Why you need to buy a Playstation 2 before its too late

- The PlayStation 2 rightly has a place in a lot of people's hearts, it's a fantastic console and it's still accessible with a massive library of games. In this video I talk about why it's one of my favourite consoles with my recommended games to start off your collection!

Always worth mentioning that most modern TVs still have component sockets, which the PS2 supports, you'll only get 480p or 576i but on an OLED the PS2 still looks pretty decent. Or if you're luck enough to have a high end 1080p tv that still has a glorious scart socket, then you're in retro heaven - just make sure to have a dedicated scart, not one of those 3 into 1 converter things.
Yes good point! I started off with a PS2 and a scart plug on my (older) flat screen TV. It's not as good as CRT but if you don't have the space or want to invest in a CRT TV it's perfect to start off with
There now exist adapters which you plug directly into the ps2, and plug the hdmi cable into the adapter. Draws power from the usb port of the ps2. Very handy.
Those internal scalers are really bad, its best to just get a proper upscaler. The problem with most PS2 games are interlaced, though you can force progressive mode with freemcboot*/gsm . Having something that does proper deinterlacing can have some mind blowing results, but devices run expensive (retroGEM HDMI mod, retrothink5x or 4k). For a bit more budget oriented options retrothink also has their 2x devices (I think these are like 80 bucks, not cheap but definitely worthwhile), which get you 90% of the way there. At any rate the results will be a lot better than using any TV scaler or cheapo hdmi converters. Just for specifically PS2 you kind of want one a bit better due to the advanced deinterlacing options.

In my experience (in the USA) modern TVs don't have any analog inputs anymore. Have to keep around some older displays or do HDMI mods to keep older consoles easily playable with good quality. You can sometimes find 1080p displays with both analog and digital inputs at auctions for good deals. I got a large NEC P462 monitor at an auction that has basically every port/signal known to man (BNC adapters needed for some) and will be hanging on to it for dear life.
@@hugevibez Yeah sadly the PS2 doesn't look very good without a good deinterlacer on a flatscreen, it's one of those consoles that looked the best in RGB on the later CRT models. I use the Retrotink 5x from Mike, and it looks very good on my OLED. But it's a costly route to go with linedoublers and scalers, anything below the OSSC is not worth it IMO. The quality will suffer a lot, it's then better to find a cheap CRT instead.

The PS2 can also be modded to store and play games off a hard drive using the network adapter and a program stored in the memory card.
You can still find everything required for modifying the PS2 online.
Modifying also extends the life of the PS2 being it greatly reduces wear on the PS2 lens.

One of my regrets was selling my PS2 slim in a car boot sale, 11 years ago. I did last year find my original Xbox in the loft though.
I doubt anybody's heard of it before but San Andreas Grand theft Auto is an amazing game
N64 and game cube are also a really good alternative although N64 might be a bit more pricey I think
For me, the PS2 Slim is easier to clean, and the disc reading tends to be better. I had a regular PS2, and the launch titles became harder to read over time. I didn’t have that problem with my PS2 Slim. And as for cleaning, the PS2 Slim is easier to open, give a light dusting, and close, in order to keep its longevity up. I’ve had my PS2 Slim for over 15 years, and it still works perfectly.
I have a PAL/US/Japanese PS2, so 3 in total. I also have 2 PS3's with PS2 B/W compatibility. I'm covered.

The ps2 xbox and gamecube era is possibly the best. I have been collecting for the gamecube and early 360 since those were the ones I primarily grew up with. I had a PS2 as well since my parents managed to get me a used one for dirt cheap. One of my favorite PS2 games is Dragon Quest 8... or just Dragon Quest as it was known in Europe 😂
I do agree! I think something that the following generations missed is that experimental and fun element to gaming. The PS3 and 360 felt a bit more like a money making machine with far too many FPS games.
Late last gen was my favourite - had many late nights on apex & wow, something i miss. As modern games are lacking and have been for years, I’m playing lots of ps2 rn
@@heart_of_a_daedra3649 I do think that we are overall in the best time for gaming. The only thing that is lacking is that the Triple A games that feel larger than life are really below expectations right now. Like, young kids now won't get to experience games being released at the technological peak at the time that are legit amazing, with few exceptions like Elden Ring etc.
@@Lydgendary I think the reason why games back then were so fun was that the budgets were low enough for them to take risks, whilst still feeling like technological marvels since that was the best graphics we had ever seen.

