    It is with great pleasure that I got to film a short documentary of, Baby Tee, a Rottweiler herding sheep. Robing and Rachel of On The Lamb Herding,
    The Rottweiler is one of the oldest of herding breeds. One author supposes that it has a history possibly dating back to the Roman Empire, the Rottweiler may be a descendant of ancient Roman drover dogs; a mastiff-type dog that was a dependable, rugged dog with great intelligence and guarding instincts. During their quest to conquer Europe, the Roman legions traveled in large numbers across the continent. The lack of refrigeration meant soldiers brought herds of cattle for food. Drover dogs kept the herd together and guarded it at night. Around A.D. 74 the Roman army travelled across the Alps and into what is now southern Germany. For the next two centuries the Roman drover dogs were continually used in herding and driving cattle for trade even after the Romans were driven out of the area by the Swabians.

    My rottie used to "herd" my 4 children everytime we went to the beach. If they went to far out in the water,,or got to spread apart that dog got to work rounding up the kids lol....My 5th child was special needs,and my rottie taught herself to alert me when he would have a seizure.....she was truly a Wonderful dog!💕🐾💕🐾

    My aunt and her family has had a lot, and I mean a lot, of dogs over the years and everyone agrees that their rottweiler named Britney was the best dog they ever had. Everyone loved her so much and was so sad when she had to be put down. She was so smart where she never left the yard. She didn't need to be tied up. She knew exactly what her territory was and didn't leave it without her family telling her it was okay.

    If you're serious about taking care of and socializing a big dog. A rottweiler will be one of the best dogs you get. Please make sure you have the time to exercise and socialize first. But they have such wonderful personalities, and are great with other animals and kids.

    Baby T is bout as bad ass as they come!! Look at that dog!!!🤯❤beautiful!
    What so many ppl dunno about the Rottweiler is that herding is almost instinctual for this breed. I met my stud bcuz his owner couldnt keep em off his calves. We took em. In all 6-7yrs we lived in that house, we didnt have doors that locked, and we never took our keys out of our cars, we left them in the drive way inside the vehicles. We ended up having 5 Rottweilers and 0 locks lol
    All 5 dogs were perfectly behaved around my 2 kids (2&6 when we met our 1st Rott') in fact...my son got lost in the woods going to the creek once. The stud was going NUTS once the coos and helicopters all showed up. I assumed he was anxious bcuz of all the strange visitors around his people. I mustve told him to go lay down a half dozen times. He couldnt. Idk why or what made me tell em to 'GO GET EM BOY' But...it wasnt the helicopter with the infrared stuff that found my son! Nor was it the cops flying thru the streets like bees swarming a bees nest ....it was that 180lbs Rottweiler who found my 7y.o. son in the woods!! That dog wouldnt let him out of his sight for days after that!! He was pretty protective of my kids. People acted rite when they came to our house bcuza the dogs. Imagine a pack of dogs all weighing 100lbs or more...daring u to get outta line lmao. They couldve all had lil signs tied around their necks saying,' g'head...drink a few beers, but dont think for a second ur gonna act an ass around my family'!!
    (We were in our mid-late 20s back then so, partying at out house was a part of our lives)
    This breed as a 6th sense about them that most ppl dont even have. All in all...for raising a family, theres not a better, more trusted breed. Theyll babysit, protect, teach and most of all love ur kids with every ounce of being they have...and they'll do it naturally! (Idk how to train a dog to find a lost kid!! Im talkn, i know how to train em to sit, fetch, talk and that kinda b.s.! Not protect and attack type stuff!) Theyre intensely intelligent and more than anything...they wanna please their humans! They love and watch over the entire family ...where most breeds love 1 person more than the rest...the Rott' loves its family. Get a urself the Rottwieler❤ especially of ur raising a family. That 7y.o. kid who was found by his dog...just got his own Rottweiler last yr, and its a wonderful thing to see that tradition carried from one generation to the next❤😉.
    Go get urself ur Rottweiler, youll see exactly what im talkn about

