Hey everyone, welcome to a new addition of Strange Gaming Stories! Today is a true story about how an obscure game my friend Jeff had growing up changed his entire outlook on gaming. Have you ever heard of Top Banana or have any experience with it? Let me know in the comments below!
Jeff probably had Photosensitive Epilepsy. My epilepsy isn't Photosensitive, but I did start having seizures suddenly when I was a teenager, with no sign before that that I had the disability. That could have happened to Jeff.
Bruh, I have Tourette's Syndrome, which a lot of people THINK is related to epilepsy on first glance, but it isn't at all. It's way closer to OCD. Still, even though I don't have ANY sort of epilepsy, that opening was FREAKY AS FUCK, and i had to look away BECAUSE it was so freaky.
This feels like a real life creepypasta. It's so sad that this game tore him from the friend group, and practically erased from everyone's memories. I hope he is living his best life, and found a way to enjoy video games again
@@livinglie5598 well lets be positive: at least the bots which say:"COME here and sleep with me(im not gonna say the alt cuz youtube will prob delete me comment) or sumthing like that" are deleted at LEAST most of them
I honestly would have been completely horrified by Top Banana. I was a really timid kid deep down so if I saw that flashing monstrosity I might have started crying. It's really jarring. That opening is really creepy.
Maybe Jeff got a feeling after 1.5 hours of being left out of the fun in his own home, that his friends weren’t really his friends and just wanted to use his stuff. He probably thought you, just would play it a little and then end it, so that you could all play together, but you didn’t.
I honestly didn’t want to say it because it sounds insanely confrontational and like most kids aren’t super sensitive to others emotions so I’m sure it wasn’t intentional but it’s really the unavoidable background vibes I get from this whole story even when narrating the story as an adult the only thing notable about Jeff was the cool stuff he had that others wanted to play with I’ve never been super rich but I’ve been situations as an adult where you’re the only guy in your friend group with a job and everyone just constantly wanting stuff. How Even now I don’t feel comfortable talking about how that made me feel because as much as feeling used sucks I’m sure being in a situation where you have to ask sucks even more, complaining about it almost feels like you’re being a selfish asshole complaining about minor issues compared to what everyone else puts up with, but with that said I can tell you that being in Jeff’s shoes isn’t fun constantly feeling worthless constantly feeling like the only value you hold to others is the things you can get them constantly feeling like you’re just some idiot getting played
I feel this. Neighborhood kids never wanted to play with me until my parents got a swingset installed in our backyard. I'm 30 now, but it still hurts looking back.
That happened to me when i gotten the wii console, thought people will be friends with me in elementary but instead they come over to play it with me, left me, but yet still bullies me at school.
I imagine Jeff was probably still traumatized from the seizure experience. So, having his friends play the very same game in the next room may have been insensitive to his situation? Though, of course everyone was just curious kids. The overall experience could have ruined his love of video games in general.
"Top banana" is an old comedy term for the headliner who gets all the good punch lines. Nowadays it just means the most important person in an organization or group. No idea what it has to do with this game, though.
Watching the video I didn’t believe this was a real game at first, it just looks so rough and unfinished. Looks like some questionable choices were made in development.
Epileptic seizures are common enough that most game instruction books carried warnings about them. There was a news story when I was a kid about a guy that had rented the PS version of Red Alert and had a seizure. It has nothing to do with "trippy" visuals, just particular light patterns.
Oh, Christ. Top Banana. The amount of times I've seen whoisthisgit rant and rave about its lower-than-dumpster-tier quality is frankly absurd. You have received all my condolences.
I only have two real memories of a game turning my blood cold, but neither caused me any physical damage, and one wasn't even a game, per se. The first time was when I was maybe 6, I had somehow managed to get to the final stage in Megaman X4. Upon doing so, you're treated to a cutscene where the once rotund and friendly-looking Double transforms, his round body opening up like a Bakugan to reveal his true form, in all it's spiky glory. Looking back at it, he looked edgy as hell, and him starting to slaughter reploids, making them spew reddish oil is comical, but that was the first time I had ever been faced with the concept of mass violence, and I think I screamed, because my mother who was asleep on the bed (the Playstation was in her room) asked what was wrong. I explained it to her, and she just asked, "Do I have to not let you play that game anymore?" I and remember replying something like, no, I'm okay now. Still, that scene haunted me for a long time, and with the massive difficulty spike that boss brought, I was more than okay with never finishing the game anyway. The other was the PS2 Red Screen of Death. 'Nuff said.
