There was an awesome trilogy of Forgotten Realms novels about a rogue (assassin) who got hand picked by Mask (God of thieves) and he multiclassed to cleric to act on Mask's behalf. (He might have even eventually become a Chosen of Mask)

Agreed. I think the dudes slept a bit on the utility that cunning action can give a cleric. I also think Soulknife works a bit better than they gave it credit for, because their Psi Bolstered Knack is just so incredibly useful. And sneak attack may not be as immediately impressive as Extra Attack for a more melee focused cleric, but it’s certainly no slouch and puts less of a hold on your cleric progression than five levels of fighter.

When you look at druids with their wildshape, you forget about circles of spore, wildfire, stars, that don't have to change into animal to be awesome and retain casting ability while using druid resource.
Life domain cleric + 2 lvl star circle druid. Unbreakable concentration by lvl 2-4, and ability to patch up holes the size of an apple in your barbarian's body with 1 goodberry from cleric feature or with 1 cast via star-form of the chalice. Trust me it's amazing combo, best heal one can dish out on low-to-medium lvls.

    • @toddhadley9002
      @toddhadley9002 Рік тому +32

I think stars druid is easily one of the best cleric multiclass combos in the game. It seems almost designed as a dip from Cleric. As you said, Chalice synergizes well with Cleric healing. It's almost like twinning a healing spell, except it doesn't require metamagic. Paired with Life domain, it means you can heal at a distance without even having to prepare any healing spells. Cure Wounds is always prepared for Life domain, so you can just cast it on yourself if no one else is within reach (and take a little extra healing from Disciple of Life), then use the chalice ability to heal someone else up to 30 feet away.
Alternately, use Archer form for a spiritual-weapon-like ability, and save yourself a prepared spell, as well as any spell slots you would have spent on spiritual weapon. It recharges on a short rest!
Or if you really want to keep your concentration up on a spell, you can go Dragon form instead. You can't roll lower than a 15 on concentration checks, which means you automatically succeed on the check when you take no more than 30 damage. Higher if you pick up Resilient - CON. This is great for a melee cleric build to help you keep your concentration on spirit guardians.
You also get Guiding Bolt always prepared, plus some free uses of it per day. One more prepared spell and some spell slots you save.
Finally, you get Guidance for free. If you were planning to take it anyway, that frees you up to take another cleric cantrip.
Stars druid gives clerics a lot of versatility in how they play, and the best part is that you don't have to decide at the moment you choose the subclass. You could switch between play styles each battle.

Not an awful lot perhaps, but that's a total amount of healing comparable to mass healing word which is a 3rd lvl spell!! Sounds worth it to me!

One thing I think you really missed with the Cleric/Druid is taking a dip into Stars Druid. Stars Druid gets you free guiding bolts, wildshape, absorb elements, and most importantly, the ability to have unbreakable concentration with the Dragon form. Since Clerics spend most of their time concentrating on spirit guardians. Going Cleric 8/Stars Druid 2 is an incredibly strong option.

The other thing you also get is a free familiar. With the new Tasha's rules you can use your wildshape to summon a familiar for up to an hour at lv2 twice per day.
You get the upside of infiltration with wildshape when you need it. Or a familiar to give advantage in combat.
The druid spells might not add alot but the 2 lv dip adds a lot of support and utility from the class features and the Stars or Shepard subclasses. I would argue it's at least a B if not an A. Low cost, high reward

C rating should not stand. Wildshaping utility is better than Monty was giving it credit, sounded like he forgot about it.
There are also quite a few cantrips and lower level Druid spells that are stand out features. The nature cleric doesn’t get access to those.
Also some rituals available that the cleric doesn’t have access to.
The summoning spells the Druid has access to can be upcast quite effectively. Conjure animals, summon beast, and summon fey.
That’s without taking into account circle features.

My girlfriend is currently playing a Twilight Cleric with two levels of Stars Druid and it works pretty well. Chalice helps with cleric healing, still have spiritual weapon, can take some of the more niche low level Cleric spells because most Druid support spells are on the Cleric list too. @@Hyde_Hill The Cleric-Druid MC hugely depends on your DM's ruling on that stupid armor restriction. I play with very tolerant DMs who allow Breastplates made from wood or bone, scale armour made from snake skin or crocodile hide just as it can be made from dragonscales. In which case the Cleric-Druid is really great, though you're only dipping 2 levels for some 1st level spells: Absorb Elements, Faerie Fire, Entangle, Healing Word, Speak with Animals, and your first subclass feature -> Starry druid is good, Shepherd is nice as well for aura healing, or Wildfire for group teleport ability. However I'm sure we'll see in the druid video druid with 2 levels of cleric is much better than the reverse.

