The training I do as a result of watching your videos saved me yesterday. I was coming through a blind curve when a car backed out of a driveway into my lane. I was able to apply steady progressive braking with a swerve and go on about my day. The practice I have done as a result of your videos has made me a better rider. Thanks!!!

Thanks, I have increased my practicing this last week, and am now consciously drilling emergency braking. Making progress 😁. That's a good point you make about including the quick getaway as a fundamental part of the drill. I realise now I've been drilling a quick stop, then having a look to see how short I stopped, having a ponder, then eventually take off again (ie drilling how to get myself rear ended... which is never good) . Gonna fix that tomorrow, then add the evasion maneuver once I have that down.

These tips just helped to add another layer of awareness for me. The BAsic Rider Course manual instructs to be hyper aware while approaching an intersection-emphasizing your field of vision from your 9 o’clock position thru your 3 o’clock but you saying to be aware of who is behind you before you go through an intersection really hit home for me. Thank you so much for all you do, man. You deserve any success that I hope and pray comes your way. You share extremely valuable info. If you’re ever in the Orlando area you’ve always got a spot to rest your head, bro.

This is a great exercise. I have been rear ended on a car. Big semi decided to turn left w/o putting his blinker on, car in front of me stopped, I stopped far for her bumper, lady behind me didn't, I had a hitch, so her front end didn't look good. No damage to my car, she lunched me toward the car in front, but I had enough room that I only tapped her, no damage in front either. You have to pay attention no matter what you drive, but in a motorcycle is critical. This was in the city on a 35 mph zone. In that scenario with the bike, I would have been close to the right of the car, stop and just move out of the way because I would have been peanut butter in that sandwich. Great teaching FE 👍

Excelllent! This is important information that can save lives. Had a friend back in the 1970’s who emergency stopped in an intersection when a lady in front of him jammed on her brakes. He stopped perfectly, but then got rear ended and spent months in the hospital, had to wear a bag as he lost much of his colon and intestines. He still suffers from that one accident. He wasn’t wearing gear, and had no training like this back then. Take this training seriously.

Funny that this video appeared in my recommendations today - I legitimately was practicing emergency braking and take-offs today for roughly an hour and change in the empty lot by my house.
Consistently averaging JUST under 20ft at 22/25mph, no skids. Take-offs, bike leaves just a hint of rubber (klr650, so mild knobbies), but gaining confidence slowly.

Your instructional videos (all of them) are fantastic. I wouldn't dream of commenting about any of the techniques you demonstrate, you are way better at them than I am.
This is about me, when I'm practicing.
What I have found is that if I practice braking with a dedicated stop marker, it actually puts me off - I tend to tense up with anticipation. So I don't do that any more. It was very useful to establish a benchmark (check that I could stop from a given speed in ok distance) but now I find it very counterproductive (for me).
So what I do now is this.
First, I find a quiet section of downhill road to practice on. This makes the emergency stop a little more difficult, and hence more valuable.
I start at the top, pull away with short shifts to 3rd gear. I don't pay any attention to speed, but I generally get to about 30 / 35 kph.
As soon as I am in 3rd gear I emergency brake down to stop (in first gear).
The moment I have my left foot down I pull away and repeat the exercise
Repeat to the bottom of the road. Drive back to the top and do it again.

I was practicing this the other day, here in Portland Oregon we had a break in the rain, but the pavement was still wet. The first couple attempts the tires broke loose, skidding well past the target stopping mark, because of to much rear brake. I learned to ease into the rear brake and use more front brake sooner. Application of front/rear break timing is critical in this exercise. When you get it right you know it. Great video, great exercise.

Sweet! Now just practice so you can do it 20 times in a row without making a mistake. Then go up to Blue Belt stopping, stopping less than 18ft at 20mph....the Brown Belt, stopping less than 18ft at 25mph.

Technique is the same no matter the speed and if I'm going more than 30mph, swerving would be my first option before braking. Either way, you say you're past that...meaning you can do it? 10 times in a row Brown Belt?

True though, great tips again. What would be an absolute bugger though is if you emergency braked and you were kicking it down to first gear but it wouldn't get out of neutral, my bike does that sometimes so you have to back it up a touch first. I hope that never happens. And it's quite mad to see you endo the bike like that.

I'm glad I have a whole lot of bicycle experience. I put 40,000 miles on my bicycles in the 10 years before I got my first motorcycle at age 55. The emergency braking drills in the MSF were 2nd nature. On a bicycle the human's weight position/COG is very important in emergency braking; I had a car pull out in front of me once and when I stopped (there was no conscious though involved here) I was slamming down from a stoppie onto the rear wheel and my belly was on the saddle, me having pushed off to the back and down to lower and shift back my COG to get max braking without endo'ing. On a motorcycle it's probably not very practical to shift back on most seats but getting low behind the bars might help.

