому +1

      My pleasure. Daniel is an exceptionally inspiring individual and not just for his fiddling. Remember you are not alone, as there have been countless classically trained violinists who at some point discovered and fell hard for fiddling. (my mom was one of them) There are many challenges, of course, when tackling a new style and technique on an instrument that you've devoted many years to playing a very specific way. But the rewards for those with intent and discipline and desire to explore a new world are profound and lifelong.

      @@joyoffiddling If I am not mistaken, this is in a "Texas style" of fiddling, full of improvs and variations where it is never done the same way more than once. If you had 2 or three fiddlers playing this, or many other tunes, you would probably get several variations -- each interesting, no doubt.

    • @joyoffiddling
      @joyoffiddling  Рік тому +1

      Exactly,@@robertshorthill6836. However, "Texas Style" is a tricky label to put on fiddlers sometimes, as the definition can change from person to person. I'd sooner jump off a cliff than try to pass myself off as an authority on ANY style of fiddling. Having said that, I do believe that improvisation and musical variation are a big part of Texas style fiddling and Daniel is one of the greatest improvisors on the fiddle that I know.

      Oh, I know Atherton. One of the wealthiest, old money cities in the USA. Certainly not Deer Holler, West Virginia. Not being a rude person, maybe bit of a wise guy, but to her such wonderful music coming out of Atherton is quite a surprise. • @joyoffiddling
      @joyoffiddling  6 років тому +2

      Well B.T., I'd like to believe that good music is good music and can come from anywhere. Out of all the musicians who appear in the Atherton Session videos, only one of them actually lives in Atherton and he's originally from Nacogdoches,Texas, and he most certainly does not come from "old money". The other folks in the videos currently reside in the states of Oregon, California, and Kentucky. Daniel (fiddle) is originally from Alabama and his wife Amy (piano) is originally from Idaho. Scott (guitar) lived for many years in Nashville, Tennessee and toured the country playing with Country Music legend Tom T Hall. Stephen (tenor guitar) is originally from Indiana. Basically, everyone in this video is from everywhere. We're all friends who just decided to get together that particular weekend to play music and Atherton happened to be the gathering point.
      As for the instrument, Daniel plays three different fiddles in this series of videos (one of them mine) but I cannot speak on the maker of the fiddle in this particular video, beyond the fact that it's not a Stradivarius, although that would be pretty cool, wouldn't it?
