- I've been asked a few times by those of you watching what I think about "comedy bands". Bands that are by definition designed to be a comedy act. My favourite, of course, is Spinal Tap. They are without a doubt an incredible band, even though it's all an act. Let me explain why.
If you are against comedy and music coming together...well...I have a message for you.

Nigel's guitar is still sustaining to this day.
Don't even talk about it..just ..listen.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh
And many bites to eat were had.
shhh, don't even talk about it, never mind touching it !
Don't even look at it.
My only regret is that we never had the chance of hearing a finished "Lick my love pump" 😢

Spinal Tap is spectacular. They wrote and played their own instruments and the comedy is spot on for anyone who’s played in or been about of band and further more; If you don’t enjoy Tap, you’re simply put, a miserable person…
They even played tours and festivals.
@@ectoplasma5 They have played Knebworth at least once.
Also they are not just the 1984 movie. They released a great album in 1992, Break like the Wind. I can't even begin to imagine the shitstorm the song "Bitch School" would cause on social media if released today. What's wrong with being sexy?
"Stephan Tyler would kill for these lyrics." Is a great example of the brilliant throw away line in action.
Tyler was actually one of those who was OFFENDED by the movie back when it came out as he felt that it was making fun of bands like Aerosmith. No surprise as it's quite easy to see that Tyler takes himself wayyy too seriously.
@@nigeldaddyo wasnt he one of the biggest sex crazed coke fiends back then? :D
@@nigeldaddyo I never even thought of Tyler or Aerosmith when I saw this.
@@nigeldaddyo Joe Perry on the other hand found it absolutely hilarious! He felt called out by 'Big Bottom' due to 'Back in the Saddle' being played only on bass, as well as the rockstar antics he considered realistic to his experience in Aerosmith. The girlfriend-conflict also hit close to home apparently...
@@TempoDrift1480 Most people think of 80s Aerosmith, but a huge part of their career took place in the 70s. They had sexual lyrics similar to Spinal Tap a lot of the time actually in both periods.
Additionally, the whole 'band falling apart due to girlfriend issues' and 'losing popularity rapidly' situations were experienced by Aerosmith.
Joe Perry left the band after his toxic wife spilled milk, yes she literally spilled milk, on the other guitarists wife. After he left Aerosmith they weren't even able to fill small home shows in Boston venues. Steven Tyler was living off 10$ a day handed out my management trying to regulate his drug use while Perry descended into drugs fully, was dumped by his wife after he lost all his money, & had to sell his prized Les paul (which Slash bought btw and then gifted back many years later) just to eat.
They reunited thanks to Joe's new girlfriend Billy (who also got him clean) getting him to contact Tyler again which revitalized their careers completely in combination with bringing in new songwriting partners.
Pretty Spinal Tap, that :D
True story: Growing up, I thought "Gimme Some Money" was an actual 1960's song. It took 14 years to discover the brilliant truth.
Great tune
@@torspomedia5861 hahahah, that was so well done, it probably had a lot of people thinking the same.
There is a 60s soul song called "First I Look At The Purse" by The Contours, which was later covered by J. Geils Band in the 70s. I'd be amazed if GSM was not inspired by it.
There's always such great production quality in JH's videos
They must be recorded in Dobbly
you mean dolby ? hahaha
My band Shark Sandwich is celebrating its 32nd anniversary next month. The true genius of Spinal Tap is it's unerringly accurate portrayal of the misadventures of any band that has almost toured at any level. I lose count of the number of scenes that I have personally experienced during my long ago days touring in a rock and roll band. What is even more amazing is the scenes are as a general rule all improvised. Anything these guys do is worth watching. Bravo Justin for making a video on Spinal Tap.
Awesome, but why not "Shit Sandwich"?
Just a two word review: Shit Sandwich
Where did they print that? That’s not real, is it? 😂
@@toddlee7498 such a fine line between stupid and uh, clever

This Is Spinal Tap is my favourite movie of all time. Was lucky enough to see them play live at The Royal Albert Hall around 1990 ish when they promoted the album Break Like The Wind. A totally amazing and brilliant night. Musically original and completely hilarious and the observations of real bands are spot on. Tap Rules!!!! PS Loving the Hasselhoff T shirt Justin
I was in college when This Is Spinal Tap came out. My friends and I watched it on VHS more times than I could count. Then again, we were all musicians and it hit home.