    • @longnamenocansayy

      luckily you have a choice between good good good good and good.
      i can tell you something about rotts. i miss my rott so much. she was a much better dog than i am a person.
      as far as barking; they are quiet as a breed. not so much barking.
      dominance is the big thing with a rott. you will see that between the two of you and you will see it with other animals. it's not neccessarily a bad thing. everyone has to know their place in the pack.
      as far as the nose: it's very keen. your rott will be able to track, and find people or things.
      your rott should be socialized from puppyhood. that means if you want the dog to get along with children, have children near by from puppyhood. if you want your dog to accept other dogs have other dogs and small critters around from puppyhood. the personality of your rottweiller is the personality you put there.
      i know many people who are familiar with rotts and they all say that rotts are big sweet marshmellows. that comes from socialization. can they be trained for security work? you bet your bippy.
      that goes back to raising your puppy the way you want it to be. either get it professionally trained or do it yourself. otherwise you're walking around with a half cocked gun. don't blame the dog for your mistakes.
      herding is so natural for a rott. remember dominance is a big issue for the breed. when they see a bunch of cows the first thing they want to do is establish dominance. they do that by looking at the eyes. whoever looks back at their eyes, that's who needs to be dominated. then it's a matter of "we're going to have a lovely time here today, just so long as everyone does what i want to do when i want to do it."
      i did not train my dog for protection work. it wasn't neccessary. because she was quiet and she stared at people in the eyes. anyone with half a brain just went quickly the other way if they had bad intentions. what no one knew, and no one needed to know was that she was the biggest sweetest marshmellow in marshmellow land. it's enough for you to know that they are fully capable as a breed and want to please their masters whatever the task.
      one final thing. my rottweiller could not swim. i didn't think it was possible, but some rotts can't swim.

      @4BearWarrior 4 роки тому +2

      @@longnamenocansayy I have had dogs all my life so knew this information other than rotties don't bark much. That is a quality that I love. Don't want a barking dog to give away my position when I want to be hidden when camping.

    Very very few American police and military departments in America use this Rotties. To heavy, not agile enough to climb, run and scale like a belgian. European still use them but as man stoppers in smaller cities. So you'll find alot more Police k9 in Europe, and russia. not responsive, not fast enough enough and off leash recall is difficult. I was asking a buddy of mine who messed around with this concept out in texas, he got some land north east of Dallas and he had a European male import whos terrifying to say the least. Very very hard working lines and an American bred female from AKC lines. He said his male was on a mission to destroy anything and anyone that came I to the pen. So he worked with him on not hurting the sheep. But he just enjoy walking around them or chasing them for fun. But the moment a person near. He went ballistic. The female was easier to train for this job and took to correction well. The male Rottie needed special care in how you corrected. He was very hard to get settled down or step back. Even with the handler. Hed do e factly what this guy did and just. Circle and bark and go from protecting sheep to getting everyone out the pen. I heard its hit and miss. Especially with Rotties. Some have very strong prey drive and fight drive . That if theyre not started young their instincts is to much for them. Things like agression redirection etc etc become a serious factor. The dog will actually have a go at the owner. I dont know I know Rotties were doing this way back but the selective breeding process for agressive rotties makes it hard.

      The weight really depends on the overall size as well as the breed, so just from my background knowledge a pup his age and breed should have enough weight on him to make his ribs unnoticeable to the eye but felt somewhat easily when touched. Keeping in mind a pup his age, it's better to be overweight than under (within reason of course) because he is still growing, like babies pups are gonna seem a little chunky until they grow to full size because they're still developing, they need more calories compared to their size than adults because they're growing so much.
      For his food, if you're doing kibble you can make it more appetizing by adding a little hot water enough that it is moist. A raw egg (shell too if the egg comes from a backyard hen house or locally bought) will also make his food more appealing to him while adding extra protein for muscle gain, and calcium for bone strength from the shell. Raw diet works best, but kibble supplemented with better foods is by far better than just kibble. Adding some chicken or beef when you can will help a lot too. Chicken broth is good to entice him but that comes with so much sodium so I'd say it's a last resort thing. Apart from this, do your own research too so you can make the best decisions for your pup.
      Good luck and congrats! Pitties are by far one of my favorites, and Rottweilers are so dependable. You got yourself a neat mix haha

    I’m not very educated on these herding competitions but this looks more like an old guy trying to keep the dog away from the sheep, not heeding them! I may be wrong but when I watched Border Collies, it was obvious that the dogs were herding and knew what they were doing!

