I have been known to say that when I get stuck in an argument where the other person just keeps coming back around to the same point that is based on their other points. Which you wouldn’t think was as common as it is. At least for me.

@@Kazza_8240 In general. Scully would work all kinds of interesting and obscure cultural references into his game-calling, as naturally as if he was sitting across from you having a beer. Sure, the Hu on first reference is kind of obvious, but the way he frames and delivers it as if he really has been waiting his whole career to be able to say it is what I was specifically referring to.

FUN FACT: A gold record of "Who's On First" is in the National Baseball Hall Of Fame and Museum, and a video of the sketch plays continuously on the hall's screens. In 1999, Time magazine named it the Best Comedy Sketch of the Twentieth Century. An early radio version has been placed in The Library Of Congress's National Recording Registry. And in 2005, "Who's On First" was included on the list of 100 Most Memorable Movie Quotes by the American Film Institute.

This routine was around long before this was recorded. They started on the Vaudeville circuit and then were hired by possibly the stupidest man to ever work in radio. He didn't want hire them, one of the all time greatest comedy duos, and then having hired them didn't want them to do that baseball skit, arguably one of funniest bits of comedy in the English language. Who's on first is so huge that the title is an idiom used by people who have never seen it.
Kind of relevant to the channel the show Animaniacs did an amazing parody of it set at Woodstock.

You've really got your facts wrong - they can't even be called "facts." First of all, Abbott & Costello teamed up in 1936 when they were both in burlesque, which is not the same as vaudeville. "Who's On First?" was developed over time, based on other routines that included puns with words like "who" and "what." They became regulars on radio on "The Kate Smith Show" beginning in February, 1938, where they performed "Who's On First" for the first time on March 24th of that year. There was no guy who objected to them doing the routine on the show.

WHO'S ON FIRST was part of the incredible wealth of old vaudeville skits that the comedy team of ABBOTT & COSTELLO brought to the world. WHO'S ON FIRST actually evolved from an earlier vaudeville skit called WHO'S THE BOSS. It was one of many skits that relayed on double-meanings and play-on-words to make them work. ABBOTT & COSTELLO used the skit many times on radio and then in the movies and finally on their own TV show. The fact that they had done it so many times assured that during the times when they "lost their place," as we see twice in the just-played video, they could ad lib their ways back on track. It is, indeed, the best example and most-loved skit of its kind in modern media. Dennis

All Abbott and Costello films are worth some laughs. Pure comedy genius. J-Vonn, you might like an old TV series, "The Honeymooners" with Jackie Gleason and Art Carney. Early sit-com, set a lot of the standards (Like Carney as the neighbor who just pops in.) Also, the audience reacted at the open so strongly because it was a well-known routine, on radio and in their film "The Naughty Nineties".

Classic 'Fall guy - Straight man' duo! This was a winning combo back in the 40's-50's! :) Realize that it was my Dad that said, "Hey listen to this! These guys are funny!" and put on a 78 RPM vinyl record for me as a 10 year old... 15 years after they recorded it! Most importantly, it's still funny as hell and my father would point out there wasn't a swear word in it!

Abbott and Costello, Red Fox, Red Skelton entertained thousands of our Earth brothers and sisters not once using a dirty joke, politics, are degrading another person.
Way back in the day I lucked out and got to meet Red Fox as he was giving me his autograph he stated that a sharp funny mind doesn't need to use the things I stated above to bring humor to the audience. That man had a heart of gold.
I can see in my mind's eye all of our Earth Brothers in the happy ground with everybody laughing and rolling down those pearly streets. 🤠

There's been a few great comedy duos in the last century, Abbott and Costello, Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis, Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor, Chris Farley and David Spade. They were all perfect together, each playing off the other, never missing a beat, each had their audiences rolling in the isles laughing in their own special way. This skit was one of the best ones, and it's still funny all these years later. With they way 2020 has affected everyone around the globe we could all use a good laugh, so go dust off your favorite comedy movie, or record and take a break from all that has happened.

I grew up near Paterson and in fact worked there for a while after I got out of high school in the mid-'60s. There were still a lot of people in town--especially in the Italian section--who knew Costello from when he was a kid, and after he made it big he would often come back to Paterson for appearances and charity events. Everyone I ever knew who had known him absolutely loved him, no one had a bad word to say about him.