Circle of Stars 2 level dip is fantastic for a healing cleric (twilight, life, etc). Cast Beacon of Hope and use Chalice Starry Form. Every healing word heals someone with a cure wounds as well. One thing about the Barb/Cleric is that a lot of the non-concentration spells like Death Ward, Aid, and even something like Warding bond all have very long durations. You don’t need to be casting them on turn after another because they’re meant to be used before getting into combat. You’ll most likely only lose one round of bonus actions by for spiritual weapon.
Plus, the subclasses grant the character features that do not require concentration that are still helpful for the barbarian. The forge, twilight, war, peace, light, and grave give the cleric access to some really great battlefield utility. Plus, some give you divine strike to aid you even further.

Same! I also am thinking of taking levels in ranger for gloomstalker, cause the twilight sanctuary creates dim light, and anything that can see you in that 30 ft radius must have dark vision, and as a gloomstalker you are invisible to anything that is using dark vision to see. Ergo as long as your sanctuary is up, either they can’t see you cause they don’t have dark vision and you are invisible to those that use dark vision. Meaning you are essentially invis as long as your sanctuary is up.

Excellent video as always! I do think you underrate the Druid dip a bit (I'd probably give it a B) for a couple key reasons. Firstly, even one level in Druid gives you five or six more spells prepared. Granted these need to be Druid spells, but as well as getting some quite strong Druid spells like Absorb Elements and Faerie Fire, this lets you prepare Healing Word, Detect Magic, Cure Wounds etc. as a Druid, freeing up your Cleric preparation for higher-level spells. Secondly, as @sleidman mentioned below, Stars Druid is *great* for a cleric; Starry Form gives you your choice of substantially boosted healing, auto-success on most concentration checks (removing the need to take Warcaster), or essentially free Spiritual Weapon, plus you get a bunch of free castings of Guiding Bolt. Additionally, with the new Tasha's rules you can use Wild Shape to cast Find Familiar, which adds a ton of utility in both exploration and combat.

Why druid and sorcerer are good dips for clerics.
Druid cleric is something I've played both ways. Star druid X + Arcana 1 to be a better blaster and Twilight X + Moon 2 (Arguably the cleric that benefit the most from not multiclassing).
Benefit of 1 level in druid and two levels in moon druid specifically.
1, Fk ton of prepared spells. There's a lot of overlap in the first level spells and preparing those as a druid can allow for more niche choices for the higher level cleric spells. Having something like dispel evil and good, freedom of movement, life transference, calm emotions, daylight, gentle repose, cleric ritual spells (all golden), speak with dead, borrowed knowledge etc when you had no reason to creates moments of excitement at the table comparable to a paladin crit smiting or a fighter killing a boss in one turn. Also you get stuff like absorb elements, entangle, ice knife etc.
2, 2 Levels in moon druid can make you exceptionally tanky as a bonus action (bear/rocktopus) and also exceptionally mobile (moorbounder). Putting Twilight on top makes it so much better as you can stack the HP and also turn the 70 ft movement speed a moorbounder has into a 70 ft fly speed. You can get spells to allies who are too far away by holding action to release the spell when you can put it on them and then wild shaping into something with better movement speed.
With sorcerors the answer is much simpler.
    1, shield and absorb elements.
2, metamagic (usually made better by taking the feat as well) subtle and extended for extended buffs unconterspellable healing spells when it matters and also extended Aura of Vitality (bonkers on a life cleric.)

I think there's something to be said for multiclassing a Cleric into the Stars Druid for 2 levels, as you can expend Wild Shape on Starry Form for 10 minutes for a number of good benefits. Chalice offers an extra 1d8+wis heal that can have its own target, which comes up every time you cast a healing spell. Archer gives a 1d8+wis bonus action radiant ranged attack every turn, perhaps as a decent spiritual weapon alternative in a pinch. And Dragon, you get a concentration check floor of 10 on the d20. (Also comes with free Guidance and some free Guiding Bolts uses.) Maybe not perfect for falling behind a spell level in progression, but perhaps good for certain builds!