As soon as I saw the thumbnail, I knew it was going to be Top Banana. I knew of this game’s existence from a whoisthisgit video. (Leave My Eyes Alone!)
Sounds more like Jeff was angry that it didn’t affect you guys but it did him, how you were able to play the game and joke about it, meanwhile he had to stay out of the room, angry at himself and life that he couldn’t play certain games with his friends or simply his friends didn’t seem to care and kept playing and having fun without him. I’d imagine that would piss off any kid.
Honestly he was probably just pissed and felt betrayed that you clearly just wanted to use him for his games rather than genuinely be his friend. He probably only realized it when you completely shut him out of his own living room and gaming systems to play a game which had traumatized him despite his and his family’s warnings.
@Deso Lark Not wrong, you aren't friends with someone unless they offer you something. Either social or financial benefits. Most people use their friends like therapists, it's pathetic.
@@EmergencyChannel People become friends because they share mutual interests, and because they enjoy each other's company. Benefiting from a friendship and "using" your friends are two very different things. I get the impression that you have formed your views on friendship based on relationships in your own life, which, while understandable, is not an accurate representation of the world at large. You clearly have a very biased view of the "average" friendship, and I suspect that you probably have never been to see an actual therapist before (although based on what you've said, you probably should consider doing so).
He also could've been worried about having another seizure, just hearing or thinking about the visuals in the game? Makes sense. Also, you'd think a game as progressive as wanting to 'protect the environment' would do a littttttle better to protect user's health with flashing lights warnings and such... and with a game like this, a PROMINENT warning for such :L
I'd assume so - poor little thing was only a kid. Seizures suck. Maybe his friends got to the last point he could remember before the seizure and hospital.
Fantastic video and to answer your question at the end, yes. There is a game. Now, the game that really freaked me out as a kid was a horror game; now I know what you are thinking "they are meant to freak you out!" But this was different. It was a DOS game called Dark Seed. Now Dark Seed is by Cyberdreams who made the game I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream (which luckily I didn't play when I was younger because that probably would have scarred me also.) DS is a point and click adventure that freaked me out for all the wrong reasons. The game is painfully esoteric and obtuse. I am sure there are worst examples (like Armed and Delirious) of a point and click game that is harder than DS but nothing really comes to mind. The game is based around a 3 day cycle (3 real time hours) and certain things must be done in a particular order or the game is unwinnable. I remember playing the game, enjoying the spooky visuals, but being made to feel incredibly anxious and unnerved by the game design itself. I'd never played a game that was so punishing. Yes, there are hard games like Contra etc but those show you the danger. Those show you what you did wrong. Dark Seed didnt do this at all. Dark Seed reveled in your powerlessness. Of course we can just get a guide online nowadays but I was a kid and this was the 90's. Getting online wasn't that easy and search engines were primitive. The whole game gives off this absolutely horrible and unnatural vibe which has stuck with me to this day. The games graphics are most rusty browns and silver. Even though I haven't played it in years I can still vividly see the parts of the game that, lets be honest, haunt my soul. The parts where the aliens kill you dont stick in my mind all that much. But the parts that I do remember are talking to the strange neighbour and his dog and getting a horrid sense of paranoia. I remember going to a funeral home in the game and messing around looking for ashes or something like that. With absolutely no clue what to do with them. I remember picking up a policemans gun and having this horrible feeling of unease. I remember being in an attic completely lost with no idea what I was actually meant to be accomplishing. Id played and loved games like Gabriel Knight which have violent horror elements but in those games you are clearly the hero. There are goals, theres a story. Dark Seed felt more like playing a fever dream. Or as many of the reviewers at the time called it; a nightmare. Dark Seed felt insidious. But more over it felt like being in a haze. Imagine going through your day, completing tasks and chores with no contextual knowledge of why you were doing so. It's pure dissociation. Thats Dark Seed. (Sorry about the rant. I bet the game feels nothing like that now. I do remember Pushing Up Roses doing a pretty good review of it, but I remember again feeling odd, because she obviously didn't get haunted by it like I did as a kid.)
As someone who has played I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream multiple times I have to say that if you are still into that weird old super convoluted DOS game thing you should check it out! As far as I remember it’s way less creepy than Dark Seed and is honestly pretty goofy at times. I love the way you described Dark Seed, seriously evocative!
