Hi there Steve , Well last eve I built that press and also got my old 20 ton bottle jack , The last part I did was to weld plate on that Jack. This is going to work out fine going to build my barn truss with them Truss plates this spring down there in Alford, Fla. For now it will work fine to crush my Beer cans, Just a little over kill but what the hell. Thanks for this video..
It's heavy but portable yes. The workshop I built is long since done but that little press is still around being useful pressing sheet metal forms. I agree with welding the bottom plate, I tried but broke the welds pretty quickly. I'm also not an accomplished welder ;-)
Yes, I set mine up originally for 6 bolts but only ended up using two on the top and two on the bottom. In the end I didn't even end up tightening them down hard, the grade 8 studs held up nicely. I possibly could have figured out how to make it in a "C" shape like I've since seen some folks do but I was in a hurry and just wanted something that worked. I haven't needed to make any more trusses since then but might be building another shop next summer so I'll have a chance to revisit it. In the meantime it makes a great sheet metal press :-)
I like your setup but there is 1 problem. Because you have it enclosed that after you are done with putting the plates on, you either have to unbolt one side or you have to pull the whole board back threw to get it out. I would suggest using either 3/4 to 1" plates welded in a c shape. Also, I found that Home Depot has the plates cheaper than the guy you have the link to.

How do you get the truss out of your rig? Do you have to unbolt it?
