      Hi motojitsu. I am picking up a 2022 tracer gt soon. It will be mostly used for weekend rides with the mrs as pillion. I have a few questions
      1 - how is the tracer 9gt as a bike
      2- do I have to always adjust the rear suspension when riding solo and 2 up
      3- if it has a Manual pre load how to adjust it and what setting it should be at. How would I know that it's at the right setting for solo and 2 up
      Your help is much appreciated

    What my father had me do as a passenger when I was younger than 12 years old now makes sense to me after watching this video. He always wanted me to hold onto him in a hug with full upper body contact. My head laid on the side, resting on his back. He always reminded me not to move at all when the motorcycle is moving.

    i've always found it much easier to have non riders as pillions because they just do as they're told and stay neutral on the bike.

      Lols my friend can't relate he hated riding with another chick after telling her what she needs to know, and she still wants to ride with him. Meanwhile I join him on a couple of rides once in a while and he's like "why can't she be like you..." I laughed so loud and said bike life isn't for everyone nor anyone.

    I learned this lesson the hard way when I was a teenager with a Honda 50 Super Sport in the mid-60's. I became very proficient riding by myself and I wanted my mom to enjoy the ride around our tiny neighborhood. I asked her to hop on without remembering that she didn't even know how to ride a bicycle. When we came to the first turn - a T-intersection requiring a right or left turn - I leaned left but the little Honda went straight ahead no matter how hard I leaned. As I came to a stop in our neighbor's yard (thank God no car was coming), I asked Mom what she was doing back there. She said she was helping me by leaning in the opposite direction. In other words, from the rear we looked like the letter "V".
    Bottom line: Before getting on the motorcycle, find out what your prospective passenger knows or doesn't know. You are NOT in full control when you have a passenger.

    • @MotoJitsu
      @MotoJitsu  6 років тому +38

      That's why you don't take passengers who have no awareness of riding...I usually only take passengers who are riders themselves. Since there's always a chance of them doing something stupid, your skills better be able to handle it or it's your fault for taking the passenger. Lesson learned I'm sure!

    I'd be careful about telling a pillion not to move on the bike, especially a first timer. Some take it literally and they get really stiff and end up not enjoying it because they think you're going to crash if they move. Tell them they can adjust their body as long as they warn you first.
    Also, for a first timer, teach them a signal to tell you if you're going too fast. Sometimes totally normal speeds seem fast for someone who's never been on a bike.

    • @MotoJitsu
      @MotoJitsu  6 років тому +6

      I do mean it literally...if they move, it will mess me up. If the passenger doesn't want to ride with me, they don't have to. It's my choice to take one and if they're not willing to adhere to my requests, they don't have to ride. Plus, I wouldn't take a first timer...I only take passengers who have been a passenger before or ride themselves. If you do other things for your passengers, then great. We all have our things we do and things that work for us. This video was my experience for riding passengers all around on the streets and I even take passengers on the track.

    • @musguelha14
      @musguelha14 6 років тому +16

      Fast Eddie’s Motorcycle Fun Yeah, I can see your point.
      But pillions do move, and It's mostly fine. A bit weird the first times, but you get used to it, like anything really.
      Also, most viewers watch this video because they're going to take a pillion for the first time, most likely their friend or wife, so It's a bit weird that you don't take new passengers. Everybody has to start somewhere.
      People make it up to be harder then it actually is. The first time I rode a bike I had a pillion on the back, my riding instructor. Might seem weird but It's a common thing over here.

    • @MotoJitsu
      @MotoJitsu  6 років тому +3

      Pedro Silva They do move a bit, but I encourage my passengers not to. If I ever do take one that’s brand new, it will be here in this parking lot. I can do everything with a passenger as I can without one...

    • @OnlyKaerius
      @OnlyKaerius 6 років тому +3

      I've seen advice elsewhere to tell the pillion to look over your shoulder into turns. So if you lean your body, they will follow. I guess it's a matter of preference, but I think it might actually be an important bit of advice if what they're holding onto is you.