That PS2 era will never be matched with the variety of games that were available. I bought the OG ps2 in 2002 just to play GTA 3 plus it was a DVD player! Then when PS3 came out i neglected the ps2 but lately I've gone back and modded my slim so i can enjoy games i never got to play. Great video👍

Best console generation IMO. If you were lucky enough to own them all you really were winning.
PS2 was the workhorse, all 3rd party games were released on it and it had great exclusives and the most accessible.
Gamecube was like the weird artist, it didn't release a lot but the games it did release were all incredible.
Xbox was the online/multimedia beast. Transformed the way we gamed with online and using it as a PC living room media player.
Man, what a time I had back then...
Absolutely loved all three consoles including the GBA during that era. Heck, I'm still discovering games for it like the Burnout and Fatal Frame games. Though now I play them via PCSX2.

But you're right, the sixth gen systems all have a reason to own them, unlike now where PS5 games are also on PS4 and PC, or Xbox games also being on PC and other platforms.
7th was the last generation I personally think is worth owning all systems, or even ANY systems for that matter. Switch is the last one to truly have exclusives and incentive to own.

Same here, just got one yesterday and a bundle of games. GT3 and GT4 were in the bundle as well as GTA Vice City amongst others

I would recommend the warriors by rockstar games,the game has a dark grimy atmosphere and really captures the new York crime ridden feel of the late seventies.

Since i use the PS2 emulator i dont even need my old PS2 Slim anymore. Its a great experience to play this old games on 2560x 1440p
This. No one should be paying these markups for old games. Especially when they play better on emulators. Higher framerate, higher resolution, customizable controls, and your choice of controller.

emulation is fine, but a) not everyone has a computer that will run some emulators nicely, and b) sometimes people enjoy the original hardware and game experience and that's fine too. The markups for retro stuff is insane because, well, the market is what it is unfortunately @@TheRyanshamowski

What’s the game I really want to play on PS2 that I can’t play on the PS3 PS4 PS5 resident evil code Veranicca or resident evil outbreak 1-2 that didn’t get a remake plays bad on PS2 how about marvel Vs capcom 2 new age of heroes that breaks your PS2 if you play it a lot the PS2 games can also break your PS3 console I don’t think of PS2 as a great console it breaks your lucky if your PS2 can still read your PS1 games
Great list. The Sly games.. Hitman,Max Payne and Nfs MW and Def Jam. By far some of the best Ps2 games.

The PlayStation 2 is starting to slowly increase in price but as you said the console is still cheapish but the games are very cheap! Most of them anyway xD There's so many games for it, I could spend a million hours on it! My favourite games include Gran Turismo 3, Dead Or Alive 2, THPS 3, Dragon Ball Z Budokai 3, Ace Combat The Belkan War & Metal Gear Solid 2 & 3! Oh & can't forget GTA!
I've had a FAT PS2 since 2002 & I also own a slim since 2023! I actually prefer the slim model! I love the smaller form factor, the console is even more reliable than the FAT & I love the 2000s look of it :) The Ultra Slim is a no go mind xD
I feel the PS2 is the best of the 6th generation & I find it is my favourite console of all time! :D
As for video output, as people are saying here, some HDTV's still have analogue inputs which look decent with PS2 but, if you are in my shoes with a 4KTV with none of those, you'll need an upscaler & unfortunately most are terrible xD The Retrotink 2x and some of its knock offs like the ODV Converter are good starting upscales for around £50 - £80:)
The OSSC line multiplayer Upscaler I own is great and allows for 480p support from both RGB SCART & Component :) It will even line double it to 960p which is amazing on any HD or 4K TV! RGB using 480p will only work on RGsB supported upscalers or displays so beware when trying RGB with 480p :) Component is the easier option for the games that support 480p! Also make sure the video cable is decent and not a cheap unbranded one!
No matter how you play, CRT, HDTV, 4KTV, Emulation, Modded, the PS2 is absolutely worth it!
Last point, if you have a PS2 that is modded or has a region free switch, it is worth looking into the Japanese versions of some games as they are cheaper than the PAL versions of the same games :) Many more NTSC games have progressive scan support compared to PAL PS2 games & can be an interesting experience!