One of my favorite movies, extremely fun and quotable. The best part is how convincing they are, whenever they tackle a sound they do a pretty solid job fitting in with the contemporaries, Ozzy even thought it was a real documentary when he first saw it lol
It wasn’t until some years later and being involved with some punk bands. I was carrying equipment. That I discovered Tap is frighteningly accurate.
Ozzy also thought the actor who portrayed him in “The Osbornes” was brilliant.
Ozzy, to be fair to him was out of his mind for four decades solid. And that is something even the great Spinal Tap couldn’t do 😆
True confession: I live for Justin's theme song. ❤🤣🎵
You could play it in a loop and live forever
same here.
"The review you had on Shark Sandwich, merely two words: Shit Sandwich" "Who wrote that? You can't print that!"

Wonderful comentary on the best film ever made. These guys are not only great actors and comedians but also talented musicians and songwriters and it all just work. You can enjoy those songs on a purely musical level unironically.
Spinal Tap II is in the works; I hope they don't screw it up. BTW, Jeff Beck claims he loved the movie and that he laughed so hard in the theater the first time he saw it others in the audience told him to be quiet. I still imagine Nigel Tufnel's voice whenever I read a Jeff Beck interview though.
I saw it for the first time in a movie theater the year it came out ( I was 20 years old). I confess during the course of the film that I began to wonder if it were real or not. That’s how good it was
I only knew for sure when I saw John Steed as their record label head
If an artist can't see themselves in this movie and laugh, I probably don't want to hear what they have to say.
On a related note, one of the things I've always loved about Justin & The Darkness is how humor can pervade their music without it ever being a joke or farce. That is true for this channel as well. The kind of giddy goofiness woven into everything from "Growing On Me" to "America" (a fave of mine) to the unhinged moments in the vocal delivery in "Do it in the Dark" just magnifies the impact in a good way. Thank you for making it a point to breathe such life into your work.
Their movies are the best! Geniuses of hilarity. Lines are easily applied in our daily life.
The early days of wireless mics are so relatable...picking up the planes convos.😄 Personal experience there.🤙🏼
The guitar scene is legendary, most people don’t know the amount of legends that couldn’t afford to buy it.
I knew you was going to say Big Bottom lol. I absolutely love the spinal tap film, there's so much funny stuff in that film would take me ages to go threw. But two highlights for me was the stone henge build that turned out the wrong size, and the bassist getting stuck in that egg thing. What a classic film..
I got to see Spinal Tap in concert and they are excellent musicians. At the show the Stone Hedge monument was so huge they couldn't get it down from the rafters 😂.
I have been recently enjoying your channel to help me through a rough patch, the vids are clever and make me laugh. Yesterday I watched a video with you and your brother and it was a REAL Spinal Tap moment. It was a Rig Rundown and Dan was showing his guitars off. He said you had gifted him a guitar named Doon but the interviewer thought he had said June. Chris (the interviewer) asked if it was named June because that's when he received the guitar and after a long pause Dan said it was named after the David Lynch classic film without correcting him. Chris said that's cool and then continued to call the guitar June. Clearly he was unfamiliar with the film. This accidental comedy would have fit nicely in the Rob Reiner classic film called Spinal Tap
Been on kind of a binge of your channel for the past two days (with sleep and food and work in between but ya know). Love it. All of it.
Often times I watch your videos and other often times I watch Spinal Tap. I often times enjoy them both
Spinal Tap taught me that d minor is the saddest key to play in with the melancholic ballad "Lick My Love Pump"
I had just gotten off a 3 month tour with a band and was living in a motel by myself for a couple of weeks, waiting to go out again. For me, the first night after a tour was always an emotional roller coaster between elation in having a much needed break, to restless loneliness from having the brakes slammed on, to feeling depressed and a bit useless and worn out from all the over indulgences.
I think this was around 1986, and I turned on the crappy TV and Spinal Tap was just starting. I really had no idea what I was watching at first, but it quickly took my mind off of the usual brain stew that happens during those times. What great timing and what a great film. I've watched it many times since. This is the best R&R movie ever made.
And this cast seems to get everything they do right. Best In Show is another classic, nailing the dog show world.
