Honestly I’m 46 almost 47 now and this song really takes me back to my childhood, I used to love watching Adrian Mole, in fact everything was fantastic about the 80’s, music, clothes, tv, films the list is endless, oh and being a kid you were carefree, out making ramps to jump on your bmx, building camps with your mates, and it’s true about the street lights coming on and time to go in, I couldn’t think of anything worse than being a kid in 2023, glued to an iPad /iPhone or a computer, the internet ruined everything really 🫤
Early 40's here, 1st 2 books of Adrian Mole made feel similar to the character (outside of his ego at times) I was from a poor home, nerdy, bullied and felt underappreciated I did envy Adrian though a little as he got a girlfriend and had a good friend, and things like a bike.
the most nostalgic song in the whole world. the way the harmonies in the final reprise of the chorus make me tear up - the theme of adrian mole takes me back to being the exact age adrian mole was in the first book, ian dury's voice and the song are just the perfect combination that takes me to youth 🩷🩷🩷
Adrian Mole and Ian Dury are cultural nuggets of gold washed into obscurity by a tsunami of modern media. Wow. That sentence feels so intellectual. I might send it to John Tydeman.
@@jamesmason8436 ...Airwolf, Super Gran (props to the Big Yin for finding something to rhyme with "BA Baracus"), Box of Delights, Jeeves and Wooster, Magnum PI, the BBC Miss Marple adaptation with Joan Hickson, The Fall Guy... And if we're allowed to include themes from the 60s and 70s, I'd add Z-Cars and Who Pays The Ferryman.
Yep "The Diary of Adrian Mole" and "Boon" were my favourite telly programmes when I was a nipper. My favourite theme tunes as well. Heeeeeeeee! Nostalgia indeed, nuffink wrongk wiv it!
Rest in peace Mr Dury!! You were a great patron to Graeae Theatre Company and thats why they did a musical based on your music called Reasons to be cheerful and wowed over a thousand people at the paralympic opening ceremony playing Spasticus Autisticus!!!!!! !!! Oi! Oi!!!!
OMG, I had forgotten all about this one till now. What a fabulous tune this is. I think the 80's was a great decade for TV themes. My favourite ones are Minder (Dennis Waterman), Boon (Jim Diamond), Auf Wiedersehen Pet (Joe Fagin) and Prisoner Cell Block H (Lynne Hamilton)

matrix26uk the very last paragraph was Pandora arriving at the Piggeries. It doesn’t say anything about what she did when she got there, how long she was there and certainly not that they ended up ‘together’. For all we know she may just be exploiting his situation to help further her political career. We just aren’t told. What happens next is, I guess, down to the reader. I’d like to think they ended up together. But we don’t know that.
*What I learnt today:* Ian Dury sang "Profoundly In Love With Pandora" - the theme to the Adrian Mole series. Not quite sure how that passed me by, to be honest...
One of the best lyricists. The New Boots and Panties album was brilliant through and through, and Do It Yourself had some treasures on it too. Plus the standalone singles like What a Waste,Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick and the latter's B side There Ain;t Half Been Some Clever Bastards. I did watch the TV series of the first Adrian Mole book, having read the book, and so became familiar with this theme song.
Was a fan of the books and the TV series and actually bought this record when it came out. Was in and out of that record shop faster than the cashier could say, are really gonna buy that :)
i love this longer version of this song !!. and i love the secret diary of adrian mole tv series. i really want to see the tv series of the growing pains of adrian mole too, and i want to read the books.
I watched this series as a kid. But what happened to the lyrics ""I'm profoundly in love with Pandora/ adolescence proves to be a strain/ I'd gladly lay my heart before her/ despite these growing pains.""? That part is stuck in my head, but I can't find it in this version.
@devilskitchen08 Secret Diary was released in Holland. It's in English though. You might be able to find a copy on eBay. But you can't get rid of the Dutch subtitles.
So weird how JK Rowling never gave Sue Townsend a penny for clearly ripping off her original character identity and structure, Sue should've sued her, she would've destroyed her.
Great song, except that the lyrics gave away too many plot details! Also, I seem to recall the bass line sounding more like slap bass than like synth bass and being somewhat up in the mix. Still great, though.
It was and is fairly typical that the writers of the song would do the shorter version of the theme song for the show, then create a full length version later. I suspect that the latter was mixed differently or just simply altered by Dury.
Fucking hell life was miserable back then but at least there was creativity and freedoms . With peoples common sense dictating the premises. Now days it wouldn't be allowed for an adult musician to sing from the real perspective of adolescent. Artistic merit won out over virtual signalling twats and their idiotic calculations.

This song came into my head today, big fan of Ian Dury. Shame it’s not on Spotify
Same! Wish it was on Spotify too.
Reason I’m here to comment. Bloody Spotify!

The Genius I grew up listening to. Sir Ian Dury. God bless the guvnor.
sweet gene vincent....
don't forget Chaz Jankel, who wrote all the music
The 80s was the time for great TV theme tunes. Juliet Bravo, Only Fools and Horses,Minder,Grange Hill and this.
The Prisoner Cell Block H theme was another classic, I still have the 45 of it lol. So many great songs in the 80s of all genres.
Rockliffe's Babies, The Equaliser, Cheers, Knightrider, Casuality, Red Dwarf...

My mother's heart and soul
Have gone halfway up the pole
My father's on the dole
This is taking its toll
My friend Bert is much too old
And his dog's beyond control
Though it sometimes seems they're droll
It's a nuisance on the whole
I'm profoundly in love with Pandora
My poem has an intellectual theme
The tenderness with which I adore her
Goes all bouncy in my dreams
Yesterday my chin was clear
Now a new spot has appeared
Barry Kent had cost me dear
Till my Grandma interfered
The BBC know I'm sincere
In making writing my career
Wish my mum would come back here
Lots of ups and downs this year
I'm profoundly in love with Pandora
She's got knee-socks and treacle-coloured hair
The tenderness with which I adore her
Is something fine and rare
But, my father's in a mess
And there's a great deal of stress
At our house
And my major concern
Is that things might return
To normal
So get rid of that creep
And come back to sleep
In our house
We both miss you mum
So hurry up and come
Back home
My mother's heart and soul
Have gone halfway up the pole
Though it sometimes seems they're droll
It's a nuisance on the whole
Yesterday my chin was clear
Now a new spot has appeared
Profoundly in love with Pandora
Wish my mum would come back here
Lots of ups and downs this year
My mother's heart and soul
Have gone halfway up the pole
Though it sometimes seems they're droll
It's a nuisance on the whole
Yesterday my chin was clear
Now a new spot has appeared
Profoundly in love with Pandora
Wish my mum would come back here
Lots of ups and downs this year
I'm profoundly in love with Pandora
Things aren't always what they seem
The tenderness with which I adore her
Is indeed a love supreme
Wow, you definitely are a fan to write the lyrics out. 🎉🎉
Ian Dury was definitely the diffinitive article.. ❤

Was so glad that Adrian and Pandora ended up together!
matrix26uk In the long run, I don’t think they did. Not in the books at any rate.

She had the mother role in the tv -series in 1985.