I bought a ps2 last week from a charity shop for 25 quid and went down to cex for silent hill 2, couldn't believe it was 60quid and I couldn't afford it. Luckily my brother had it stashed and gave me it. True story. But I'm so happy I can play maximo and SH2. Happy days.

I must say, my ps2 looked like rubbish on my 4k tv and even my regular 1080 tv. I'm better off up-scaling it using the emulator for PC.
That's fair, I would say it's always better to play on a CRT if possible but also appreciate not everyone can do that
I've got four PS2s. A few of them still have dedicated screens attached to them for portability.
the 5500 fat model is the one I highly recommend getting because not only does it have an expansion bay for storing games onto but also because it can be soft modded with Mechapwn to unlock it to play games from any region and also to play backup ps1 games which is extra important since the ps2 plays orginal playstation games flawlessy at their native resolutions. crispy scanlines if you still own a CRT television.
That's the PS2 model I own. And you're right, it is the best one to own. It was the final fat model to release before they went to the PS2 Slim.

360 was great too. You can play single player games off disk without internet access.
i feel sorry for you if you really believe that, the PS2 was an incredible console, and the console i grew up with, but to say it’s the last great era of gaming, is just false. video games have come such a long way, and is really the only form of media to be making incredible advancements in the past 20+ years since the PS2 came out.

i agree ps2 is amazing, but i highly recommend downloading an emulator and saving urself hundreds of dollars and time waiting on mail. collector's market has spilled over to the player market. ps2 games being cheap is subjective, it all depends what you want to play, and if you get the emulator you can just play all of it, including japan titles.
You are totally right, i bought a ps2 and ps3 but all the games i want i could also play on pc with much higher fps and in 8k resolution.
For collecting games it is just became to expensive. There are few titles you wanna original but for the rest it is just a waste of money.

If you have unlimited box storage space, yes. If not, I would mod a ps3, get a decent internal and external hard drive and store ps1, ps2 (mod works on any ps3 system) and ps3 games on them.
I think box and cd/dvd preservation isn’t important, but the data on them is.
Yes you can store them on a modded ps2 and hard drive, but I find that process more cumbersome and problematic.
I bought my original ps2 back in 2018 from cex for £20 unboxed. In my opinion ps2 is greatest console of all time just the library games and it was ahead of its time.

3:40 What does it mean, Playstation Slim and Ultra Slim? The Playstation 3 has a Slim and a Ultra Slim (Or Super Slim). But not the PS2! The Ps2 has only the Ps2 Slim.
My favourite console of all time, I got a boxed and unboxed thick PS2 and they both didn’t work properly :( So I had to settle for a slim because I just wanted a working unit at that point.
Can’t wait to dive into game collecting for it and finding out obscure games if I come across them. Modern gen gaming just doesn’t hit the same. Great video!

I still have my PS2 and love to boot it up and play the oldies. Great point on the prices still being decent! Some games like Siren are in the hundreds of USD, but others are definitely cheap. Yet still amazing games. Rayman 2 The Great Escape I have for N64 and it is the best Rayman game of all
I still have my original one that I got for Christmas in 2000, and other than the disc tray sticking a bit, it still works fine.

Several EA, Rockstar, Capcom, Ubisoft and Konami games...Burnout Series, Midnight Club, GTA, Manhunt, Devil May Cry, Onimusha, Silent Hill, Metal Gear, NFS, 007, SSX, Splinter Cell, Prince of Persia Trilogy...and a lot more.