Justin, I just found your channel last week and can't get enough of it. You're taking me away from my work. Excellent!
This Is Spinal Tap is my all time favourite film.
Man, I'm glad you mentioned Mighty Wind! Love that movie.
We played Spinal Tap's "Sex Farm" at a local brewery gig (way too loud, as well), and the audience JUST DIDN'T GET IT~!!!!! It was epic. Talk about a crowd-killer!
Shame on them!!
That's hilarious. The more I think about it, the funnier it gets...
@@robnewnham2449 there was NO crowd participation for the chorus!!!!!
I would have bought you a round for playing that. We have experienced the same response with many of the songs on our set lists. Most people who want to hear Free Bird and Mustang Sally stand there slack jawed, but there is that ONE dude in the back yelling "FUCK YAHHHH! GREAT SONG! GREAT SONG!" Those are the people we play for.
I played Big Bottom acoustic at an open mic night in the middle of nowhere and it was equally well received...
For years I thought he said
"Big Dave is waiting inside my tights"
David St. Hubbins referencing his pink torpedo yet again
"Big Bottom" ... One of the greatest rock songs of all time !👍👍👍
I recall a Jeff Beck interview where he said he fell off the chair laughing when he first saw This is Spinal Tap
Thanks Justin - I had the volume turned all the way up to 11 😂
Thank You! Best one so far. By far!!💋🤟
Best Mockumentary of all time! Never gets old because it's all so spot on, down to the minutiae haha never gets old. I was once in a band with a keyboard player whose missus got up and declared this "immature, boring and pathetic" mid way through watching the movie. She didn't "get it" whatsoever (she assumed it was real) and needless to say their relationship (him on the henpecked end) was over shortly thereafter. An all time classic!
It was about 30 seconds in when I suddenly realised they were all just playing bass😂😂😂😂 It’s up there with the first Airplane film when the sound of the jet plane is overdubbed instead by the sounds of Ww2 Bombers. Genius!!!
Spinal Tap are amazing! Another great rock mockumentary was 'Bad News' which had the guys from 'The Young Ones' in it. It came out around the same time. Very funny!
🎵🎵 Once in every lifetime, comes a life like this, oh i need u, u need me...🎵🎵
Laaa ger...
I watched this when I was v young and thought it was a real documentary- still loved it! Since then have rewatched it far too many times, bought various albums AND went to see them at Wembley in the 90s - Rock Gods!! (with a very hefty sprinkling underplayed observational comedy) ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
I wish there was an “utterly adore” along w “like”.
The ad-libbed commentary on the DVD is also brilliant.
On july 1st, 1992, "Tap" did it's one day cross canada tour. It was paid for by Canada's Much Music ( canada's MTV) in honour of Canada's 125th birthday. They literally played extremely short sets at various cities in one day ( actually played on stage, this is pre interenet and no big screen). Epic tour.
Bonzo Dog Doo Dah band, Spinal Tap, Steel Panther, all 'comedy' bands, but all bloody great. I don't see the issue.
Also, 'what's wrong with being sexy?'
Haahaaa! Thank you so much, Justin. This is the most amazing film.
I have their album Back From The Dead. Highly recommended. The soundtrack omits a lot of songs from the film and for whatever reason the versions on the soundtrack aren't as good as the film versions. This is Spinal Tap is the greatest rock and roll movie ever made, I'd say. Wholeheartedly. I think many consider the competition to be A Hard Day's Night and The Last Waltz. Both those are great as they are but This is Spinal Tap wins out because it also happens to be in the top two funniest movies of all time, too. I thought one of Derek's bass necks has eight strings on it. Check the footage!
Thank You for acknowledging A Mighty Wind! I always saw The Folksmen as the unofficial alternative history of The Thamesmen… It’s what would have happened if Heavy Metal hadn't come along to turn them into Tap 😅👍
One of my favorite Folksmen lyrics is from "Never Did No Wanderin'" because it somehow feels like something Tap would write if they tried to do something folk-inspired - like it's supposed to sound cool and grandiose, and it kinda is, but at the same time it's comedic because it makes no sense when you actually put it all together:
"My mother was the cold north wind
My father was the son...
Of a railroad man from west of hell
Where the trains don't even run".
I LOVE Spinal Tap. There was a time in the late 80s, I had some friends that hatted Spinal Tap. It hit home very hard with them. Love your channel, you're very entertaining.
