When I listened though it all made sense. I don't know if it's why they released it early but so much of the content seemed to be talking about the riots that where happening right there and then they would have been crazy to hold onto it for even a few days longer!
El-Ps history with Company Flow and its legacy to underground rap is amazing too. Massive shoutout to Myke C-Town for putting me on all those years back 🥺

I never listened to run the jewels but people talk about it as this legendary hip-hop duo, that being said I thought they would have released wayyyyy earlier then 2013 I've never heard of anything being that young in hip-hop yet still that highly regarded
Individually they've both been rapping and/or producing since the 90's so they were already respected before they teamed up. So while RTJ is massively respected it didn't come from nowhere in 2013.

I saw El-P say this in an interview somewhere so there might be a deeper reason behind it. Looking forward to more RTJ reactions🤌
Genuinely excited to see you do their first three albums. Every time I listen back to all of their albums, I shift constantly which is my favourite. I’d highly recommend seeing them live too…
@@kazzy1834 he probably has because he recognized zack's voice, but neither of them seemed to recognize his name so maybe theyre not super familiar with their work
This album got me through 2020 for real! When RTJ first hit it was such a throwback, since I was listening to El-P and Killer Mike individually back in the '90s/early 2000s!
Years on and everything about Walking in the Snow still gives me goosebumps. RTJ is the perfect fit for Kevin and this channel, absolutely need to go through the first 3 albums and Michael by KM
Its insane that RTJ haven't got a grammy yet. Killer Mike got it with Micheal and it hurts a a bit that EL-P doesn't have one yet. He deserve it. Great video guys!
Gotta do RTJ3 as well man. Second best concert I've ever been to(behind Outkast) was Run the Jewels at Loufest here in St Louis and they opened with Talk To Me....theres a part early in the song where the beat drops and the energy from that drop never ceased for the rest of the hour or so long show. Their music has a special energy to it.
great video guys. be sure to show him the first three albums and potentially RAP music by killer mike that was produced by elp prior to RTJ. lotta goodies there!!
RTJ 1-4 are legendary albums . RTJ 3 was my intro to them and I had to go back and listen to the other ones and they’re all just as good. RTJ 3 holds a special place in my heart though.
The "And you so numb you watch the cops choke out a man like me/And 'til my voice goes from a shriek to whisper, 'I can't breathe.'" bar is in reference to Eric Garner who was killed in police custody for selling loose cigarettes; he too was placed in a chokehold and was recorded saying, "I can't breathe," back in 2014.
Run The Jewels is amazing. I played Cyberpunk 2077 in Covid-time and RTJ made a soundtrack for it. And because I liked that song so much, I dived into the other songs and albums. They're just so frickin' good
El-P been killing it for years. Company Flow in the 90s, but his second solo album I'll Sleep When You're Dead has features from Mars Volta, Cat Power, and Trent Reznor....and guest rappers as well
There will be a lot of Run the Jewels recs which are deserved... but I'lll Sleep When Youre Dead by El P and The Cold Vein by Cannibal Ox (produced by El P) are both sleeper hits, especially Cold Vein which is an underground classic
RIP Lola/Gangsta Boo. Gone way too soon. One of my first IG posts was a video of RTJ performing RTJ 2 in Memphis at Minglewood, and she came out to do Love Again, commented on my post after the show. 10 years ago. It's legitimately hard to listen to Walking In the Snow now, but I'm so thankful she got to be part of that before she passed. Love Again is entertaining for sure, but Walking In the Snow meant something. Also, Mr Muthafuckin Exquire has some pretty good solo music.
I've seen RDJ twice now, once at The Game Awards, and the second time during their own show. Last year they did a 10 year anniversary show where they did 4 nights at the Hollywood Palladium (HORRIBLE VENUE!!) and each night they performed one album from start to finish along with some crowd favorites. I got to go for the final night and saw them perform this whole album. It was incredible and the energy in the room was beyond electric! Tenacious D opened for them with a DJ set (wish they actually performed though).
An album that really understood the heat of the confusion & chaotic nature of 2020. Run The Jewels are so good at giving self awareness in their music.
RTJ album rankings imo 1. 2 & 3 (tied) 2. 1 & 4 (tied) highly recommend doing all 4, starting at 1 and making your way back to 4, I think y'all would love all of them
I might be really slow, but i now just realized "yankee and the brave" refer to el-p being from new york (yankees) and killer mike being from atlanta (braves). it was right there all along
If you’re gonna do a Killer Mike solo album, PLEASE PLEASE do “R.A.P Music” instead; I like Micheal don’t get me wrong, but this one is infinitely better. It’s entirely produced by El-P, and is kind of what is responsible for the formation of RTJ in the first place.
I'm just at the start of the video and intend to watch it, but I remember when this album came out I thought it was the most well-timed, pointed album in my relatively short life time (I was like 26 at the time). I enjoy hip-hop a lot, but I'm a middle class white kid from Canada so as much I respect the genre, I can't relate to a lot of rap/hip-hop on the deepest levels, but I think just as a product of the time this album was very impactful to me.

I love that your dad recognized Zach's voice on "JU$T" but couldn't place it. Rage Against the Machine, baby!!
El-p is the New York hip-hop legend he's been doing it since the early 90s and his production has always been on Point like this
i wake up and thank god every day that The Cold Vein exists in the same time period as me. El-P production is unreal.
The "I can't breathe" in Walking in the Snow is in reference to Eric Garner who was also killed by police in a similar fashion to George Floyd and his last words were "I can't breathe", the song was written before George Floyd's death but they released the album literally right after.

@rayven2020 you're right, the riots and protests surrounding Floyd were the reason, I think they dropped it like 2 days early
One of the greatest hip hop albums of all time and it barely gets talked about, it’s a shame really.
Lack of pop
“Just gave you inspiration for free”
They released this album digitally for no charge, free download
Just like the previous three
"Vonnegut punch for your atlus shrugged" is such a outrageously strong line
Maybe my favorite bar ever
Had to pause the song and sit in silence for like 5 straight mins after hearing that the first time.
Killer Mikes verse on walking in the snow is still one of the best this decade, just absolutely incredible
“Around the age of 5 you’re shipped away for your body to be stored” his delivery on this shit was flawless🥶
"Never forget in the story of Jesus, the hero was killed by the state"
Didn't expect a RTJ reaction, but looking forward to this and hopefully they react to at least 2 and 3 too 🔥
