"Fortress Maximus is unable to enlarge because he used up all of his powers to operate on Spock." - Fortress Maximus, prepare for your death today, you're gonna die!
One of my favourite things about being in the UK is that I was able to get my hands on the dvd box set for this, and it’s been amazing There’s of course all the infamous lines everyone knows, but it’s been fun seeing the ones nobody ever talks about that are just as good - my personal favourite being an interaction between Chromedome and Weirdwolf in which Weirdwolf shoots a guy dead, Chromedome says “darn you” in a mildly annoyed tone, and in response Weirdwolf yells the most guttural “I’LL SEND YOU TO HELLLLL” in the entire dub
"Fortress Maximus has come himself." Also, I've heard the Animax dub of Cardcaptor Sakura since it was on Netflix. One episode of it had Sakura humming the theme from The Addams Family, I kid you not. Also, it's not New Soundblaster, but New Soundwave.
Despite all of the mistakes and poorly translated scripts, the Omni dub of Headmasters is somehow the only official English translation of the show to acknowledge Fortress's plan to rebuild Mars. I wish you acknowledged this because it's one of the few times Omni got something right.
I was once part of a failed fan redub of headmasters that never came to light. I'm still sad my skullcruncher and weirdwolf recordings are lost. Lol it couldn't have been this bad. (My weirdwolf was a baaaad Skeletor impression)
@vxrdrummer no. They were lost to a drive failure. This was in the days before cloud storage. I don't even remember the names of the folks I worked with. This was *very* amateur. Lol
That is pretty easy Optimus in Japanese is just Convoy no prefix so those who know nothing about the characters just took Rodimus Convoy literally as Rodimus Optimus Prime (Convoy) Convoy was seen as both parts of the name not just Prime as seen with the recent Star Convoy set being Star Optimus Prime not just Star Prime (if Beast Wars 2 or Neo were dubbed imagine Big Optimus Prime)
Omni did a lot of the Showa era Godzilla dubs, but not ALL of them. You can tell if it's an Omni dub if you hear characters refer to the titular monster as "Godziller". The first few Godzilla movies were localized using Hollywood actors doing the dubbing. New scenes with Raymond Burr was actually spliced into the original Godzilla movie for its localization, and a few after that were dubbed with actors you may have actually heard of, like George Takei. Hal Linden (Barney Miller) got his first acting job dubbing a Godzilla movie. A few of these Omni dub episodes were released as bonus features on some of the G1 DVD sets. I think the Rhino DVDs might've had some, and I think a UK DVD set had them as well. Another weird thing I remember is how they pronounced "headquarters" strangely, as "headQUARTERS". For anyone that hasn't seen the Omni dubs, they are horrid, worse than you might think based on how they are described in this video. They are funny for a few minutes, but that wears off quickly and you will not want to watch more than one or two of the episodes this way.
So you're telling me that Transformers has it's own "Big Green" Dub. Context: the Big Green dub is an old so bad it's hilarious dub of Dragon Ball Z (and some of the movies) where they called Piccolo "Big Green", they also did stuff like every attack was either called Kamehameha or "magic beam". At one point Goku shouts Kamehameha to power on his Kaioken, it's stupid. Seriously look it up, it's hilarious how bad that dub is.
"Galvatron has reused some of Soundwave's parts, along with some other new parts, and has reconstructed another Soundwave, and renamed him New Soundwave."
The horrible attempt of making the English dub of the Headmasters series, which feels like they were being serious but it ends up being a similar format to the Ghost Stories dub. At least with the Ghost Stories dub was just "Let's do whatever the hell we want and see what happens", the dubbing team behind Onmi thought "This will be a serious attempt of dubbing the Headmasters, but our studio sucks".
Angry Birds Transformers can come back in studio series as a core class adjacent line since Sega bought Rovio who did a collab with transformers. Now that sonic and tails transformers exist that could to bring those designs back as a proper. I know a lot of people don't like those designs but I do.
Anyone else double check the upload date at the start? As an Australian we know how to say Cybertron, we don't claim those ones who say Cyberton. I didn't even know Kamen Rider had dubs.
I can't believe that there was a compilation DVD of the Omni Dub sold at Toys 'R Us in the UK. I bought it because Star Sabre was on the cover, and at the time I didn't know who Star Sabre was yet. Which was weird that it was all Headmaster Dub Episodes so Star Sabre wasn't in any of the episodes on the DVD. Except the Intro, which was the Victory Intro for some reason. I'll give it credit that it did get me interested in the Japanese G1 Transformer series.
Reminds me. I still find it funny that the western comics had Galvatron be left buried in ice like what happened in Headmasters. AND he emerged from the ice during Regeneration One.
19:40 I mean, let's not understate this. The Masterforce dub has an honest to goodness f bomb in one episode. No way Hasbro would let that by if they noticed it. Slight correction though, Japanese doesn't have bad words like English does. Take the word kuso. You could translate that as poop, crap, damn or shit depending on tone or context.
All 3 Omni Dub seasons are on UA-cam. There are also DVD collections with them on. I got a Malaysian boxset that had all 3 on, and the original official UK release of the Headmasters also had the Headmasters Omni Dub on it. For some reason, they didn't include the Omni dubs on the other two boxsets of SGMF and Victory.
