Great stuff. This is actually a very useful video. I'll likely be referring people to it when they have head questions. I think my favorite is the Aquarian Modern Vintage but that ADC calfskin head would be delightful to use with brushes! Thanks for doing this.

Never played calfskin but heard drummers like Mel Lewis who were adamant that a calf head was the way to go and now I hear what he means: very warm articulate sound so the ADC really stood out. Evans 56 was impressive too. I use Remo Coated Ambassadors primarily for their versatility - you get all the drum has to offer- but dampening brings you many of the more focused dryer sounds. Thanks for the experiment. Very informative

Amazing head to head (pun intended) - and likely already overused! Having played a majority of these heads on various drums I’m always amazed how different one drum can sound with just one variable changing. To my ear, the last head was the fullest and most round sounding as I listened blind to the head choices.
Calfskin it is as I looked at the order in the description, what a head!

Greeting from Ruse , Bulgaria 🇧🇬
I am not sure if am suitable to participate to the “ contest “ but I will express my opinion anyway ✌️
    ADC Medium Calfskin
Will be my temptation to say but skin drumhead, typically made from animal hides like goat, calf, offers a warmer, more natural tone with rich overtones. They often produce a deeper resonance and are preferred for traditional or acoustic settings due to their organic sound. In contrast, plastic drumheads are synthetic and provide a brighter, more focused sound with less sustain. but their consistency, durability, and ability to cut through amplified music, making them suitable for various musical styles and environments and i will say Remo Ambassador Coated is my first choice.
    Cheers,
    Dan

Thanks for the reply Dan! You are actually pretty close to where these heads are made so if you ever want to pick one up check out his website: austriandrumheadcompany.at/
Nothing is quite like playing on a real calf skin head. As for the Remo I hear you, they are tried and true. They work in almost any situation, good choice(:

I'm mostly a Remo guy, but the ADC Calfskin, Evans '56 Calftone, and Aquarian Modern Vintage heads all caught my ear. There was a warmth added without making the overall sound dull. I especially liked softer notes in the center with those heads - plenty of body while still being quiet. Thanks for doing this video!

Thanks for the lengthy effort for us! At the end of the day- in the grand mix without looking - e.g. a blind audition they all sound like a good snare drum.. it may come down to how it feels to the player when playing .... in choosing.
The clear emperor was the only one that seemed drastically different in sound...

Thanks for the comparison! I know they are a lot of work to put together. The Supraphonic is the perfect test bed for these tests. It's hard to beat the Coated Ambassador or G1, but the Modern Vintage and '56 Calftone sounded great as well.

I always use Ambassador coated on my '76 Supra. The Renaissance mellowed the sound some that the Ambassador coated had.
The Evans G1 coated sounded similar to the Ambassador coated.
Aquarian Modern vintage and '56 Calftone sounded good.
They all had a place in different musical settings on that drum. Cool demo man thanks.

The Aquarian Texture Coated, because it makes the snare sound like a wood-shelled drum. (The ‘56 Calftone Evans is noteworthy because it makes the drum sound like a wood-shelled drum with a Fiberskyn.)

Nice job Steve! 👍🏼 Fantastic experiment 👂🏼! I've played Remo Coated Ambassadors my whole musical life... using assorted muting techniques and changing only to a few Aquarian heads for specific genres or musical settings. Your video opened my ears to the Evans '56 Calftone, Evans HD, Aquarian Modern Vintage Thin, that I really liked a lot. The Calfskin head was beautiful, too... but we all know how susceptible they are to humidity. Great job! Thank you for your research. I appreciate it.

Thanks for the great video! I’ve always been a huge Evans fan, so every head by them is home to me. But the heads that really caught my attention were made by Aquarian , specifically the Modern Vintage Thin and Deep Vintage II. I’ve never played on one of those heads before due to their scarcity at big box music stores, they just don’t carry stuff like that. I’d be curious to do a demo on my own channel of my Kentville snare head, my hand tucked “recycled” calf head, and Evans 56 compared to the aquarian heads mentioned above. Thanks again for the great video guys!

    My pick... (Surprised me)
    Aquarian Texture Coated.
Why? I like the Remo Ambassador Coated along with the Evans G1 Coated. In this comparison, the Aquarian Texture Coated just had a higher tone and pitch that was over both aforementioned Heads from Evans and Remo. This Aquarian also gently and lightly suppressed the overtone ring that both the aforementioned Remo and G1 couldn't. I'm happily surprised. Will be giving the Aquarian Texture Coated next head change on my Supraphonic. Thank again. 👍😁🎶🎵🥁

I tend to prefer Remo Emperors for aluminum and steel snare drums. Cuts just enough of the overtones and gives you a fatter backbeat sound. Dig the comparison. Might as well do the same for tom and bass drum heads too.