'Course in the summer around here it's often sand and gravel, a lot of the corners here are badly designed and sand washes over corners in rain storms so if I haven't been over a corner since the last rain I take those corners slow enough that I can straighten up if needed. I also try not to ride a route in the winter in the dark if I haven't been over it to scout in the daytime. Going to the gym I try to go in the daylight and take note if there is anything bad in the corner for when I'm coming back in the dark.

@@MotoJitsu The drill taught me a lot this afternoon. ABS was kicking in on my rear-brake during the first few attempts, so I corrected the training to incorporate more front brake pressure and less rear brake. Also, I am guessing, I was going a little too fast during the first drill attempts for the 18-foot stopping distance, which was causing me to be heavier on the braking power. Looking forward to practicing this drill a lot more. Thanks again for the lesson.

    Hi Eddie,
I’m really happy I found your channel, it’s totally awesome!
It’s a lot of useful practical advices. Lovie it !
    Actually I have a maybe a stupid question…
I change my moto and with new I started to practice all the stuff from the beginning …
and obviously emergency braking makes me most problems… I know I need to learn my new baby
but never before I get so many "stoppies" rear wheel up (I would say it never happens on my old moto).
Of course I can understand that the characteristic of the motorcycle is different (and many other things).
But it makes me a bit surprised and … hmmm
(I know SHUT UP AND PRACTICE! ) :D
On this movie I see you get also "stoppie" all the time … is it normal … ?
How to master it with the speed 25-30MPH (40-50KPH) or faster.
Thx for your answer. Great job! Cheers

I agree great video 👍 but... I would eliminate that hard breaking causing you rear wheel all the way up in the air ?? That is not necessary not only that ! just imagine every second in that situation counts ? And how many of those seconds you loose coming so hard to a stop lifting rear wheel then wait.... for it to come down so you can accelerate and get a hell out .... before you get someone up I you rear End.
Smooth braking using both brakes 👍 coming to a stop as quick as you can !! But not lifting the rear wheel yes ?

This is emergency braking #1 priority is not hitting the car or kid in front of you...a 1ft high stoppie can save you 2-3ft of forward momentum...after that, priority #2 is getting out of the way if someone is behind you.

Don't forget we are seeing the 'stopping distance' only from point A to point B. What we don't see and need to understand is that we must see or realise the need to stop in the first place before we actually head for the brakes. Ok. That requires our attention on the road and taking in all that is happening. In this demonstration we are approaching an intersection so knowing that it's possible for this to happen [ anticipation] [assume/presume] it will happen and be on the lookout for it to happen. We approach and slow and drop gear/s Far many times bikers don't anticipate etc and go through intersections in cruise mode ie. High gear and that will not help give us the stopping ability that we want. A lazy gear from a lazy mind so to speak. So on approach drop some speed and a gear or two and as said be in no more than 3rd then as we stop we are deacellerating also. and with less power to the back wheel. The bike will push forward less hard against the front wheel and that will give us more traction and far safer ballance.

    • @MotoJitsu
      @MotoJitsu  5 років тому

Yes, people should predict stupid will happen and must be prepared to do anything. No matter what gear you're in, stopping fast has nothing to do with it, your skill at emergency braking does. You could be in 6th gear or 3rd, if you don't know how to stop fast nor practice, you're screwed.

@@MotoJitsu Stopping or actually preparing and assuming that one may have to brake or to stop because of some possible danger has everything to do with road safety. Its being pro active and decreases or eliminating the danger that has materialised or mitigates the effects or injuries which could possibly be expected.
I enjoy your videos and what you put forward. What you excel at is an understanding that riders don't always do the best, or safest or least dangerous thing and as such must eventually have to extricate themselves from a possible collision. That is required after we have committed ourselves to a course of action or have found ourselves inadvertently in a situation which could end badly if not for the training that you are giving.
We need the knowledge, that you put forward so well in order to extricate ourselves from a possible danger. If we havn't done so already by pro active defensive riding techniques. A danger that usually occurs if we fail to ride with a safer attitude to riding and that defensive riding technique.Failing or being unable to anticipating that something bad could happen under certain circumstances whilst riding is the recipe for a collision about to happen. The understanding of possible dangers with a positive state of mind and the skill set that comes with knowledge and experiences, one's own and that of ones teachers, to understand the basics of road safety together with these skills as shown by yourself could help prevent a lot of collisions and subsequent pain, injury and hardship. Not only to ourselves but to that of our family and friends.
Carry on with what you are showing., Its some of the most positive ideas out there for a long time.
