So I've got both of these is the opposite colourways (Lunar on Compact, Black on Regular). The top magnet flap comes off far too often on the regular sized one if the load approaches the 15L mark. The bag works best flatter at the top with most of the weight and volume at the bottom of the bag, or else the magents get loose. It's a much bigger issue if I'm trying to put the bag on after loading it up and closing it, and then a few steps later, someone tells me my bag is open. On the 12L Lunar colourway, it's less of an issue. I don't know if that's the effect of knowing I can only fit less gear in so I don't pack it as much, or if it has to do with the size, or if it has to do with the materials. Just my 2 cents.
100%. Having to constantly weight up what I put in this thing so the flap doesn't come off is a huge design flaw.

I'm really not sold on the top closure: There are reviews out there pointing out that the flap will come undone easily. Though it does look organized and accessible. It doesn't seem to crossover well to post work use cases like a quick run to the groceries.

Beautiful bags but it looks super easy for even unskilled pickpockets to break into... Not so sure about this. Love Bellroy though!

3. Take backpack off to put on overshirt
4. Be glad you didn't have to take of the bag
They did a great job with the Melbourne series bags. I've used mine for a few weeks now and it's great when I don't want to bring a lot of stuff. The only gripe I have is that the outside material likes to track cat hairs so I have to brush mine off with a lint roller quite a bit.

I got the normal size Melbourne Backpack Limestone vegan version yesterday. Great bag with nice asthestic. The Lunar colour was sold out else is my first choice.

I'm not a fan of the triangular flap on the top, and I've heard them coming loose a lot, the rest is exactly what I need. Are there others that are similar? Looking for a slim look.

I agree - those are probably the main two concerns most people have. 18L is smaller than the typical 20-22L. The magnets on the Melbourne are solid I must say. But I have heard instances where people have had trouble with the top flap.

Here's the logic at 5:05. If you need to get your t-shirt by swing the bag across and using the quick access zipper, then tell me, how do you put on the shirt with the bag still on, wouldn't it be easier to take the bag off?

I got it as I gift and the magnets aren't that strong. Bellroy Customer Service said that my item is not faulty and I should be packing less.. The side pocket is impossible to use without the magnets opening. It is advertised as an 18L bag with "SURPRISING STORAGE" but you will be able to carry max a laptop, a water bottle and a pouch. Maybe an umbrella. If you put a jacket in it that will open the magnet as soon as you move the bag to put it on or dash to take the bus.
Of course, your experience might differ based on what you carry but be aware that you might experience some of the issues I had or all of them.

I'm really interested in getting the Bellroy Melbourne Backpack (Compact) but I'd love to know if I can fit my 15inch Dell XPS inside the laptop sleeve! I think the compact version best suits my needs but I just want to make sure my laptop can fit inside the laptop sleeve compartment!
Sadly, the Bellroy Melbourne Backpack (Compact) only supports laptops up to 13” screen size or laptops with 30.41cm x 21.24cm dimensions. Cheers!
Hi! I'm just wondering if the 13" sleeve will fit a 14" laptop (such as a Lenovo t14). Would love to use this bag as a compact work bag and it'll tick all the boxes if it would fit my laptop :)
According to the Bellroy website, the 13" laptop sleeve is designed to fit laptops up to 13 inches in size. Therefore, it may not be the best fit for a 14" laptop like the Lenovo T14. However, Bellroy also offers a 15" laptop sleeve which should accommodate your laptop size.
If you are planning to use the Bellroy Melbourne backpack as a compact work bag, it's important to make sure that your laptop fits securely inside the backpack. This is the AusAir facemask! It's from a company based in Melbourne. Really minimalist, comfortable and independently tested. It's a slightly pricey mask though.

@@RushfasterTV I’m just not sure if I’d go to the compact or the regular size since I’m short and thin. It’s always my problem having to doubt if the backpack would look normal to me or too big for me bc of my size. Also, how I could maximize the space of the compact version would be great.. but we shall see if others would want to see that tho.

you mentioned there is no problem is securing the top no matter how heavy or light you pack the bag. That is completely wrong. Obviously you've not used the bag at all. If you pack the bag heavily or even medium, the top will flap open. The design is a failure. the bag will be open most of the time. The only time the flap is secure is if you pack the bag one quarter full. But why buy a 18L bag that limits you to a quarter full capacity ? that's 4.5L capacity. Even if you pack it half full, and you're riding a bicycle or any sudden movements will immediately open the flap. total design failure. Also the external material is a dust magnet. Need to have a lint roller to constantly keep it looking presentable.
I would expect you to point out all these in your review of the bag. If I just want to know the positive points only, I'll just need to go to Bellroy's website
