You know, considering that this bloke was thrown out of a choir because 'he could not sing' - I think he found the perfect way to say 'up yours!' Steve Balsamo has that rare talent of not just singing a song, but actually feeling it - he's the same in Notre Dame de Paris - he's just brilliant in everything. And he got thrown out of a choir because he couldn't sing. I don't think this particular performance is his best, but it's still stunning.
Steve Balsamo and recently Vaclav Noid Barta are my top 2 for this song. Every singers have their own era but for my more modern taste, I find these 2 as my standard singers for this difficult musical aria.
Truly fantastic. Steve Balsamo and Glenn Carter are best performers of Gethsemane I've ever heard. I also enjoyed Michael Crawford's cover. I've never really liked Ian Gillan's version, and I absolutely despise Ted Neeley's screechy, unpleasant voice. Balsamo's version is very good though. Very well done!
Steve Balsamo's voice fits the Broadway version, while Ted Neeley's voice fits the original angsty and rockier sound. Remember that Jesus Christ Superstar is a ROCK OPERA, so there will be screaming (clean yet gritty) as an expression of pain and anger.
Bonjour !
@Jura88 LOL. Are you going to make me shut up? I like the music just fine. It's his god awful singing that I'm complaining about. I just can't wait for your response. Hugs.
Man,Steve definitely owns this song. No one's version is better than his!!! Simply outstanding.

My favourite for this song. He is more than a great singer.
The best version ever!!
Never ever hold your amazing voice back, Steve. Let me "feel it burn me."
This is the most amazing singer I have ever heard!!! I love how he sings this song.....so authentic...the absolute best!!
I was at this concert. Steve's performance was stunning-it simply blew me away. Thanks so much for the vid.
one religious experience to hear is rendition.....definitely the finest....
Fantastic, simply fantastic...
the definitive best!!!!!
bloody hell.....shivers....
Superb. The current 'Superstar' programme has only one who could even attempt, this - Nathan James.
Very pleasant and strong voice

Beautiful! Praise our Lord Yeshua, forever. Amen.
Wow!!!!! El mejor de los mejores!!! Fantástico

Es un himno a Dios y Jesús
@metalbass406 I think the movie version with Neeley is a bit better, but this one is almost perfect.

Teddy nearly had the best voice and I love him in Jesus Christ Superstar, although this man is quite awesome he's a close second!
Too right
@omegagilgamesh I concur.
Shit, this man can sing!
Awesome!
but i prefer gillan's version
two big vocalists
I think he was getting emotional on this one.
He cries in every version. It's spectacular and so real.
Thanks again Husband Philip Paris from I can dream Theatre Saving Jesus
I like this version a lot.. but still to this day I have yet to see anyone come close to Ted Neely. He just had that rockyraspysoul in his voice.
he's holding back a little bit on this one. Still beautiful though.

I still think that Ian Gillan was the best at this song...
que fea esta version cero emocion me cargo no me gusta jamas se compara a Ted Neeley el es el maestro
@Jura88 LOL. Are you going to make me shut up? I like the music just fine. It's his god awful singing that I'm complaining about. I just can't wait for your response. Hugs.
Colm Wilkinsons version is way better
@hirhodes Ted Neeley sounds way worse.
wow...nicely done.....
It just doesn’t sound as desperate in tone as Ted Neely. He is a great singer, but he is just singing without feelings
Steve Balsamo originated the role of JC. He was absolutely stunning as JC! See some original videos.
Sounds like someone killing a cat.