You know the artwork in Dark Seed is by renowned Swiss surrealist artist / industrial designer HR Giger - who is amazing, but most well known for creating the Xenomorph in Alien (1979) - the movie with Sigourney Weaver. Directed by Ridley Scott etc. He got the devs to up their resolution but lower the color palette because he hates right angles.
@@AnalogFunktion Of course! I'm a huge fan of Giger. As a kid however, I didn't understand his mix of sex and death, so it all blended into a nightmare haha
Well that story is pretty morbid, but when a game can do such a traumatizing thing to you, it can actually change your outlook on life pretty quick. For example, I refuse to play any type of VR game. My eyes are incredibly super sensitive to light and I have a slight astigmatism, so I really don't want to do anything to aggravate it so I avoid any type of vr headset games because I'm afraid of the potential issues it may cause.
Take this from a guy who adores bubble bobble to death I’m pretty damn sure that from what I can gather from this footage the game rips many ideas from from the way the MC attacks to the collecting of hearts similar to the letter collecting in that series It’s possible the developers’ intent weren’t as pure and artistic as they went on the record
interesting, this is like the first vaporwave/plunderphonics game to exist, if the graphics were clearer and set up a little better this would actually be my kinda thing
I actually love games that look like visual garbage, Top Bannana is right up there with them. From LSD simulator to Sluggish Morse, games like these just have such a unique and strange feel. Of course, most of them are not actually 'fun' but the style they go with is always so unique.
I had a similar story, but instead of preventing me from playing games in general, it only affected the Gears of War series. It was back then in the 360 era. I was a huge fan of the two fist entries and ofc, I immediately started playing 3 when it was released. However, one day I was playing it and then I started not feeling well. I was seeing many TVs and I was losing consciousness. Last thing I remember is a phone call that I couldn't understand what the person on the line was saying. After that, I lost consciousness one hour and a half... A few days later, after I was hospitalized and took some meds. I tried to resume playing, but I couldn't; I always got that sick feeling each time I start the game. This was a few years ago and I haven't tried any game in the series recently.
So... I have a theory. In my experience, being the kid with stuff other kids want... it's interesting. My family had horses growing up. I think it goes without saying, a lot of girls REALLY wanted to come over and play at my house... and when they got there, they were much more interested in the horses. It's understandable, and at first I was fine with it. Horses are pretty cool... However, there would be times when it was cold, rainy / muddy, or just plain yucky outside... and most of my visitors would rather stay out there petting or fawning over the horses, while I got bored of just standing around and went inside. =/ The feeling of loneliness is really palpable when people visit your home, then ignore you to focus on your things. =( Don't get me wrong. It helped me figure out who my real friends were! The ones who wanted to play games with me, hang out at the library, have sleepovers... Sure, we hung out with the horses too, but there were a lot of times when we didn't. I knew they liked me for me, not just the animals. I think... maybe your friend had an awakening of sorts. After playing a video game that gave him seizures, and being told to not play it anymore, he figured you guys (as his friends) wouldn't want to put his health at risk and you all could play one of his many other games. So when all of you wanted to play the one game he couldn't play, and went on playing it for a long time (in his eyes)... it might have felt like a betrayal of sorts. You guys were off having fun, in his home, playing with his stuff... and he couldn't play with you. He might have thought you weren't really his friends after all - that you liked him for his games, and not him. So when he came in and told you to leave... I don't think it was an adverse effect from the game. I think he "figured out" you weren't really his friends... to the point where you would rather play a game that could hurt him instead of actually playing with him. Let me clarify - I absolutely DO NOT think you or your friends were bad people. There's nothing wrong with liking cool stuff and wanting to play with your friends' cool stuff! Again, I know those feelings, and as an adult I can see that kids just get blindsided by this kind of thing. They may not understand the difference between liking a person and liking their things - and that the two can exist together or separately. I don't know what your friendship was like, and I don't want to make any judgements. However... from my own experience, being the kid with stuff other kids wanted... that's my theory as to what happened. It would also explain why things were never the same between you all after that day. Coming to that kind of revelation could not have been easy, especially after you all had been friends for a while. Anyway... Thanks for sharing your story. =) I've never heard of this game. I really like your channel, and I can't wait to see more!
