- Since I had S-VHS and VCR’s on the brain already (moreso than usual), it seemed like the right time to revisit one of the early, ultra-wonky Ben’s Junk topics.

This is the best VCR among the VCR's that made in the later years of VCR making by JVC, Yes brake pads and Dynamic drum will be a problem sooner or later.
Some notes from my experience with my HR-S3500U, which I managed to kill while disassembling for cleaning:
S-VHS ET recordings require SQPB to be played back in a standard VHS VCR.
I found the video stabilizer to be of limited benefit. I think I used it to transfer three tapes. Passing it through my busted JVC DR-MV1 as a poor man's TBC cleaned up the recordings much better.
The remotes are necessary to set timer recordings because the timer is controlled with a dedicated button on the remote. The couple times I used it for timer recording, I used my VCR Co-Pilot, which I also killed while disassembling to reglue plastic pieces.
The jog wheel is quite useful to recover the odd blip at the beginning of a tape, though it may take a few tries to avoid hitting the very beginning and thus causing the tape to stop.
We had Philips clones of these machines over here in Europe. VR1000/ 1100/ 1200/ 1500 etc etc. I recall the remote's were backlit for some of the key functions.
if you look at the vents in that VCR in the intro, it is pretty obvious how much better SVHS/ET is compared to standard VHS.
A couple things to note:
S-VHS ET recordings where not playable in “normal” VHS VCRs. The results were very similar to what happens when you attempt to play an S-VHS recording in a VHS VCR.
Also, at least on all of my S-VHS ET models (two JVC models as well as a Mitsubishi u-795), S-VHS ET mode is automatically switched off if you record on a real S-VHS tape.
@Billy William yes
@Billy William
D9 will only work in D9 decks. S-VHS recordings won’t play in normal VHS decks, unless they have “Quasi” S-VHS playback which allows the playback of S-VHS but at VHS quality. If they have it, it’s listed as a feature.
You can however make a normal VHS recoding on a S-VHS tape, but there’s usually no point in doing this.
S-VHS decks will record and play back both S-VHS and VHS.
@Billy William
The BR-D51U is a D9 deck, capable of also playing S-VHS recordings.
D9 is a digital format, marketed towards the professional broadcast industry. D9 recordings won’t play in S-VHS decks, just like S-VHS recordings won’t play in regular VHS decks.
@Billy William different circuitry required. Same reason why a Betamax VCR can’t play Betacam and vice versa.
I had either this model or something similar. In the early 2000s I had a jvc svhs deck with a tbc. I bought it due to the tbc as I was converting tapes to DVD. I never really found the tbc to help my old tapes much. I honestly had the best results using a mids 80s deck.
We had the av compulink back in the early '90s. if you put a movie in, everything would turn on and goto the proper inputs automatically. Just like HDMI does today.
Very cool to see a video on this JVC. I do have the HR-S7600U here right next to me. Bought it at Good Guys in the early 2000s. I have several high end S-VHS decks, a HR-S9600U, Panasonic AG1980, Sony SVO-5800, SVP 5600, and my pride and joy SONY SLV-R5UC bought new in '92. The TBCs are solid on these JVCs. I might still have a Panasonic AG-550 in storage as well. Thx for the video.
My VCR for a decade has been a Marantz SVHS deck that’s definitely a relative of a JVC machine, a lot of familiar stuff here. Looks and sounds great and has never done anything weird on me
Great...now I feel like digging up a VHS copy of Scrooged to watch. Thanks Ben
I got two of these now from thrift store finds. The blacks are nice and dark.
Did you sell any?..was wondering how much you got for them if you did .
@@jpluera nope, using both. They go for quite a bit on ebay though
@@luceholiday2010 Lol thats why i was asking..just got my hands on one and was wondering what the going price was lol ..I checked and it will be a pretty good return . ;)
You can override the Autotracking by pushing the up or down channel buttons.
That HI-FI crackle brings back memories - My first HI-FI deck had the same problem. Sometimes tracking helped, sometimes not. My second deck worked fine (and supported TV stereo/sap).
did you try to clean the mode switch on this vcr .that might have something to do with the tape problems.
COOL S-VHS DECK KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK I LOVE IT I TYPE IN ALL CAPS BECAUSE OF MY BAD EYESIGHT
VCR are great. 😀👍📼
The Rockford Files. !
I've got the HR-7600 (Pal, Champagne Colored) and the same remote, but it has aslighty other Modell Number - LP20878-002
I did pay 200€ (complette refurbished, very sturdy packaging, 2 years warranty) last year, and i think the remote (yes it's very crapy) is the original.
I got this same model for like $5 at a Salvation Army store. Ended up having to re-donate it after I no longer had any use for it.
Very intersting as usual. It's too bad (for me) that no attention at all is given to movie advance and commercial advance, two technologies that jvc thought good and interesting enough to license and include in their VCRs. Maybe it wil be a 10 seconds addendum on twitter?
I think that might hinge on the original remote (which I don’t have). Never had any luck with it myself. I had it on another VCR at one point-seems like (if memory serves) it would just jump ahead a minute-and-a-half.
Thanks good video suscrito
Where is the head phone jack? Where are there adjustable audio meters? Those things come even on the cheapest audio cassette decks.
I THOUGHT VCRS WERE DEAD. I WAS WRONG.
I'm selling one of these on Ebay ! Just inherited it from my Uncles estate....super nice shape with manual and remote!!!!
So it no longer reels out the tape if left in too long scaring me cause I wanted to get 1 at Ebay
Vhs tapes don't stop playing at all everything proven vhs tapes don't lock up at all like internet does
This is alot like my Panasonic AG-3200 with a few differences. (Smaller Jog Wheel).
I still have a working JVC HR-S4800U S-VHS deck. And I once had a Teac A-3300SX reel-to-reel deck like the one in the background.
I recorded this ATSC-to-NTSC broadcast on the HR-S4800U S-VHS deck back in 2017. ua-cam.com/video/GQ7xanTvgVE/v-deo.html
Hell yeah, Everything Is Terrible nod with the Jerry Maguire tapes.
I have a ton of vcr's, none of them work..someone should invent rubber that never deteriorates with the passages of time..
First!Love your work!