Where did your friends get Spinal Tap hats?
Loving this channel Justin! Found it a few weeks back. Become a firm favourite ❤
I'm not a huge primus fan but Les claypool's "electric apricot" is a hilarious take on the jam band scene.
Finally purchased spinal tap 3 days ago. Mime is money

"Primus Sucks!"🤣😉
fun fact: Nigel Tufnel can be seen playing lead guitar with Lenny and the Squigtones on American Bandstand five years before Spinal Tap came out.clips are on YT
That IS a fun fact! I’ll have to find it online👍
Slightly before Spinal Tap, The Comic Strip did a couple of films about their fictional heavy metal band Bad News and More Bad News.
I love how you recorded your video in front of your very own Stonehenge in tribute to ‘Tap
I laugh my ass off this whole entire video. Justin you’re fucking genius!
Often times I watch your channel, every times I enjoy. Thanks for providing such great interestings and intelligence sightings. You Tubes gold.
Bad News!!!
I came here to say this too!
Hey Hey Bad News!
I am really enjoying your site. Thank you Foo Fighters (Taylor Hawkins tribute) for introducing me to you. You are a performer! You are unique! On the down side. I'm still waiting for my shirts from the shows, I ordered on September 4th and still waiting! #merchbar is not very friendly. All the best my friend! Keep on rocking
Talk about mud flaps, my girls got em. Has cracked me up since I was 12
..... My dad was half owner of a blues bar when I was a kid. So there were many interesting experiences, my parents had bands over for dinner many times. And a couple always stood out. Baby Jason and the spankers... hilarious name, but all three of them guys could play any instrument in the band. Wich led to them rotating thru each other's instruments mid song. Always a killer show. We are about 15 minutes from Branson Missouri, so we had all sorts of bluegrass bands in as well( big smith was one of my favorites) so funny you mentioned a mighty wind, that one hit home big time concidering the area I grew up in.
The Jeff Beck comparison/dig is Nigel reading a Hot Rod magazine at the airport lounge..
Playing second on the bill to a puppet show at the end of the disastrous US tour always kills me
Seeing "Tap" in the early 90s has to be one of my top 5 concert going experiences! My only regret is buying my ex boyfriend a T-shirt and not getting one for myself!
I've watched this film about a hundred times and never noticed they were all playing the bass, amazing!
Thanks for doing this one!
Thanks Justin and the boys for the show at the Tivoli last night! Was wicked as! The Southern River Band rocks too 🤘
Saw you guys in Brisbane last night. I know the crowd energy was low but both bands were phenomenal.
I saw it in theaters as a teen metal fan and wasn't quite ready to appreciate the humor. Come to love the film and have quoted from it liberally for the last 35+ years
You must do ALL Spinal Tap songs! YOU MUST! This was of the finest quality!
Thank you, Justin! Increasingly more often as this movie ages, I find myself feeling as though I’m one of the few who recognizes the lyrical genius and is still amazed at how good all of their songs really are. I saw them play live in Cleveland in 1993. (They actually found the stage.) I have all three CD’s and the movie in various formats. I hear there’s going to be a sequel as well.
A rock musician friend of mine was on a plane going from Tokyo to New York and I was following his flight on the Flight aware website that shows the real time flight path (one of my odd quirks ;) ) because I needed to speak to him about something as soon as he landed. When the plane got near Cleveland it was diverted in a bunch of huge loops around and around for a while, so I took screenshots and sent them as a series titled Hello Cleveland as soon as he landed.. He got the reference/joke immediately and found it hilarious 😅
@@jamesnunn7181 Sorry. I should’ve clarified. I was referring to people ‘in my circle.’ 😎
Soundgarden played this live once upon a time. Simply amazing.

RIP Ric Parnell. Spinal Tap and Atomic Rooster drummer extraordinaire... Son of Jack Parnell.
My first instinct if I ever met Justin would be to sing the theme song? Poorly. I have a very low register. Lol Brilliant channel. It is a channel I regularly go to when you need calm and peace?