I wish I kept my original 1st PS2. I have the slim (in the closet). I have probably 100 copy games (burned in CD’s)… though, I have not played them (and probably never will). Though, it nice having these things as collection.
I still have 3 PS3’s, 2 PSP’s, 1st PSvita, PSTV, PS4 and PS5.
**No physical games for PSP, PSVita, PS2… but many are downloaded.

Nooo not a single mention of Final Fantasy :'(. Specially X! It's such a classic Playstation game as they are exclusive to PlayStation since Final Fantasy VII on PS1 :D. Lovely video! I enjoyed it all (apart from the hidden Final Fantasy hate.. Naah just kidding..)
I was very late in getting a ps2 (2005) as i already had an OG Xbox and Dreamcast. But then some great exclusive games like Shadow of the Colossus and God of War came out. The library is unmatched, and the graphics often hold up very well over 20 years later. Like you said the games are still very inexpensive so it’s a great time to start or build up a library.
Backwards compatible with PS1 games too!. Many more to get, you might like to seek out - Resident Evil series, Silent Hill series, Burnout series, Devil May Cry series, Colin McRae, Dead or Alive, Star Wars Star Fighter, Smuggler's Run, if you have a CRT and light guns, the Time Crisis games.

Thankfully, I kept all my ps1 Ps2 and Ps3 games and collected various versions of consoles along the way. I play ps1 and 2 on my OG Ps3's and must recommend SSX and SSX tricky with Beastie boys DJ in charge of Trickys awesome soundtrack.

I'd agree that PS2 has a great collection of games. Although the 3rd party titles, I'd rather play on the original Xbox. That's just due to the 3rd party games being slightly better on the original Xbox. However, some games play better on PS2, like Tony Hawk Underground, and the WWF/WWE games are better on PS2. I would however like to add that due to need of internet access games on later consoles will not be worth collecting best examples are games with updates needed or live service games like Destiny 1 or Gotham City Imposters are unplayable.
I still have the PS2 I've owned since like 2002. Countless childhood memories, plus i used it as my dvd player until like 2020 and it still works great. Also doubles as a PlayStation 1. Probably the most value I've ever gotten out of 200 bucks.
I bought my original PS2 phat during its original run. Still have it to this day and now have two phats, one with the DMS4 Pro modchip and the other with FMCB. Not all games are cheap though, especially ones like the Silent Hill series. And, with the MemCardPro2 that's available for the PS2 you don't have to worry about running out of space on the memory cards anymore. I only buy games that I will play like the Final Fantasy series, Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Dax, God of War and the Resident Evil series. And, alot of the PS2 games are the original versions as later gen remasters either removed things or games doesn't run as well and filled with bugs (like the Silent Hill HD Collection on PS3....horrible). As an aside on your shelf I see you have the NES Zelda games...I have those too still in their original boxes.
I still own mine that I bought back in 2000. It's the original model not the slim. I've managed to figure out how to clean the inside from dust and debris and keep it running like new. Sadly the Gamestop near me stopped selling the preowned games several years ago but they may still sell the controllers and accessories like power cables and A/V cords. I havent't been inside a store in a while. I own a few classics like Final Fantasy X and X-2, Silent Hill 2,3,4, and Shattered Memories, The Suffering, The Suffering: Ties That Bind, a couple Burnout games, God Of War 2, and several others.
At this point, with all of the collectors and ridiculous prices for some of the popular games, just get a phat PS2, setup FreeMcBoot, throw in a SATA HDD mod + a 2TB HDD, and enjoy yourself.
1-it has 2 of the best open world driver games (GTA Sanandreas and TrueCrimeNYC)
2-it has the best episodes of the Ace Combat series.
3-it has the best Tomb Raider and God Of War episodes of the series.
4- it has the best Tekken games of all the 7 series.
5- it has one of the best cnc style RTS strategy game (Conflict Zones)
6- it is the console with the biggest number of movie and television show based games (such things as the Matrix,24, Terminator etc)
7- it has the best horror game before Nintendo stol it and made it exclusive to the nintendo system (the project Zero series)

