Ben is the Bob Ross of VCR cleaning.
People used to pay me to do this.
That's how old I am now...
i was working in a shop dedicated to vcr repair. 7 technicians (plus some admin/logistics) working full time on VCRs brought in from small dealers who gave up on their customer's machines (or needed in warranty repairs which we were authorized to invoice to the big brands like panasonic, jvc, philips, sony etc)
Damn you are old! ;)
@@robertogarcia8717 Ouch...
I used to use a fascities house / hire company in the 90s to hire s-vhs & betacam camcorders & they showed me how they cleaned heads by wiping unleaded petrol ( gas) (I kid you not) across the heads with their fingers. I stopped using them for hiring gear right after seeing that.
A very educational video on VCR maintenance & not at all boring.
Thanks, Benny! 😁
When I worked in radio, each studio had a bottle of methyl hydrate (with long swabs) for the cart and reel decks. You have to clean more often with it than alcohol, but it kept the heads pristine.
Maybe Mr. Plinkett should just go to you. Then he'd be watching his Night Court VHS Tapes just like that.
Darn, you beat me to a Lightning Fast VCR Repair joke :/
@@whiterottenrabbit I guess you can say I was Lightning Fast.
7:25 Well darn I was gonna go get some cores light to clean my VCR!🤣
I loved your episodes on PSAs. If you ever go for a three-peat on PSAs, might I suggest going a bit deeper in PSAs? Been a fan since 10k subs
Ben, a big thank you for this video!! I'm currently cleaning my Panasonic PV-9450, had it since Christmas of '99 and never did more than the occasional cleaning tapes. Amazing all the crap that's coming off on the swabs.
Might want to consider stripping the chamois off of the angled stick and use the microfiber wrap technique on there instead of the Q-tips as the angle seems to give you an advantage. Also, don't worry if your "little tool" has a bend like that. I've been told it's normal by a professional.
honestly it can help get the job done better when used correctly 😆
Very useful insights into cleaning.
If you can clean a VCR in such an expert/professional manner, you have far more technical skills than this guy! LOL
Is 99% Isopropyl Alcohol difficult to get in the states? Because here in Canada pretty much every single store sells it right next to the 70% stuff with no purchase requirements.
I never realized that getting anything above 70% Isopropyl Alcohol is hard since I never really notice because even 50% Isopropyl still works well for me. I guess it is harder to get here in the states lol
Hey I notice you have the same LG TV my parents have!
I had a VCR repair shop. I think you're more likely to screw up a video head with that bundle of qtips. I would much rather use my fingertip and your little lens cleaning cloth square. Applying only very mild pressure, you can feel the head under your finger as you move the drum in one direction under it. Also, you left out the VERY important part of never moving the cleaning implement vertically because those heads will snap right off.
I mentioned in the video to let the alcohol do the work, not the stick.
Also, even if I failed to mention it (I'd have to watch again), any motions I made on the head assembly (all on the stationary parts) were horizontal, not vertical.
Deadly Prey! On VHS. I can see that.
20:38 - I thought "Stereocast" was a Sanyo thing. It appeared on their radio sets and clock radios. I wonder if Sony bought the term, given that Sanyo were also manufacturers of Betamax VCR's?
Everclear for the win! 👍🏾😁
Jokes on you Ben, I don't need this video to screw up my VCR. Been there, done that.
RIP JVC HR-S3500U, 1998-2020
Great video you no you can bay vcrs plus cleaning tapes plus vcr belts and vhs movies offline they are all there
I kinda feel like a scrub just using a t shirt (not even clean, just like off me when I do it) to clean my vcrs head.
I did it all bassakwerds but it worked fine after.
Man. I haven't had a VCR in years since my last one died forever ago. Nor would I have the patience to clean or restore one. I have all these old VHS that have piled up over the years and I don't know if I have the will to get rid of any of them.
VHS clean tapes are online day specially I just got 1 for 10 dollars off ebay or Amazon plus walmart website there all there online
Tampons. Seriously. I've never come across something better than tampons with isopropyl alcohol for cleaning VCR heads. Almost as good as those increadibly expensive VCR cleaning pads that looks like chamois leather or something. Also, even the very low budget tampons are good enougth.
I mean it's just a hunk of absorbent cotton or cotton like synthetic fibers.
@@larrylaffer3246 Yea, but the way its compacted makes it great. :)
** RAIDS HER DRAWER FOR SOME TAMMIES **
Specially vcrs vhs cleaning tapes vhs movies and vcrs belts they are living online now days specially I still bay them myself and they are not hard fine offline
VHS tapes never locks up plus its proven when they break they are fixable with scotch tape I had fix some my vhs tapes with scotch tape before they start working with out no problem Specially I had seen vhs tapes still greater then my blue Ray's specially blue Ray's lock up scratch plus I still record with vhs tapes every day specially recording movies from Netflix UA-cam. Putting all that on my vhs tapes specially they are updated
Ugh, Ben... just SEEING that Everclear made me nauseous. 🤢
That should be "Microfibre" not "Microfiber"! You Americans desperately need spelling lessons! You really should be hiring English, Australian or New Zealander teachers for your schools' English Departments. At the very least, they'll come equipped with Oxford and/or MacQuarie English Dictionaries, not that Websters rubbish.