    • @Cheaps928
      @Cheaps928 Рік тому

      Herding takes practice, the dog needs to move in lots of directions, they need to move away from the herd whenever the herd isnt going in the exact direction the dog wants them too. For example he moves away so the herd slows down then the dog turns back around and gets in the right position to herd the herd in the correct direction. They need to be precise

      The four varieties are the Malinois (fawn-mahogany, short coat with black mask), Tervuren (fawn-mahogany, long coat with black mask) the Laekenois (fawn, rough coat), and the Belgian Sheepdog, or Groenendael (black, long coat).
      Weight: 60 to 75 pounds
      Height: 1 foot, 10 inches to 2 feet, 2 inches tall at the shoulder
      Super ENERGETIC and sometimes very annoying if they dont get enough stimulation😄

      Sorry but I disagree. what’s practical about cutting off a part of a dog that is needed....easily damaged or broken??? Right then in that case, we should cut the tails off all dogs then, especially working breeds?..easily broken, never heard anything like it..

      This particular dog sounds like he does a lot of show work, so if he wants to qualify for something like conformation I believe he would have to have his tail docked according to AKC rules. Also the majority of Rott breeders will require docking as part of the contract. I agree with you but it's hard to get around the rules for breed standards when you get a puppy from a breeder.

    • @tashacrawford1163

      some times when a tail gets broken (usually from larger animals stepping on them) it has to be amputated. its much harder and more life threatening to amputate part of the tail once the bones are fully formed than it is to dock the tail when its still soft as a very young pup. my best friend had a boxer with a full tail and he broke it. it was so damaged that they had to amputate it, which was a long process, he had to wear a cone for 8 weeks so he would leave it alone while it healed. there were many complications during recovery. when they dock the tail as a pup the bone is still soft and heals quickly. my rottie's nub (as we call it lol) was fully healed before 4 weeks of age.

    • @anag5197
      @anag5197 2 роки тому +1

      I think the docked tail contributes to the knee issues rotties notoriously have, also my rotties vet said the worst sound she ever heard was the screams from puppies having their tails dock. Also, European standards require a full tail and docking is no longer a requirement in showing

    Hey Zeke I have a question and with all do respect I love your videos and your content/knowledge overall. However you do make it seem or exaggerate the mastiff ancestry of the Rottweiler. Are you embarrassed or not aware that the immediate ancestor to the Rottweiler is non other than the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog????

    • @stefanopatton1809

    • @vikingdogmanship

      They are awsome dogs 😁😎 A Fun fact you: The Doberman emerges from old shorthaired shepherd-dog stock combined with Rottweiler, Black and Tan Terrier, and Smooth-Haired German Pinscher!😎 I Have an English lab, but everyone think he is a corso or rottie mix. Some say the lab is related to the newfie dog, i think there might be either corso or rottie in eng labs ancestry. My dog is offcourse super beautiful handsome and a great protector!!😘

    • @vikingdogmanship
      @vikingdogmanship 4 роки тому +3

      @@stefanopatton1809 The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is a large, powerful animal. Sharing a common ancestry with the Roman Molossian dogs, it was bred for draft and drover work, and has the familiar, striking tri-color markings of the Swiss Mountainbreeds. 😄😄

    • @DogumentaryTV
      @DogumentaryTV  4 роки тому +5

      Bro don't say, "with all do respect", then ask a disrespectful question.
      "The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is considered one of Switzerland's oldest and largest of the four Swiss variety dog breeds. It is thought that they are descended from the large Mastiff-like dog called the Molossus, a type of Mastiff used in the Roman Colosseums. These dogs were brought to the Alps by invading Romans." -aprpets.org
      If you don't understand the Rottweiler and the GSMD developed in the same region, Rottweil is in Southern Germany, Germany is north of Switzerland. Both breeds were developed from Molossus dogs bought to the region by Romans. To say that one breed came from the other, is pure stupidity. It shows you have no understanding of world history, how dog breeds develop, and what exactly a dog breed is.
      So I ask you were you embarrassed or just not aware?

    I got bit by a rottweiler at work, just for coming too close to the owner. Since then I can't even handle the sight of a rottweiler , even if it's across the street. If it's coming towards me I freeze in fear. That bite scared the sh** out of me. I'm not so scared of the dog per se, but scared of such a big dog with a bad owner. And that's something you can't tell by just looking at them. And seeing sooo many videos advertising this big strong breed like it is a lap dog and everyone can handle it, scares me even more.

      People have gotten out of touch with reality. Anyone can handle any dog breed, they just need to pay attention and use their oversized head to figure out the dog's thought process.
