One reason is I’m in southeast Ohio. I live on top of a hill . I also live between two towns one is about 4 miles from me . The other town is in the opposite direction as town one and about 7 miles from me. Once I see how far I can reach with my base station . If that doesn’t help with my range goals I’m going to set up a couple simplex repeaters. I will need to know what I need to tell family and friends what frequency to use. The idea is to have backup communication. Also be able to communicate with family and friends to guide them safest routes to my home.
When you set up the frequency for the radio that’s hooked to the repeater ,the radios that will be trying to contact you using the repeater will they need to use the same frequency? Meaning I’m in your area want to talk to you all I need to do is use the same frequency?
Yes, exactly. This is a “Simplex repeater”. It’s basically a parrot. It will repeat back what ever it is aloud to receive. It’s good for covering multiple valleys where direct simplex como isn’t possible.

I understand what you mean. A backup is always nice to have.
Did you end up having enough sun for your solar panel?
Yes, it worked well. In the winter, however, I had to remove snow a few times and did have a low voltage warning.
