    Last year Florida was hit by Hurricane Ian which was the third-costliest weather disaster in US history, but this particular vacation home was able to power through, literally, because of new game changing solar panel technology while other nearby solar owners were left without electricity for days even though the sun was shining. But this one called Congo Breeze is an EV owner’s dream because they do not charge for electricity thanks to their huge 60-panel solar system tha t covers 100% of their power consumption even with a heated pool and a dedicated level 2 EV charger on-site. The biggest drawback for solar panels, especially where I live in Kentucky and even here in Florida, is that electricity is really cheap compared to most other states so the time it takes to recoup the cost is much longer than somewhere like California for example. But for someone like me who is planning to stay at my current house for at least 10 years it’s almost a no brainer to get solar because I know I’ll break even in that time frame all while running on clean renewable energy. This has a 25.2 kW solar system, comprised of 60 solar panels, along with a home battery that had a total cost of $80,000 which sounds like a lot but it’s actually a much better deal than what my quote was for my house as far as price per watt goes If the grid goes down for any reason (such as a in a storm or hurricane) even if the sun is shining most solar panels cannot be used to generate electricity because they require the grid. The IQ8 micro-inverters are installed in conjunction with the solar panels and although they are more expensive they are the industry’s first grid-forming micro-inverters with split-phase power conversion capability to convert DC power to AC power efficiently using an integrated circuit so there’s no need to send the energy to the grid for AC conversion. The IQ8’s paired with other required hardware form a feature called Sunlight Backup which is able to power essential appliances and devices during a grid outage when the sun is out which solves a huge problem compared to legacy solar systems. The grid was down, but the solar panels and IQ8s not only produced enough electricity to power the essentials but also enough to charge the home battery during the day, and then at night the house switched to the home battery. You can see from the Enphase app that Congo Breeze has not only offset 100% of its electricity needs but it’s produced an excess amount of power over its lifetime which is extremely impressive.

    I have an 8kw system in the Philippines with 3 large Lithium batteries.
    There’s no net metering option so I can’t sell excess electricity into the grid. I Disconnect from the grid except on rare occasions where it’s been overcast several days in a row. So far only 2x this year.
    I have a swimming pool so I usually run the pool pump between 10 am and 2 pm. Batteries charge up at the same time.
    The best part of my experience is not having to rely on local power which is often barely able to run any equipment (such as a compressor) and air conditioners. A few months ago my neighbour asked if he could charge his phone at my place. He explained that the power had been out for 4 days. I had no idea…

    Hi Andy,
    We have 2 Tesla's (M3,MY), a Tesla Wall Charger in garage on a 50A breaker. We have 12.4 Kw Tesla solar panels and 2 Power Walls (current version). I live in CA with a reliable grid and one of the best priced local Energy companies. We have had multiple short term outages and one 12 hour outage during storms last winter.
    Our system works seamlessly during outages to the point where not even the lights flicker in the changeover. We are able to home charge out Teslas (+/- 90% of charging is done at home) and the batteries are always topped up to 100% by solar energy.
    We send a good amount of energy to the grid but are poorly compensated for that energy but still, our $300 monthly electric bill is now $30/mo. In the winter, our gas usage goes up considerably making a heat pump HVAC system next years priority. All and all we love our Tesla cars and Solar System. My hope is Tesla will manufacturer a heat pump HVAC system and that will replace our 25 Y/O HVAC but the incentives now are good so waiting for Tesla might be impossible but I would love to have all energy generation and consumption managed by the Tesla App. That is the perfect scenario.

    Back in 2016 I took an EV road trip from Atlanta, Ga. to Tybee Island, Ga. for Xmas. Shopping for AirBnB/VRBO lodging, my first choice was this cute house not far from the beach. I asked the property manager about plugging-in my EV during my stay, just a 120V/15A outlet would do, and she contacted the owner of the property, who said they would charge me $150 extra for the electricity (for my 4 day stay). I showed them the math of the 21 kWh battery pack in my Chevy Spark EV and how much it would cost, which was not even $5, and offered to pay twice that, and they promptly refused to rent to me. LOL

    Great review Andy. On my last home, in 2017 I installed an SMA regular inverter for my solar system and when the power/grid was down, if the sun was shining I could still get power for 2000 watts to keep essentials going. Funny thing is that in 8 years of living there my power never went out so I never got to try it out. But I live in sunny Tucson. My other tip is that you will likely save money by hiring a small and local solar company vs the big chains. I look a contractor with lots of experience, with good reviews who is easy to communicate with.