Very interesting and entertaining video! I’ve never heard of this game before and I’m definitely wary of it now. Haha! The only out of body/concerning experience I ever experienced while gaming was back when I was in college. I was in my dorm room and had been playing rock band on my Xbox 360 for over an hour or two straight, rarely taking any breaks to look away from the screen or move around, save for standing there while holding the guitar. I can still remember that at some point during the end of one of the last songs I played on it for the night, I noticed that I wasn’t hitting any of the corresponding notes which was odd because I could feel my fingers hitting the correct buttons and I swore my timing was as right as ever (I had gotten pretty proficient with the game at that point). All of a sudden I began to feel extremely light headed and the track on the screen began to blur together - I looked down to realize my guitar controller had fallen off the strap and was on the floor but I hadn’t even noticed. It truly scared me. I remember immediately shutting off the tv and my console and swearing I wouldn’t ever allow myself to play that long without taking a few quality breaks in between. I’ve never experienced anything like that ever since, but it’s still a haunting memory for sure.
An hour or two? Back when Super Mario Bros. 3 was new, I played for almost 10 hours straight. Glued to the screen most of the time also but no adverse effects from the experience. I guess it just depends on the individual. Before someone mentions the age difference, I also repeated this scenario with JRPGs many years later, with no side effects.
Sounds to me like your knees must've been locked at some point during this excursion. Locking your knees cuts off circulation and can cause fainting. Be very careful not to do that when standing for prolonged durations
Honestly, I'm not surprised poor Jeff suffered a seizure. That game's intense in all the wrong ways. Edit: I went to look at some gameplay footage of the game...The audio's just as cursed as the visuals.
i first heard of top banana a few years ago from a whosithisgit video on bad graphics/poorly made visuals (series called "Leave My Eyes Alone!") and its hard to believe its real, even now. everything about it seems fake. the graphics ae so odd and garbled, the sound design off-putting, the actual mechanics so hard to figure out. its on my mind a good amount, since its such a difficult game to get a feel for, what they were going for and how they possibly released it in the nightmarish state it remains. it genuinely feels like a game youd play in a dream, where only fuzzy bits and pieces are left of your quickly-fading memory. i feel like i could go on for eons about this game, but words escape me on how to truly convey my thoughts.
Man, don't you love it when you are born seemingly all nice and dandy, then you play That one game, and now you're in the hospital? This message was brought to you by: some epileptic dude
As a catholic, I actually do love liminal space stuff, weird/strange music and some horror games, but I’ve noticed a few key actually legitimately concerning things in this game, so uh yeah it is something to be concerned about.
When I was younger, I don't recall games giving me photosensitivity issues. I was able to play the 16-bit Sonic games, Earthbound, and several others without issues. I was even able to play LSD Dream Emulator without having many issues. Although the only game that really gave me any issues was Sonic the Fighters, due to the fast red and yellow strobing KO text. I don't remember having a seizure as most people would describe it (or at least one to the point of a blackout). I had a sharp shooting pain (like sudden pins and needles) that felt like someone punched me in the head, and my speech was slurred for a few minutes. I'm unsure if it was down to an anxiety attack, as I don't like games with that kind of stuff, and it was like the equivalent of a jumpscare, but I went to get an EEG and an MRI scan, and I passed the EEG (Which is supposed to trigger a seizure) with flying colors. I suppose there's plenty of cases where if these kinds of effects can phase a regular person, then they're probably extremely unsafe for someone with photosensitivity issues. Although there's some examples of retro games where I absolutely want to have the anti-flicker shader enabled in Retroarch alongside a reduced saturation and contrast. Madou Monogatari (The PC Engine CD version, which has rapidly flashing menu selections), Castlevania: Rondo of Blood and Symphony of the Night, and Sakura Wars (Although this is bearable outside of the SP meter being maxed out which absolutely needs an anti-flicker shader to be playable) come to mind. It's honestly really disappointing how much photosensitivity options in rereleases of older games and even simple options like disabling muzzle flashes from weapons that fire quickly or hologram flashing (like in some of Platinum's games) are completely overlooked, especially from legacy gaming news outlets that love to preach about accessibility options. They only covered Cyberpunk 2077 when it gave a reviewer issues. I'm glad that Gal*Gun Returns patched out the rapidly flashing Red and Yellow shouting text in a game patch despite the port's other issues.