Same. Justin’s videos always pick me up. I’m lucky I found it just in the last few months from Pat Finnerty and damn I feel so lucky. I’m lucky to have lots of videos to watch still. So on extra crappy days what better cure than a little marathon? Even rewatching ones I’ve seen are still great. The Kings of Leon Sex on Fire video is one of my favourites. Just watching Justin watch their video is pure joy! See you on the ice🤗
When I was just a kid I thought they were a real band. I remember being sad when I didn’t find Shark Sandwich album in my local music shop.
I LOVE Spinal Tap - it's clever and so bloody funny - must watch it again now!! Thankyou x
Frankie Ballini said that he saw the movie in theaters with Herman Rarebell, and the Scorpians drummer got really pissed off.
Honestly, I fell in love with The Darkness because I love stuff like Spinal Tap, but also stuff like Queen.
Justin I just wanted to say thank you for introducing me king gizzard and the lizard wizard. Absolutely life changing
This was my favorite video from Justin. Three of my all-time favorite bands aren't real: Spinal Tap, The Blues Brothers and Sex Bob-omb.
This Is Spinal Tap is utterly brilliant on every level, perfectly observed and SO clever - I never fail to cry with laughter every time...🤣🎸
I was recently perusing Rob Reiner's IMDB page and was SO STOKED TO SEE THEY'RE MAKING A SPINAL TAP 2! It's still in pre-production. Justin, you should make a cameo appearance 💯💯💯💯💯
A little off topic. I was recently listening to The Darkness on spotify and am so in love with Heart Explodes. So so beautiful. Thank you. ❤ Your voice is magic.
Hello Justin ,
I saw you in Canberra Tuesday night and I’ve been happy ever since . It was so uplifting seeing a good time rock n roll band . You are obviously a great front man . I was reminded of a gig that I wasn’t intending to attend but got given a ticket and went along , David Lee Roth . You and he both possess a skill or an ability to make contact with people in a big crowd that feels personal. You and the lads were having a good time like Dave was and everybody at the gig was coming along for the ride myself included . Listening to the punters chatter outside at the end of the show it was all positive everyone was happy uplifted by the Darkness it was cool … thanks .
The white les Paul sound freakin hot it’s a beast .
Hopefully you a drank lots of fluids next day coz the sweat was dripping off you 🤘
Great video Justin. I need to watch the film again.
This maybe my favourite video on the internet ever. Finally. Sense.
Would love you to do an depth vid on Steel Panther... full discloser, I love them almost as much as the Darkness! lol :)
The only lyric that tops this is motorhead's "if you squeeze my lizard, I'll put my snake on you"
When I was a teen, the story my mates and I used to believe regarding the Spinal Tap movie was that it was Iron Maiden that walked out due to them thinking it was a spoof of them.
Love the fact that the BBC iPlayer volume control goes to 11 in reference. Hats off to the BBC’s sense of humour for that.
yes! I was hoping that was going to be the song.
It was hilarious when it pans around and you notice they are all playing bass.
When he plays the beautiful piano intro and says the title of the song, it’s classic.
And let us not forget about that brilliant home-grown musical, "Waiting for Guffman," featuring the innovative show tunes and stellar dance moves (and hair style) of Corky St. Clair!
Agreed sir, it really is genius, wish that the tap could perform at an Olympics opening ceremony, subbed because of this video
Spinal tap is life, it never ever gets old. Too many awesome things about it to even mention
I always thought more minds have been changed through camp and irony than through outright serious pretension. That is Rock andRoll.
totally agree!
Dave Mustaine said, " The longer you've been in this business, the less funny that movie gets." That alone is a great quote and sums it up quite nicely. I seem to remember seeing Ritchie Blackmore commenting about how Chris Guest used to move his mouth while playing solos was based on him. Whjat's intreaging to me is that the actors actually played their own instruments and sang in that movie.
Spinal Tap was such a good movie. I especially find it funny when someone thinks it's real 😂. A band I was in used to do the Deep Purple song "My Woman From Tokyo" and I had the idea to use the bridge of Spinal Tap's "Rock and Roll Creation" in place of Tokyo's bridge... it fit so perfectly. So funny and I don't think the majority of the audience even noticed 🤣.
the best never aging band bus entertainement of all times all over the world I mean it
I (and my high-school friends from the 80s) have been vivisecting this movie for 40 years, and that's the closest to a consensually hilarious UA-cam verdict as any of us feeble elders will ever manage. Cheers. Let's jam sometime (hardy har...)