it only lacks in soccer games imo...all it needs is Horizon Zero Dawn and online servers and it can compete for the best console evet title.
The absolute only thing I dont like about the ps2 is that it makes me feel old cause I played as a child when it launched....And that most games require a serious time investment (jrpg wise). lol IDK when I lost my 'gamer status'. Otherwise, I've never not had a PS2 whilst ps3s and ps4s came and went. No interest in PS5.

The Dreamcast is less powerful than the PS2 and games on both look objectively worse on the former.
I find PS2 and PS3 the best consoles as they were affordable and the game titles released were massive. I played the PS2 as a demo unit but ended up owning a PS3 and PSP 3000 in my teens which were short-lived due to hardware issues and had to junk them to local reseller. Unfortunately I sold the game titles since my Sony consoles were defunct to the same person - I was sad. Anyways console games never picked traction in my region/country as the market demand is focussed more on mobile casual games such as Candy Crush, Snake&Ladders, PUBG, COD etc. which sometimes is monotonous . Right now I want this console, PS3 and PSP since I'm planning to pursue masters in interaction design and want to explore video games as future of interaction design.
giving the space i am working with at my house, i usually just collect the games i actually like, i collect ATLUS games besides that and tbh only the old games, like from the 90s and 2000s atlus games, i need to do that or else i will never stop lmao
I strongly suggest importing a PS2 from Japan as NUMEROUS good games were NEVER released outside this region like Popolocrois and Venus and Braves.
I have a modded PS2 paired with components cables + Retrotink 5xPro upscaler, games look great upscaled to 1080p on the large OLED TV.
PS2 is the best console of all time. Gamecube is second. Nintendo 64, XBOX (og), Dreamcast. I gave up on games in around 2007-2008, i was highly disappointed with PS3 and XBOX 360.... I also feel Gameboy SP, Gameboy Advance, PSP, Nintendo DS Lite are better than the Nintendo Switch by a long shot.
Fat PS2's look nicer, but they collect SO MUCH DUST! Slims are better IMO.
I feel they'll last longer due to its simplistic design. Also, I feel they probably don't hold dust like a ceiling fan.
I had 5 PlayStation 2 same as yours. I would buy Xbox 360 games are going up quicker than PlayStation 2 one of my PlayStation 1 is 175 pounds in Cex
With the disappointing state of modern gaming I'm doing exactly this, not just with PS2, XBox and 360 but I even dusted off my ancient PS1, N64 and SNES. The reader in my launch edition PS2 is dead though so I only have a slim but it totally works. When modern games are $70.00 a pop and hardly 1 out of 10 isn't trash it's a good time to investigate the past and let the future rot until it collapses and real talent enters the building again. I played a lot growing up but I think I missed nearly as much. If you are young then you likely have no idea of the treasure trove that's waiting for you for under $10.00/title from the golden age of gaming and don't be fooled by modern remakes, they do more that just update the graphics, some even go so far as to change characters and stories. That's not to mention the completely underrated value of actually physically owning the media in a way that made it so what you paid for is what you got and it didn't change with updates.

I Count Myself Lucky to Have 5 of these Consoles (In working order) As well as a fairly good size Library of games I Grew Up With! wouldn’t Sell them for Anything
still have my PS2 with a good assortment of games and my 52" 4k TV/Monitor (lol don't use the TV part it is my monitor for my desktop) still takes the PS2 connections..
Im lucky enough to still have my GameCube, ps one, and Nintendo 64. Great systems..briefly had a ps 2 but returned it...dam should of kept it. These systems were so dam cool. No updating nonsense like today.
I Run my ps2 games on my ps3 60g. 2 external 2 tb hardrives. Only have a few physical copies of my favorites. Sold my entire game collection 4 years ago to buy a house :(
I still have my original launch PS2 and it still works perfectly, they dont build them like that anymore plus get the HDD adapter and a free mcboot memory card and you can do all sorts with it