I have an idea for a game that would use trippy visuals and flashing lights to create a sense of discomfort and uneasiness. After seeing this if I ever make a game like that I'll put "EXTREME EPILEPSY WARNING" in the beginning of the description. Thank you.
as far as i can remember i can't think of any game that might have triggered me like "Jeff". I may have been disturbed by some games like Resident Evil 2 original or Silent Hill original. But to be completely turned off by the game to such a degree i've never heard of with people. Maybe your friend Jeff reached a level that his mind interpreted the images into something scary or incomprehensible when he had his seizure and never wanted to experience it again.
I had to look away and close the one eye that could see the second monitor just cause the jarring colours, I do it though. That game, just hearing the story, it makes sense in a way.. The trauma from having that happen, it feels like it can't be real, yet just googling the game name, it shows up. I really hope your old friend is doing better.
I had a mild PNES type event playing No Straight Roads (I remember it only because I distinctly remember feeling nauseous like my typical seizures then blacking out for a good two minutes before I did anything drastic or anxiety inducing for my family) but I was home alone and coming out of it I only remember getting a headache then blacking out and getting nauseous from some sort of snow effect. It was weird because I've never had a seizure before or after playing video games, my typical seizures are actually triggered by frontal lobe malfunction.
Thanks for the warning, I still watched and now I have a light migraine. So I can imagine Jeff having a seizure from playing this for hours. This is truly horrible, I play games console and game. And occasionally get migraines from playing. Then after i played again and get another migraine I just ditch the game.
Damn, I remember how long ago I played this crap on the Commodore Amiga 64 emulator. I remember that this game was on my flash drive... But I can’t find it now
"cursed my friend" or he was just pissed at his group of "friends" that went to his house just play on his console and not include him by playing the game that caused his seizure
Top Banana was my first taste in horror games, it scared me enough that my parents had to take me to therapy for a whole year just to sooth the memory of the scene. I will never forget the scene
@@UwU-nv8qu I mean it...i was a child that time so the impact was pretty hard and it was my first trauma, i recovered now after playing a unhealthy amount of horror games
Sounds like Jeff ended up being fine, other than having to find out that his friends cared more about his stuff than about being around him. Many, many games can trigger photosensitive epilepsy. This one just happens to also be ugly and obscure.
I feel sorry for Jeff, but honestly, I'd love to play this game. The trippy footage just makes me awestruck. Intentional or not, it's a hell of an artsy game and it being a hidden gem only fortifies my will to try it out and maybe even finish it.
Seizures can happen at any time for some people (including myself), but it would screw me up if it happened like that. Though most of the time you forget a ton of what you did that day.
So you used your friend even after a serious medical emergency, and insisted on playing the game that sent him to the hospital? No wonder he got mad. I hope this is a fake story.
I looked up this game and it's a wild one, to say the least. Your friend likely picked up one of the earliest known forms of those troll-like games, kinda like how people make weird bootleg/graphic NSFW rom hacks (i.e. the one with Felix the cat ripping his face off) back then. While some are saying it's epilepsy (that is possible) or how you and your friends treated him (...I don't think that's the case), I think the game simply triggered a sense in fear from him. To be that young and get introduced to whatever weird psychedelic horror that thing was supposed to be, it probably scared him just enough to keep the game away from anyone's hands. I used to be horrified as a kid of some genuinely creepy Twilight Zone bumpers during their marathons on WBTV 20 back then growing up, because they'd pause frame on stills for a solid 5-7 seconds of some of the show's scariest moments as a kid, and that stuff used to freak me the f*ck out as a child, lol. All I can say is I genuinely don't know why people would make games like that other than being a general d*ck of they had to have been tripping on acid during the making of that stuff, it's fascinating but deep down those are the games I avoid. Not because I don't like them, I love me some oddity games, but games that are just... I dunno, trippy/troll-y for sake of trippy/troll-y turn me off in gaming. Your friend was unfortunately introduced to a weird game and sadly it tore you guys apart. :(
hearing this, it doesn't sound the game is what made him stop being your friend. Put yourself in his shoes, these people, who are your friends, like to come over to your house and play games with you. Then one day you get a seizure that was bad enough you had to go to the hospital, which must have been really scary, then shortly after your friends visit and immediately ask if they can play the game that just hospitalized you. You have to be in another room alone while the people you thought were your friends play the game and have fun without you. I'm pretty sure he kicked your asses out because it became abundantly clear that his "friends" didn't even care that he had a seizure and are just there to use his shit. The only thing you told us about Jeff really was his possessions so it's clear that's how you viewed him. I'm glad Jeff stopped hanging out with you guys, you guys sounded like horrible fucking friends, jesus. The fact you didn't even consider that and pinned it on him being disturbed shows a lot too.