I actually own the first few episodes of the Headmasters Omni Dub on DVD. I don't remember where I got it from, but it was almost certainly second hand from somewhere like Poundland or something. I recall an early UK anime channel airing Transformers Headmasters and Victory, and I *think* they used the Omni Dub, but I don't remember exactly. I've kept it all these years simply because it's so hilariously bad. Because it could technically be considered lost media, and thus worth something. But then again, I got it from Poundland for dirt cheap and because it's so terrible, I doubt I'd make a profit on it anyway. All the same, it's amazing to finally fill in the blanks at the sheer WTF levels of terrible dubbing for an era of transformers that would've otherwise been before my time (I grew up with Beast Wars).
Irish here, I have a very vibrant memory of the headmaster intro episodes on a dvd with both the Japanese and English dubs. It was definitely not a chain store we got it from because it was just a normal dvd case with an a4 printed page badly folded into the cover
I laughed out loud when you said that the Matrix of Leadership and Energon cubes are both called power packs *That's not gonna be confusing AT ALL lmao*
While it was obvious they were never going to include the full Omni dubs in the Shout Factory DVD releases, I would have at least liked to see a bonus feature acknowledging their existence and showcasing some of the silliest moments
A thing you forgot to mention the the headmasters and victory dubs where released in Australia and new Zealand by the anime destination company madman. Back in the late 2000s all 3 japanese g1 series where released on DVD and madman managed to get there hands on at least 2 of the dubs. Master force at the time was lost and only 4 episodes could be recovered by them. There's even booklets included with the DVDs that give you a name guide. The DVDs are actually amazing releases since they also included scans of all the japanese transformers manga series as well as the zone ova and the magazine story's for zone Battlestar and operation combination.
Oh... Speaking of Kamen Rider, Omni is no GMA or ABS-CBN. Heck, there's even Kamen Rider Kabuto, if anyone tuned in to Cartoon Network back in 2007. The Filipino dubs are million times better because our voice actors were great for dubbing many iconic anime. Even recently, we have Kamen Rider Saber. Oh yeah, the one with a half-Filipina actress.
And this is why the stigma still exists that a foreign English dub *has* to be American to be proper and canon. Southasian English dubs from Hong Kong, Philippines, and Singapore could be perfectly acceptable to their market and culture and accents, and more options for quality dubbing should encourage growth and competition, but the West is supreme. But the drawback of American dubs is the localization rewriting and watering down culture for American culture.
You do realize that this isn’t proper English, like at all, it doesn’t matter which of the 3 major forms you go off of. Words should be changed to match language, languages don’t perfectly match up. Yes it’s fine for Southeast Asia but to be seen as ‘proper’ to the main English speaking world is like saying that Taco Bell is authentic Mexican food
I got a tape back in the day that was a mix of untranslated Headmaster episodes and the Omni dub (I never knew their name, it was referred to as the Star TV dub if memory serves plus one or two others) and they hilarious. Soundwave was just New Soundwave when he was rebuilt.
Surprised you didnt mention Philippines among the Asian countries that have English as an official language, TFs was big there late 80s, from what i can remember they were still selling older toys in 87 when i was there.
If we ever get redubs of the three anime shows, we'd hear the original names for some of them, and the toy names for those we have seen in America (except perhaps all the Masterforce/Chokon Power users). They should do an official redub to rebound on the Age of the Primes hype.
Man! I saw Head Masters, and the other 2 with this dub. But I also saw it in Spanish... The Spanish dub is a translation from the Omni Dub, sometimes they tried to fix what Omni did and came out even worse! 😂
Phillip will always be the real name of Autobot City. That said, everyone is too harsh on their dubs. Yes, we've all heard better, but be honest, we've heard a lot worse anime dubs...
I must have been too young to realize just how bad the dubbed Transformers anime were because they were a big part of my childhood especially when I was born in the tail-end of Generation 1. It was because of these anime that one of my favorite Autobots is Star Saber and what made me love the concept of Headmasters and Pretenders.
What is stopping them from redubbing these series? There has to be enough interest by now. I know we can't have some of the original voice actors but somebody who knows the property.
I bought a VHS bootleg of the Omni Headmasters Dub years ago on Ebay. I could not finish watching it. Oh God those Heisei Godzilla dubs were terrible. Now this explains it. To this day. I can't do Dubs any more with Japanese series. I have to do Subs. And yes Dragonball the Magic Begins is a real thing. I found it and bought the DVD years ago at Sam Goody. It's terrible. Crappy dubbing making 4kids One Piece look like a great dub
Random interjections of Shadow The Hedgehog level swearing
"Fortress Maximus has come himself."
Also, I've heard the Animax dub of Cardcaptor Sakura since it was on Netflix. One episode of it had Sakura humming the theme from The Addams Family, I kid you not.

Cardcaptor Sakura's Animax dub is also on NIS America's DVD and Blu-Ray release, since it's the only available English dub unedited and uncensored.

My favorite part is when Galvatron said "I AM the fucking strong!" And then he Galvatrons all over the place.