    • @MotoJitsu
      @MotoJitsu  6 років тому

      I tell my passengers to look in the direction I'm going...but not move their body. She needs to be paying attention like I am and not daydreaming.

    Great tips! I always thought slightly adjusting your body as a passenger (if your butt is sore) is fine while going straight at speed, but it only makes sense not to move in corners, during slow speed maneuvering or when stopping. That's when balanced mass is most critical and any movement that would upset that balance is very likely to cause a tip over.

    Nicely done. I was chuckling at the end because your passenger was slowly increasing in weight as the video went on --- 100 lbs, 150 lbs, and then 200 lbs. Just curious what the camera woman thought of that because she is definitely well south of 200. 😉

    Great advice.... But, I never put the bike in gear until the passenger is on, and I'm ready to move, IF you have the bike in gear before the passenger climbs on and you both lose your balance, you will let the clutch out and it will shoot forward.. that's not good.. take care and safe riding.. 6teve trekker

    New rider here, and get asked this question a lot "when can i ride pillion on your bike". And my answer is the same ... not till i am ready. Guess there's more to this than just me being ready. I am still learning, still getting used to riding my bike and getting to be confident in it. My bike hasn't been on any major roads yet, it probably won't for some time. Looking at your videos makes me realise that there's a still lot more to learn (liked your positioning tip in the making a quick getaway video, something i need to put into practice the next time i am on public roads). Thanks for the videos, keep it up.

    • @MotoJitsu

      You're a smart man! It's not just you being ready, it's having the confidence through experience and practice you know you can handle yourself and the passenger in case something happens. You must know how to stop and swerve and corner and deal with traffic before ever taking another passenger....plus, like I said in the video, it's a big deal to have the suspension adjusted, not just for yourself, but for the passenger...minimum to your weight.

    I came across your channel a couple days ago, and I'll have to say you explain these tips very well - subscribed! I'm glad you included how the rider is not supposed to move / lean while on the back. Many videos say to have the passenger lean with you around corners, etc. Better to have them just stay upright. If you do your job with proper counter steering, they should not have to work and help with the turn (more likely, as you mentioned, would end up making it more difficult). Will keep following this channel, and catch up on the many I missed so far!

    So many thoughts in my head! Where was @Motojitsu back in the early 90s!?! I would not have walked away from riding for almost 20 years. Why didn't I think to search for a Motojitsu "passenger" video just a couple of weeks ago before I took my wife around the neighborhood!?!? Good thing about watching this is now there is more for her and I to Shut Up And Practice on. She will start driving over to the parking lot where myself and sons practice, fully gear up and practice being the passenger. My biggest takeaway is, "if you can't pass the MSF with a passenger, don't take them on the street." Great video!! Oh! Before the feminists jump all over me with the ... "Why don't you teach her?" "Let her ride it" Blah Blah Blah... she has started basic friction zone stuff on our son's R3 and is taking the MSF in April.

    Glad I learned to ride at 12 years old; back in the 60’s there were no rules, other than don’t crash. No helmets, just jeans, tee shirt and your Converse sneakers. You just learned to ride by your own bravery and wits. We used to ride two up on a street bike on a dirt track/trail, jumps, whoops and all. We managed to get a Honda 305cc Super Hawk to go 100mph two up on bumpy fire road. Seriously; I’ve had my offs, but I survived it all in one piece. Still riding at 65, although I’ve added a few more PPE’s. Still got the lust for speed though !! 😎

One thing that I would like to add, that I have had save me a tip over a number of times, is to drop the kick stand down while a passenger is loading and unloading. Of course the bike is upright, but the side stand will serve as a safety should you passenger board wildly unbalanced, or your left foot slips on any loose stuff. I have all of my passengers ask me "Clear?" and wait for me to respond "Clear" before they board.