It's not a creepypasta. If you just search yt for Top Banana you can watch playthroughs of the whole thing. It's a real game, and photosensitive seizures from games are relatively common.
Super Mario 64 scared me as a kid No, I'm serious. The game felt so mysterious to me as a kid, like there was always something I didn't know The also intrigued me, of course, as I wanted to uncover this worlds dark secrets As I learned more and more through my various playthroughs it only got creepier. I noticed the skybox of wet dry world, deduced that the special wing cap stage couldn't take place above the castle because of it's four towers, studied that fountain for days trying to figure out what it's deal was. Why did the world feel so empty? What happened to wet dry world? What was on top of the castle? Why is this game so off? Eventually I lost the game and couldn't find it, thus my investigation was permanently halted. Of course, I now know far more about the game and it's world and it doesn't really creep me out too much any more. But some places in the game still give me that nostalgic feeling that something very wrong is going on here. Note: I could never get on top of the castle because I was bad at the game
I know what you mean. Never owned a copy myself, but my cousins had the DS remake and a virtual Wii download. The DS version was always fine. We had download play and would joke and compete, we had fun. I could even have fun watching one play the N64 version. But when I tried to play it, when no one was around, taking a break, it was just so... Quiet. Like, desolated. It was lonely and a bit intimidating. Granted, I was like 5-7, so that was a big part of it. Even now, seeing gameplay of the N64 version, I think about how quiet and "you're on your own." it feels.
@@PressStartToContinueYT my friend was and me were playing a anime fighting forgot was it called but anyway we’re playing and there was think like big blast in the game and that what made my friend go like that and after that drama we just went back to normal
TBH.....this game looks REALLY COOOL and fun to me!!!!!! Maybe its because im a completely insane burn out, but I so wanna try this. It looks visually stunning and reminds me of Rainbow Islands, which I love!
Oh my god. That’s just… horrible. I am DEATHLY afraid of software gore, and I’m honestly kind of glad I wasn’t born yet. This game scares the life out of me, even the normal gameplay. There’s just so much going on and it’s just so low quality.
I'd be pissed if I were him too, he was just sent to the hospital because of the game and you're still rude enough to just sit there in his house playing a game he's not even allowed to look at or risk dying.
Man the graphics on the game looks awful. I'm so sorry that happened to your friend. Whoever made the game do that should get sued. I never heard of the game before until now. Poor kid. If I was him I'd either burn the game or throw it away also why does UA-cam think the game is earthbound?
These graphics don't look like they were made by a human. In fact, it looks like they threw a bunch of images into a corrupter and used them as graphics for the game. Straight-ass bad game design.
It looks like a broken rom hack vinesauce would play but someone genuinely looked at it and said “yeah. This is a good idea. This is art” I’m guessing after that games had to start using the epilepsy warning, but that makes me wonder about the lightning effect in Mario kart. Did that effect him? Or maybe it was quite literally sensory overload from “drug trip: the game”
This game looks like someone puked on it And then poured multiple different types of paint on it Also sorry to hear about your friend hopefully he's ok

How Even now I don’t feel comfortable talking about how that made me feel because as much as feeling used sucks I’m sure being in a situation where you have to ask sucks even more, complaining about it almost feels like you’re being a selfish asshole complaining about minor issues compared to what everyone else puts up with, but with that said I can tell you that being in Jeff’s shoes isn’t fun constantly feeling worthless constantly feeling like the only value you hold to others is the things you can get them constantly feeling like you’re just some idiot getting played
been there, it sucks. (kids are jerks)
@Deso Lark who cares

Cause the game is a joke
Watching the video I didn’t believe this was a real game at first, it just looks so rough and unfinished.
Looks like some questionable choices were made in development.
The developers were high on magic mushrooms.
Agreed
@@borderlinesunshine9630 dude, I think that s**t ain't magical
That stuff straight up poison mushrooms they were doing.