My favorite build for Cleric/ Druid is a 50/50 split between tempest domain and circle of the land (mountain). You end up with more spells prepared than anyone, and if you need power, then just max out the damage on a lightning bolt or call lightning spell. Tempest domain clerics don't get access to a lot of good thunder/lightning spells for abusing their channel divinity. So this is only a boost for your cleric. Plus, since both classes give domain spells as well as extra spell prep with your high wisdom, you end up with a boatload of extra spells prepped in your late game. At level 20, you 48 spells prepared for levels 1-5.
For this build, you start with a level of each and then go for Cleric 2/ druid 1. Your build is officially online with extra spell versatility and the ability to amp up certain damages. Next, beeline for Cleric 3/ druid 2. At this point you have access to both domain lists and the ability to cast Shatter, which you can cast harder than a fireball of equivalent level. 3rd, beeline for Cleric 3/ druid 5, and now you're in your full swing with call lightning, lightning bolt, and shatter as the case requires, plus you have a potential 26 spells prepared, compared to the cleric's 21 at this point. Keep taking two levels at a time of either until you're the grumpy stormcloud/ swiss army knife of the party with cleric 10/druid 10. If you're worried about falling behind on damage, take two levels of fighter to action surge, and now you can out damage most casters using "lesser" spells. It's a fun build.

@@YoungTroy23 The initiative I will grant you. The flight would mainly be out of combat. But for the initiative the dip would be the other way around. So more a cleric dip with gloomstalker. 8 levels of cleric/5 gloomstalker is pretty end campaign for 1d8 on one attack. Plus you wouldn't channel divinity first turn, which is very strong part of of twilight cleric. I grant versatility however it is at the cost of overall power imho. 1 level dip on a gloomstalker seems stronger for armor and initiative advantage plus some utility spells. I would say they do interfere to a degree action economy wise though. Also feat selection if want to make the most of your gloomstalker.

@@Hyde_Hill flight in combat is incredibly potent since most non-humanoids do not have ranged attacks and it’s non-concentration. As for action economy it depends entirely on what spells you choose and how you choose to engage in combat. It’s not perfect but it’s way higher than D-tier since it’s essentially a ranger support options and reliable ways to deal with undead foes in mass and a very potent channel divinity.

So here's my pitch for the rogue/cleric hybrid: guidance and expertise combine like chocolate and peanut butter. Can you imagine a rogue that can cast enhance ability or pass without trace (from trickery domain)?
Or what about a grave domain/ assassin build? Use your channel divinity to double the damage on your next attack, and then get an automatic critical, which essentially means the equivalent of 4 attacks with sneak attack.
Try a knowledge domain/ scout combo with human variant prodigy, and grab 7 expertise by level 4. Give this guy a whip, a hand crossbow, and a fear of snakes, and you just made Indiana Jones!
A single level of rogue is enough to make any character into a reliable skill monkey backup. Rogues, barbarians, hexblades, and clerics are the single level dips that change everything.

CLERIC SORCERER WORKS AS LONG AS THE SORCERER SPELLS YOU TAKE DONT NEED A SAVE OR A ROLL, FOR EXAMPLE: SHIELD, ABSORB ELEMENTS, MIRROR IMAGE, HASTE, FLY, ETC AND YOU GET METAMAGIC, TWIN GUIDING BOLT OR DISTANT CURE WOUNDS, OR YOU COULD JUST GO TEMPEST CLERIC/STORM SORCERER

I really like the flavor of a Sea Elf (Pirate background btw), riding a Dark Blue dragon, wielding the power of the Seas below.

Great vid! Personally, I can't imagine playing a trickery cleric without a few levels of rogue or bard. And I'd imagine that most of the votes for druid were due to the goodberry/life domain combo.

A three level dip into Swarmkeeper ranger can give a cleric some excellent thematics for spirit guardians, and also the ability to make ranged attacks that force movement into your spirit guardians area, for extra damage on your turn as well as when they start their turn in the spirit guardians area.