Four eyes are better than two, even more important two brains are better than one! That is if your passenger even cares. I've had both kinds. Nice incites on the topic! Thank you for passing on your experience. Ultimately if I was involved with someone the goal would be for them to have a bike of their own. • @Vorador47
      @Vorador47 5 років тому

      @@sphenoidjjj they are saying it in a different way, but end result is kind of the same. basically, if the passenger doesn't lean left or right, all is good. what harry was referring to is, the person might think by saying don't move, they might try and stay upright relative to the ground, so then the bike leans left, they lean right . whereas if they stayed perfectly still then they would automatically be leaning left because the bike is leaning left.. like the guy said in the video about the rock. if you strap a big rock to the bike so it cant move around, all you have now is a heavier bike. but lets say he put that rock lose in a carry box, every time you go round corners or lean the bike that rock will slide around inside the box, so now not only do you have a heavier bike, but you have an unstable one too.
      as if you had that bike with a heavy rock in the box, as you start a left turn, the centrifugal force will push the rock to the right, making it so the riding has to shift more of his weight to the left to get the bike to lean enough to make the turn, but once the bike is leaned over far enough, gravity overcomes the centrifugal force and the rock will slide to the left side, suddenly making the bike heavier that side, the bike will then low side, as the rider won't be able to shift his weight back fast enough. any kind of heavy lose weight on a bike is dangerous.

    Damn, a "bad passenger" can be really dangerous on the public road, especially on roundabouts.
    Only person i take behind me is my girlfriend, she's been riding at the back of motorcycles for 10 years, and it shows, it's a pleasure to have her.
    Anyway, every single thing you said is spot on. Especially the "communication" part, this is really underrated.

      A bad passenger will definitely suck to ride with...but THE most important thing is the person riding the bike needs to be really, really good and be able to handle whatever may happen.

      @@MotoJitsu Yep, agreed. First time i took someone on the back of my old CBF 125, i knew what i was doing.
      Training before getting your license is much more intense here in France, you have a "slow" part during the test, which involves riding as slow as possible on a slalom then a straight line (It's timed, too fast, you're out), and then you have to it again with someone on the back. And we also had hours of riding with another candidate on the back, for the sake of training.
      But still, wasn't as confident as i could be, and made sure the person behind had already ridden extensively as a passenger in the past, to eliminate the "bad passenger" factor.
      Already had a few emergency situations with a passenger, i totally agree you have to be perfectly in control and aware of your skills if you want it to go smoothly. If you aren't good enough, you're just gonna hurt two people instead of one.
      I don't always take the time to setup my rear preload accordingly though, should do it each and every time.

      Regardless of the basic course in any country, it's still the basics. So much more is needed to handle a bike w/a passenger out on the roads. Like I say, if you can't do Blue Belt with a passenger, you're not good enough to take one out on the public roads...also, if you know nothing of suspension, I also don't recommend taking one.

      @@MotoJitsu Wies words indeed, totally agreed.
      Trained for a bit with my first passenger before hitting the road haha !
      Plus, i'm very very light, so i personally can't take any risks, as even with me 6'1",a 5'4" girl is heavier than me.

      Anton Larchey that’s why understanding and setting your suspension is so important.

    I own a Yamaha R3, I’m alittle more or equal to 5’6 and I weight 140 lbs, I’m trying to be ready just in case if someone wants to be my passenger lol.

      Since your bike has hardly any adjustable suspension I would hold off on passenger riding for a while...if you can do Brown Belt in MotoJitsu, I wouldn’t take a passenger....or if you can do White & Blue Belt with a passenger then probably shouldn’t be with one on the public roads.

    I have searched high and low. There is no video on handling a bike with cargo box (cargo weight less than 50kg). Pls would you do a video on how to safely handle (eg. Mounting onto a bike with cargo, dismounting it, how to park the bike for loading the cargo box eg. Can side stand be used or must use main stand. cargo top box , effect of wind on a standard 100litre box or larger. Thanks!

      Cosmo John I don’t think there needs to be...if you put a weight on the back of the bike and it’s strapped down right and not moving...nothing is really needed to do different. Just be aware it’s a bit heavier...may slightly effect how you corner a bit but it’s usually not an issue.