'Nuff said.
dont forget how zero had red oil in his hands in his intro
As soon as I saw the thumbnail, I knew it was going to be Top Banana. I knew of this game’s existence from a whoisthisgit video. (Leave My Eyes Alone!)
most powerful characters in gaming lmao top banana edition
Sounds more like Jeff was angry that it didn’t affect you guys but it did him, how you were able to play the game and joke about it, meanwhile he had to stay out of the room, angry at himself and life that he couldn’t play certain games with his friends or simply his friends didn’t seem to care and kept playing and having fun without him.
I’d imagine that would piss off any kid.
I had to check out a let's play after seeing this. The sound design is unsettling and broke my man Jeff
um yes it certainly is
Honestly he was probably just pissed and felt betrayed that you clearly just wanted to use him for his games rather than genuinely be his friend. He probably only realized it when you completely shut him out of his own living room and gaming systems to play a game which had traumatized him despite his and his family’s warnings.
All friendships are based off using each other.
@@EmergencyChannel damn your girlfriend leave you or something? Makes sense for your name.
@@EmergencyChannel NIGGA WHAT
@Deso Lark Not wrong, you aren't friends with someone unless they offer you something.
I swear, for a still frame at 1:48, I could see Gex. I was actually worried Gex was cursed for a second.
I haven’t seen curses like these since I played Top Banana at James Earl Jones’s house!
OH SHIT
I actually paused on it and it says HEX, close enough though
He also could've been worried about having another seizure, just hearing or thinking about the visuals in the game? Makes sense.
Also, you'd think a game as progressive as wanting to 'protect the environment' would do a littttttle better to protect user's health with flashing lights warnings and such... and with a game like this, a PROMINENT warning for such :L
Yeah I thought that was a bit weird given its subject matter. I agree with your first statement, in retrospect it probably haunted him quite a bit.
I'd assume so - poor little thing was only a kid. Seizures suck. Maybe his friends got to the last point he could remember before the seizure and hospital.
I thought it was a scare tactic like it was saying "save the planet or we'll give your kids seizures"
Fantastic video and to answer your question at the end, yes. There is a game.
Now, the game that really freaked me out as a kid was a horror game; now I know what you are thinking "they are meant to freak you out!" But this was different.
It was a DOS game called Dark Seed.
Now Dark Seed is by Cyberdreams who made the game I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream (which luckily I didn't play when I was younger because that probably would have scarred me also.)
DS is a point and click adventure that freaked me out for all the wrong reasons.
Wow, that's crazy! I'll have to look the game up now :)
Doesn't help that there's a sequel to the game that has a downer of an ending, lol
Every time I put on a VR headset I hear my grandmother’s ghost say, “don’t stand so close to the tv”!
Take this from a guy who adores bubble bobble to death I’m pretty damn sure that from what I can gather from this footage the game rips many ideas from from the way the MC attacks to the collecting of hearts similar to the letter collecting in that series
It’s possible the developers’ intent weren’t as pure and artistic as they went on the record
interesting, this is like the first vaporwave/plunderphonics game to exist, if the graphics were clearer and set up a little better this would actually be my kinda thing
I heard of this game from one of whoisdisguy's videos. I just couldn't believe what I was seeing. Reminded me of those video game creepypastas.
The feeling of loneliness is really palpable when people visit your home, then ignore you to focus on your things. =(
Don't get me wrong.
I’ve never experienced anything like that ever since, but it’s still a haunting memory for sure.
whoa, that's crazy! Glad you were ok!
An hour or two? Back when Super Mario Bros. 3 was new, I played for almost 10 hours straight. Glued to the screen most of the time also but no adverse effects from the experience. I guess it just depends on the individual. Before someone mentions the age difference, I also repeated this scenario with JRPGs many years later, with no side effects.
an hour or two. lol
i played cruelty squad for 6 hours straight with no breaks and nothing happened to me, i think im immune to everything
Sounds to me like your knees must've been locked at some point during this excursion. Locking your knees cuts off circulation and can cause fainting. Be very careful not to do that when standing for prolonged durations

i first heard of top banana a few years ago from a whosithisgit video on bad graphics/poorly made visuals (series called "Leave My Eyes Alone!") and its hard to believe its real, even now. everything about it seems fake. the graphics ae so odd and garbled, the sound design off-putting, the actual mechanics so hard to figure out. its on my mind a good amount, since its such a difficult game to get a feel for, what they were going for and how they possibly released it in the nightmarish state it remains. it genuinely feels like a game youd play in a dream, where only fuzzy bits and pieces are left of your quickly-fading memory.
i feel like i could go on for eons about this game, but words escape me on how to truly convey my thoughts.