Before I comment, please understand that I am a jazz player who needs sensitivity in acoustic, small venues. I play lightly and use a lot of brushes. Also, I use wood-tip sticks and wire brushes in varying thickness and profiles according to my needs.
I've used many brands over the years and now use primarily Remo Ambassador Renaissance batter heads on my snare drums because of the musical sensitivity and durability of the textured - non-coated - head which seems to last forever. All of my brushes sound fantastic with them.
Although I haven't tried them yet, the Remo Ambassador Fiberskyn sounds equally as good on video - but I would have to hear them in person before I commit myself.
If I was a rock drummer - which is what I played back in the 60's - the Remo Controlled Sound Coated sound great.
When all else fails, Remo Ambassador Coated are the universal head to fall back on for sticks and brushes.
I would like to have heard some brushes and also a wood shell snare drum. Other than that, this was a great video!

So many choices! As others have said, it's hard to beat an Ambassador. But in addition to that head, I really liked both Modern Vintage heads, the calf head and the Texture coated. I will admit being partial to Aquarian, but I like the warmth of the calf & vintage style heads, and I really like the feel you get from them. A close favorite was also the CS, which was my head of choice years ago. My least favorite was the clear Emperor. It sounded fine for backbeats, but once Stephen started playing ghost notes, I just heard a plastic sound from the head.

I’ve been excited & patiently waiting since the snare wires experiment. This comparison is amazing. In recent years - my experiments had been ambassador into Ambassador Fiberskyn. I was weirdly drawn to the renaissance head. I’ll be checking out the renaissance in the future. Lastly, thank you for including the calfskin head in the video. I appreciate the fiberskyn head & it’s similar simulation of calfskin thanks to this video. 10 out of 10! Keep up the great work. TY 🙏🏻

For me, the best one based on sound was the Evans Dry followed by Aquarian Modern Vintage and Evans Calftone, and the real calfskin head sounded good, too. I really didn't like the Emperor clear. They work great on toms, but I didn't care for it on the snare.

Excellent video. Some of those beads i know very well, but the one I liked the most that was new to me was the Aquarian Modern Vintage thin.

Awesome video Steve it’s hard to choose between the Remo ambassador coated and the Remo ambassador fiberskyn but I guest I would go with the coated. Thanks for he video.

To my ear the Aquarian Modern Vintage II and the A D C Medium Calfskin heads sound similiar with the calf head just a bit darker. So those being the two I like the most given the sound they create I would go with the Aquarian Modern Vintage II and that's only because of calfs tendancey to stretch and tighten due to weather conditions. Both heads are great for brush playing with the calf head being the best suited for brush work.

I'm most impressed with the adc medium calf. It just sounds so warm and full bodied. I usually go with remo fiberskyn.I wish real calf was affordable. I just got someones homemade supersensitive supraphonic on a trade I could really use the head for. Currently I have a kevlar head on it kinda weird but cool. Thanks

The Aquarian Modern Vintage sounded the best to me. Next would've been the standard Remo Ambassador. I liked the thin Modern Vintage probably because it was thin. I've put top and bottom thin diplomats all over my set, except for the bass drum. If you play the drums instead of beating them, thin heads work just fine. However, the coated emperor sounded really bad to me. If you go back and listen you can hear the pitch bend from the drum after each stroke. The emperor really made that snare sound bad. This video made me realize that I don't think I like metal snares very much. They seem to ring too much for my taste.

After playing for decades on various heads.
I find that the calfskin unique and with a rich deep texture. I do play a Ludwig supraphonic. Amongst other drums, it would be an honor to have this. In my arsenal, thank you for all you do for the drum community

Remo emperor vintage coated. Sounds controlled but not muffled. Would love to hear it on my gretsch maple wood snare.
I'd be interested to know how they feel to you playing them.

Thanks for this demo...🎉 it was great. Love your dad and everyone 🥁. That being said, thanks for enlightening me on Australia drumhead Co. Never heard of them but when I heard it , my ears said.... ohh my.!!!!!.😮... how amazing it would be on 8 lug 6.5 x14 black beauty. Also I never heard aquarian drumheads😂 and love the aquarian vintage for sonor kompressor steel snare drum . The two heads I mentioned just seems as though they give new life or maybe that feeling of putting on a new suit on the snares that really feels good and you know you drums wear them well.😊 hope I am fortunate to win the drum heads , but if I don't I still came out winning because you introduced me to new drum companies and sounding snare heads, thanks !!!!

What a great video! Thanks so much-it would cost a small fortune to try all these out in person.
    My picks:
    1. Austrian Drumhead Co. Genuine Calfskin (Medium): gimme that calfskin! nothing like it!
    2. Evans Calftone '56: close!
    3. Aquarian Modern Vintage (Thin): hard to choose between this and the Evans.