For me the games worth checking out except the obvious ones (resident evil, metal gear solid, gran turismo, tomb raider) are onimusha1/2/3 and outlaw golf 1/2.
Beyond good and Evil is a good one, and I don't think there's any difference what version you play. I've bought it on Gamecube, 360 and PC.
I got an OG PS2 a year ago and since then building a collection of over 40+ games is super easy.
Most games going between $10-15-20ish in box (with the manual usually) is generous for those wanting to build a library in an affordable manner.
However, you may occasionally run into a game that’ll be more like $30-40 if it’s a little more sough-after.
I think I bought my PS2 slim for 15 bucks about 10 years ago. Now the games have shot up in price. But will pull it out to play PS1 titles and PS2 RPGs.
Simply best console ever for me. Sturdy, cheap, hackable, low power consuption, if i should choose one to atomic bunker or flight to Mars, it should be PS2, or PSP. Only deteriorating controllers are problem, but it can be used with ps3 ones easily.
Its kinda funny this video scrolls across my UA-cam feed just as I recently reinstalled my Pcxs2 onto my pc. As someone old enough to remember gaming on an Atrari 2600, I agree the Ps2 era was the best gaming era. Hence, why I re-installed the emulator. I would recommend the emulator over the real system for multiple reasons, but one of those reasons is that I can upscale nearly ALL ps2 games to 4K. I have a host of other reasons should you want to know.
I recommend PS2 strongly to my Subs and viewers ,but only with functional disc drive in order to use actual discs instead of questionable iso dumps off fishy websites 🎉😂😮ps the GTA titles are nice , but i quite enjoyed "The Getaway"and "The Getaway 2 black monday"" , and i live in central Florida 😸👍

I seriously need to get a PS2 added to my collection, I have the xbox, gamecube & dreamcast. This generation of gaming was golden 🤗✨️💚
still have a ps1 .. that works and been modded{ will play all ps1 games } , ps 2 slim and the first gen ..x-box 360 and many games ,, ps 4 was last one i bought, play my pc more . it looks much better than any consoles.
Im pretty clueless when it comes to knowing about consoles but I brought ps2 several months ago cos as much as the ps4 look great I just cant gel with it. I m very ol skool anyway . Now I have more time on my hands I am looking for games Gran Turismo and good platform games..I brought the same one you suggested for £80 from a retro store...thanks for your upload..really interesting
I still have a PS2 slim and selection of PS2 and 1 games. Tried PS3 but for me the lack of backwards compatibility was a killer with the collection I had.
i have a modded phat ps2 with a hard drive and a slim silver console,the games are still very playable,im 43 and im reliving THE GETWAY dated but awsome...oh and soyouknow the graphics look much better on a CRT
its difficult to get the ps2 in the U.S.A the backwards compatible ps3 work wonders!
Ps2 is awesome. I think i have like 90% of the games I've wanted for it. For the games I dont have, I can play via the HDD FMCB (memory cardless) mod. I still buy random games here and there of they're cheap or jist look interesting.
I'm lucky I bought quite a few of these back in the day and now I'm looking at the prices and thinking I might sell them haha
Okami and God Hand. Okami is beautiful and God Hand is difficult with rough controls but OMG. Also mutant chihuahua races .
The 6th gen was definitely the best IMO. The games hold up today graphically and ones like Burnout and SSX are still a blast to play on PS2.
just wished everything before hdmi output wouldn't look so utterly shit on current tv's ...if you don't spend something in the 3-digit realm on a decent upscaler

Cheap is the word. Why? Because young people can't wait on the latest and greatest game or device? When one the price will go down not to good anymore in a year or two. For example the new games will cost $69 then a year or two will go down to $20. Why waste $69 when you can buy groceries or food and for $69 you can buy 3 games when the price goes down to $20.
