Jim Bob Story - Carter USM & Beyond - Interview by Matt Bristow - 2008

- The early-Nineties success of Carter USM, the two-man band featuring Jim Bob (real name James Morrison) and Les Carter was both unexpected and unstoppable. They had 14 Top 40 singles, a Number 1 LP (‘1992 - The Love Album’) and played over 800 gigs all over the world - a rollercoaster ride that just had to be turned into an equally breathtaking book. Goodnight Jim Bob - On The Road With Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine is considerably catchier than its title, and Jim Bob draws from it as he relives those halcyon days and beyond in the company of Mark Bristow.
Most underated band of the 90's end of.
One of the best English songwriters ever. With some of the most brilliantly English lyrics ever
14 years old Dec 1992 Bournemouth Bic. First gig with my mates. Loved Carter ❤
The interviewer isn't supposed to be interesting, or charismatic, or even likable. He's supposed to ask relevant questions, then shut up and let the interviewee ramble on about whatever. He's done a cracking interview here, Jim Bob opened right up here, on stuff that another interviewer might never have let him run with.
Have to say Jim Bob has aged really well. Looks great.
Just watched him at Butlins Minehead, he played quite a few Carter songs and the crowd loved it, loads of Carter t-shirts down there
15:45 Carter still has the most clever lyrics I ever heard
My mate James Flanders dragged me to many of their gigs in London... fabulous times! Always missed the last train home.
1992 The Love Album is one of my favourite albums of all time.
"We were doing a gig supporting Duran Duran in a shopping centre" ... words I never expected Jim Bob to say!
Love listening to him speak :)
Lovely fella
The best lyricist out there
This feels like he's being interviewed in a police station for a suspected murder...
And he's wearing an M&S shirt
😂😂
Jim Bob would never squeal.
@@battybri 🤣🤣🤣
I always thought of Jim Bob as a poet anyway. In fact, as part of my degree course, I chose 'England' when we had to study a poem about England. One of my all-time favourite bands.
jim bobs my hero :)
Saw them last night at Brixton.. Cracking...
Awesome great to hear the back story to the band.
Yep
Jim Bob is my Great, Great Grandson. The whole fam are so proud of him.
Really?
@@aversivespider Absolutely. He's an inspiration
@@nodiggity9472 how lovely xxx
@@aversivespider Lovely doesn't even cover it
You must be at least 140 years old
Great interview.
Jim Bob was 47/48 years old at the time of this interview. He looks damn good for that age!
I'm not sure when he was born.
Think he’s 60 now
He's 36. The music biz takes it out of you.
Carter were loved by the underground scene, squatters, hippies, punks and free festival techno heads indulged.
New Cross, represent!!!
A fine writer & performer!💯🫡
Have a signed copy of the book, a great read
Great interview, nice to hear some back ground to Carter. Not much of it about.
I saw them twice in the 1990s, once for 1992 then for Post historic Monsters. I saw them in the US, which was bitter sweet. When I saw them at Slim's in San Francisco there were only like 50 people there, I saw a lot of shows in the 90s, but that show at slims and another I saw in Palo Alto where two of the best most memorable shows I had ever seen, they were a brilliant fucking band. I love Jim Bob's solo stuff, just tough to find here in the states. Dumb And Dumber, such sad and sweet song.
I realize I am responding to an 8 year old comment, but I was at that show in Palo Alto, at the Edge. I just found this video recently.
@@amybbb73 I realise I'm replying to a 2 year old reply to a 10 year old comment but I'm gutted I never caught them at slim's
This might sound crazy but my nan is Jim bobs cousin
listening to carter usm saved me from running with the pack and been a sheep
Not being funny, but sheep don't run in packs. That's "Wolves" you're thinking of.
@@nodiggity9472 :D Herd. ("Heard what?" "Of sheep." "Of course I've heard of sheep!").
hes my uncle (im jake lockley) hes from my mums side of the family 'morrison'
hey just out of chance who is your mum because hes my great uncle.
@@kailen-jamesmorrison9440 Right little family get together in this thread! 💗
Such a good interview, thanks. I thought the interviewer was excellent. He also played Will in The Inbetweeners, didn't you know.
my first borns middle names are James Robert after him. :)
And his Christian name is Carter?
@@anthonykey9706 No the Mrs wouldn’t allow it lol
Between One Fern
I write intelligent lyrics learnt it off Jim Bob
I dunno if it is crass to say this but i always thought they were the alternative pet shop boys, or if the pet shop boys had done punk it would sound like this perhaps!!
Me and my ego are thinking of Dairy Products and that other band EMF.
You're . . . . unbelievable.
@adorant what?!! Leigh was commenting on the working classes hardships in the eighties. Have you seen Meantime, High Hopes? These were done in the eighties before Carter Usm. Its more like Britpop was influenced by Leigh.
He's my 3rd cousin apparently, I'm Oceana-Skye Morrison.
And he's my uncle, so that makes my something cousin?
No, your my third aunt or something
You must be my 4th or something..not 100% sure
Really? Ah right aha
101 relatives.
Why does the interviewer have the look of someone that's just dropped one
I didn’t like them at the time - but they have some great lyrics and songs .
Byte the head of bats? :)
Hes.my.best.mates.uncles.godsons.neighbour
Sounds like a lyric he'd write.
Horrified at his hair!!