    Thanks for this video. I live on the east coast of Florida and didn’t want solar panels because they don’t work if the grid is down. This sounds like a good alternative. I would also like to hear about your trip down with your Tesla. Thanks for all your hard work.

      When I bought my solar in 2018, Tesla was not the lowest price of the 4 quotes I got, but they price matched my lowest, so I went with them. Now that I have two Tesla vehicles, I appreciate the integration, though I have no intention of getting a Powerwall.

    Hi Andy. I have had solar systems on two homes. Both were installed by a local company but they used Enphase micro controllers on each panel and each pair panel so that they did in fact give you the direct energy from each panel and give you more complete panels charging, even when they were shaded. At the time I had these systems installed 2013 and the other in 2017 Tesla systems and good battery systems we’re not available 🎉in Austin Texas that’s changed and if I had to do over again, I would go with Tesla for everything! They are more expensive but their integration is worth it. Either solar panels or solar roof and at least three powerwalls. if you have to get a new panel I suggest Spann. Good luck! You reviews helped me buy my first model 3 in 2019.❤

    There are a lot of good questions here. I think you ought to do a follow up explaining the "no solar if no grid" stance. It sounds like that can be the case, but that Enphase is not required in order to be able to get solar energy for the home when the grid is down.

  • @GapRecordingsNamibia
    @GapRecordingsNamibia 6 місяців тому

    Just a minor correction, You solar panels generate energy no matter what, If you have a grid connected or grid tied inverter then yes your power generation is down.

    Every home and business should install a rain water collection and storage system along with solar panels.
    Even in areas where rain is infrequent it is crazy to waste the little rain that does fall and waste it.
    We need to stop planting green lawns and switch to local native plantings around homes.
    It is crazy to plant lawns and build golf courses in dry desert areas. We waste too much water and electricity.

    I'm assuming the 'new' tech here is having panels with microinverters working alongside the back-up battery inverter? Having a solar system that works when the grid is down is most definitely not new... There are several factors that determine if your system can function when the grid is down. Grid disconnect, electrical demands of your house, adequate inverter & storage capacity for those loads, separation of critical vs non-critical loads, etc.

  • @darkenergy5686
    @darkenergy5686 10 місяців тому +4

    Why does a solar system require the grid to be "up" to function for the house? If the grid goes "down", wouldn't an automatic disconnect separate the solar system from the grid and let the house function independently until grid power was restored? What am I missing here?

    • @Yogandrew108
      @Yogandrew108 10 місяців тому

      My understanding is just that what you are talking about takes more electronics.

    • @riznliz
      @riznliz 10 місяців тому

      Automatic Disconnect systems are rarely installed and unless a whole house backup battery system is installed. Micro inverter systems are typically looking at the grid to see if it is OK to convert and send 100% of solar power to home + Grid.

      According to my understanding, it shuts down for safety reasons because there may be workers out there repairing the broken cables. Though I think if you have battery backup it will keep on producing unless the battery is full.

    • @darkenergy5686
      @darkenergy5686 10 місяців тому

      @@Yogandrew108 Just because it takes more electronics doesn't mean it can't work as intended. I know that the power company wants to make sure there is no backfeed from the solar system during an outage, but that's why you would employ an automatic disconnect to prevent an unsafe situation. And who's to say that a bunch of microinverters are better than a single Victron or whatever when properly configured. I would love to know more about the "whys" on the system in the video.

    I really wish Tesla would open up a Vehicle-2-Home option to utilize the car as a backup battery like others offer. Even if it could only output to a single outlet so one could plug in a refrigerator at least. But maybe that would infringe on their Powerwall market.