I played a variant human with the healer feat, plate armor (which we were allowed to buy) and a 15 strength. I was a frontline breast and healed everyone like it was going out of style! I used Shield of Faith and a physical shield, too. I was able to zip around the battlefield smashing enemies with a mace and healing anyone who was in trouble. I loved the character!

I also feel that this circle can go well with other builds but it feel so good to imagine a special healer that combine star and divine magic. You can heal 2 caracther with a single healer word

For cleric/wizard, I played a war wizard who was then converted into a war cleric. Ended up with way more cleric levels. It happened for roleplay reasons, seeing a god actually smite someone in person, but it played well. Since you guys love wading into melee with spirit guardians, the +4 reaction to a saving throw to keep it, or just cast shield, was great. If you do a 5/5 split, the wizard gets you counterspell, which is just amazing to upcast with your higher spell slots. This combo really focuses on upcasting concentration spells and keeping them going.

Been midmaxing a tabaxi Twilight cleric who's taking 3 levels into glamour bard. I find it to actually be quite strong and it makes for a lot of fun roleplay. The inspiration die are great to pass a quick buff onto other players and it's added some excellent additions to my spell list. PLUS the glamour bard abilities are a lot of fun to play around with.
I will admit though, I'm in a fortunate enough situation with rolls that going into bard was actually viable.

I have a character that my dm hates thats 4 levels star druid and 8 cleric, it flies, and uses wither and bloom to aoe drain enemies and heal an ally while in chalice form for the extra free healing. And if it needs to be more blasty he uses archer constellation for a free bonus action d8 of radiant damage

I'm a Rogue main, and I really liked your ideas behind Cleric/Rogue. I fell in love with this concept back when I played an old 3rd edition game 20 years ago. The idea of a Cleric that follows a trickster god, or one that follows a god of hidden knowledge, really appeals to me.
When you get to your Monk video, seriously consider a Monk/rogue. I had a surprising amount of success with my role-playing and combat ability playing a Monk (cant remember subclass) and Inquisitive Rogue. It was, of all things, a grappler, singling out a single target at the edge of the melee (usually enemy archers, casters, or rogues) and using insightful fighting and grapples to prevent them from getting away.
As for role play, I was an Urchin who eventually joined the city guard. I had a mother, but she was a prostitute and didn't have time to raise me much. It was VERY disconcerting to the boss when, my dress covered in blood, I ripped it off and started to grapple him in the nude, punching his lights out.

I'm playing a tempest cleric with one level of divine soul sorcerer, and I gotta say it's great. Wading into combat with access to shield and absorb elements feels nice, and taking cantrips that don't depend on charisma for their utility let's me have a far more diverse range of tools. Especially with 4 cantrips to start. Having the 2d4 is just a cherry on top.
With how powerful up casting cleric spells like spiritual weapon and spirit guardians, and even cure wounds, it's not that bad to fall behind on the spell level progression.
For my build that meant 6 levels of cleric, then 1 of sorcerer so I have 4th level slots, which are strong even without 4th level spells.

If you are planning on splitting the levels more equally going forward and get to tempest cleric 6/sorcerer 6, pick up transmute spell metamagic, Fireball and Ashardalon's Stride spells. Upcast Ashardalon's Stride and make it lighting damage for a no save lightning damage spell that just automatically hits anything you get within 5 feet of no action required and let's you push them also without a save. Really great for dealing lots of damage while rounding enemies up to all be in range for an upcast and transmuted to lightning damage Fireball that you can then use the channel divinity to make it deal maximum damage.

After 4 years and 70 game sessions, my Cleric catchphrase to the DM/Gods above was "It has been foretold". Something the DM learned to dread. You go up to 8 as Cleric and take a 2 dip as Diviner 9, 10. In full plate, shield, you pickup Shield and Find Familiar, you now have an absurd number of cantrips, you can misty step and screw around with all rolls. Fun, useful, completely an A.

I played a human variant with Twilight Cleric 1 just to give darkvision to others, reroll initiative, and the Eldritch Adept feat for Devil's Sight (healing word was great, too.) Not to mention that it’s an amazing support character thanks to being able to choose my spells after every long rest. I can facilitate whatever need my party has whilst also enjoying a power fantasy.
I’d say a 5 level dip in Battle Master is the sweet spot. Get your maneuvers, get your extra attack, and continue to expand your cleric spells.
