At Corfu airport in 1981 my girlfriend and I (she’s now my wife of 32 years!) realised that Ian Dury was in the same queue just in front of us with another guy and a couple of girls. She asked if she could take a photo and he was lovely, said of course, and she took a picture which we still treasure of Ian showing his teeth, one of which had the Union Jack flag on it. Lots of people asked for pics (this was before mobiles or 0:20 selfies were a thing) and he could have been forgiven for getting fed up but he was charming and kind to every request. I always smile when he comes on the radio and remember that day. Such a wonderful man.

Ian was a true legend and the blockheads were such a tight band.
When I was only 5 years old Hit me with your rhythm stick was released, even at that age I loved it.
I begged my parents to buy me it on 7" single I'm nearly 50 now and I never get bored of it ,and it's still my favourite track all these years later.
I still own that single today it was the first record I ever owned.
I've told my kids when I die, I want it playing at my funeral when I'm going through the gates.
I've gone on to be a massive blockheads fan great clever lyrics by Ian and amazing music from the band.
They'll never be another like Ian Dury a true wordsmith

I have been a fan of Ian Dury since New Boots and Panties in 1977. I still have my original vinyl copy and I still play it often along with Do It Yourself. Its hard to think of many artists who have given me so much listening pleasure over such a long time. For me, he is an icon. I bet he is looking down at today's music and thinking "WTF". You are a true star Ian Dury.

Ian’s songwriting gifts were really extraordinary, a true original who is sorely missed to this day. I used to work as a links engineer for ITN & one day the assignments desk said to me “you’ve got a live 2x way with Ian Dury.” It was done out in the street, I think it was Curtain Road in Shoreditch or just nearby, and the interview was about his charity work. Close to airtime the producer arrives with Ian & as I was trying to fit his earpiece for comms he goes “you’ll ‘ave trouble with that mate, I’ve got very small ears!” Sure enough, it was a struggle to fit, but we got there in the end & the interview down the line went ahead as planned. I kept thinking if only I’d known about it before coming into work that day I would have brought my copy of New Boots & Panties for him to sign!

I strongly suspect that his song Sweet Gene Vincent was also a reference to Gene Vincent. I saw Kilburn and the High Roads Support Sha Na Na at the Birmingham Odeon and was lucky enough to See Ian and the Blockheads at Brixton when they recorded Warts and... I also saw them at Madstock and the Town and country club. The pen ultimate show at Warwick University was wonderful he came on late to a standing ovation and I stood with tears in my eyes knowing that he was not long for this world. of all the people who ever wrote a lyric about me ID is by far one of the greatest ever, his wordplay and rhyming slang were second to none, He painted a picture like the Kinks could but with added venom, the village green became the tower block at the end of Kilburn high street, top bloke, one of the people that took pub rock to its highest levels along with the likes of Eddy from the hot rods and wilko johnson, seen them all many times, They're part of British music history gone but never forgotten, what got me with the blockheads was the high quality of all the musicians, they were exceptional and way beyond everyone at the time,

Polio is a horrific life sentence for those who contract it. Kudos to Ian Dury advocating Sri Lanka implements giving the Polio vaccine - it's a couple of drops on a sugar cube. That's all it takes to prevent it. My cousin born in 1937 in Melbourne Australia contracted it as a small child, she spent Mon - Fri in the hospital and Iron Lung before going home to her mum and dad each weekend. My Aunt didn't hold with the medical professionals thoughts at the time that exercise was bad for polio victims and had my cousin learning to swim, walk and do everything her brother and sisters would do. Norma grew up to be one of te most caring persons I've ever known. She loved life and people, she would send the kids (she had 5! 4 boys and a girl) round to any neighbour who was ill with a pot of soup or casserole. Her husband died of blue asbestos cancer in his early 30's. My oldest brother had emigrated to them in 1969 and they cared for him. When Norma's husband died and left her with 5 young children my brother helped out as best he could. She was an incredible human being and I wonder how much greater she'd have been without Polio something she never complained about. To anyone reading this and pondering giving their child a polio vaccine, PLEASE do it. I loved Ian Dury's music.

Living outside of UK I had not heard he had passed. What a legend and talent. Rhythm Stick is one of my all-time favourites even now and the band's precision untouchable. I had no knowledge of his biography and have been touched and even more impressed, hearing the hurdles he had to surmount to achieve excellence. Great respect to a true multitalent. I wish his family and children well. Thanks for this video. All the best, Rob in Switzerland

✌️💀.., You can't help but LOVE a guy who overcame the difficulties, & obstacles Life gave him.. He got lemons 🍋, & made Lemonade..!! Undeniably, a Winner, in thee truest sense ov thee word. An Inspiration, and, in his way, a Saint.., because, he set a very positive example.., Living proof, that the only true "limits", exist only in the imagination..~Peace.., (..&Rock on, baby..!!🎸✨️)

Anyone who can include the line “I could be the ticket man at Fulham Broadway station” in a song and make it work has to be alright.

Rocked the joint better than the Clash.
    More funk
    More swagger
    Peace Monkeys