Man, don't you love it when you are born seemingly all nice and dandy, then you play That one game, and now you're in the hospital?

As soon as I saw the "LOVE ❤", I IMMEDIATELY knew what game was going to be discussed here.
ah, I just love this *EARTHBOUND* gameplay
Of course it's Top Banana... I'm pretty sure this game was made by Satan himself
As a catholic, I actually do love liminal space stuff, weird/strange music and some horror games, but I’ve noticed a few key actually legitimately concerning things in this game, so uh yeah it is something to be concerned about.
Outside of Europe, what kid would seriously want an Amiga?
Thank you.
that'll be very important!
"my friend just had a siezure"

as far as i can remember i can't think of any game that might have triggered me like "Jeff".

So you used your friend even after a serious medical emergency, and insisted on playing the game that sent him to the hospital? No wonder he got mad. I hope this is a fake story.
Jeff was just jealous he couldn’t handle the Top Banana style 😎
Thanks for the comment
Probably one of those games that I'll never touch, but the graphics for it are pretty nauseating for sure.
Never heard od it, but ir just seems so creepy and scary. If I were a kid playing this game, I would have nightmares FOREVER.
hearing this, it doesn't sound the game is what made him stop being your friend.
Not sure if this is a creepypasta, but you made this very intriguing man! Would totaly love to see more content like this. Keep it up!
It's not a creepypasta. If you just search yt for Top Banana you can watch playthroughs of the whole thing. It's a real game, and photosensitive seizures from games are relatively common.

Super Mario 64 scared me as a kid
No, I'm serious.
The game felt so mysterious to me as a kid, like there was always something I didn't know
The also intrigued me, of course, as I wanted to uncover this worlds dark secrets
As I learned more and more through my various playthroughs it only got creepier.
I don't know if I was that kid who always had new games the day they release, but I'm definitely that adult who gets games the day they release.
So this wasn't a dream. I thought I was crazy but nope.
yuppppp
Thank you

@@PressStartToContinueYT my friend was and me were playing a anime fighting forgot was it called but anyway we’re playing and there was think like big blast in the game and that what made my friend go like that and after that drama we just went back to normal
TBH.....this game looks REALLY COOOL and fun to me!!!!!! Maybe its because im a completely insane burn out, but I so wanna try this. It looks visually stunning and reminds me of Rainbow Islands, which I love!
Man that new intro still looks hella slick
thanks!
Oh my god. That’s just… horrible. I am DEATHLY afraid of software gore, and I’m honestly kind of glad I wasn’t born yet. This game scares the life out of me, even the normal gameplay. There’s just so much going on and it’s just so low quality.
Geez, I instantly started to get a headache looking at that game footage.
Poor kid. If I was him I'd either burn the game or throw it away also why does UA-cam think the game is earthbound?
wait does it actually say that in the video?
i mean
it works
youtube compression seems to love this game.
and youtube apparently thinks this is earthbound?
Thanks for not putting the games audio in the video. I couldn't imagine the nightmares I would have.
2:30 Meanwhile Final Fantasy VII exists.
youtube: looks at top banana
also youtube:**MMMM YES EARTHBOUND**
These graphics don't look like they were made by a human. In fact, it looks like they threw a bunch of images into a corrupter and used them as graphics for the game. Straight-ass bad game design.
It looks like a broken rom hack vinesauce would play but someone genuinely looked at it and said “yeah. This is a good idea. This is art”
I’m guessing after that games had to start using the epilepsy warning, but that makes me wonder about the lightning effect in Mario kart. Did that effect him? Or maybe it was quite literally sensory overload from “drug trip: the game”
This game looks like
someone puked on it
And then poured multiple
different types of paint on it
Also sorry to hear
about your friend
hopefully he's ok
Genuinely thought this was a Crow64 situation for a moment
This makes Awesome Possum look like a solid classic in comparison.
Yeah, when i saw this video i was like "It's Top Banana, isn't it?".
I got here from looking up the game
It shows earthbound in the description
Oh boy that title screen is definitely gonna haunt my dreams
I've heard of this game before, I actually grew quite fond of it's weird as hell soundtrack. The charecter in the thumbnail looked familiar
