- Best remembered as the leather-clad, black-gloved rocker who stared sullenly down Top Of The Pops cameras in the glam-rock early Seventies, Alvin Stardust had already enjoyed fame in the beat era a decade earlier as Shane Fenton. After his spell in the Seventies charts he was reborn yet again in the Eighties as a retro-pop balladeer, songs about Buddy Holly harking back to his youth. His half-century in the business has seen many changes and he has adapted to them far more effectively than most, so his story is a fascinating one. Alvin recounts it with a welcome humour - the ‘stick-on sideburns’ story is worth the price of admission alone!
One of the best English pop artist that I met in my 9 years as a rock journalist in London... After an interview I asked him to take some photos outside... It had started raining, but he walked right into Regents Park, dressed in leather without a hat... I had to follow him quickly with my camera open: Just wonderful down to earth, generous human being.

I met Alvin after a small club gig in the early 2000's. He was chatty and not stand-offish at all. A gentleman and a gentle man. I had a selfie with him, probably before selfie's were popular and I treasure it today. RIP Alvin.
I really appreciated the interviewer letting Alvin give lengthy answers to questions rather than keep interrupting, which is what happens in most interviews you see. Great interview. RIP Alvin.

A great interview from a very humble man who achieved the dizzy heights of pop stardom in the 70's. A true performer, still going strong right up until his untimely death this year. Alvin's guitar will be worth a fortune now & a wonderful memento to leave his family.
I interviewed Alvin when I was 16 on a community radio station in 1996, great times! He said my headphones were bigger than me...! They were. We spent the whole day together talking music and general banter, fond memories of that.

I Played a week with Alvin (Bernard) When he was Shane Fenton at the Garrick Club, Leigh where I was in the resident band around 1970. Real nice guy and, at the time, married to Iris Caldwell, Rory Storm's sister, who was the inspiration for the Beatles 'I Saw Her Standing There.'. In those days he also did a comedy act with the Fentones. Good act but two years later he became Alvin Stardust.
Now that's a great interview, Alvin's story is an amazing one, could make a great little movie or TV docu-drama. R.I.P Alvin.
A lovely man and the band as well, no egos, met them at Kings Lynn Corn Exchange, terrific live band, never forgot that night.

What a lovely man. I could listen to his stories all day and night. I came across this by accident and remembered him as a kid, we used to take the piss out of him cause we were more into kids stuff stuff, probabily too young to get him, if I'm honest i thought it would be something to laugh at. This has totally changed my view of Alvin Stardust. Sad we never saw him more like this on TV before he passed.
I worked for a utiity company & randomly received a call from Alvin in mid to late 80s.He was such a gentleman & was so lucky to have had that honour
Just found this interview.. fantastic to hear Alvin tell his own life story, and some truly amazing facts about how it all started as both personas! Remember hom being the first pop star I had ever seen live at the Central Hall Chatham, some time in the 70s.. Great guy, fantastic era of music 🎶

What a fantastic interview, I was enthralled. I looked at this whilst working on my Billy Fury Dance Show which is planned for the London stage at the Shaw Theatre in April 2016. Alvin wrote a tribute to Billy Fury which I am using in my flyer for the show. Michael Parkinson

What a lovely guy. A friend told me, about an interview with Alvin. When I was at school. I watched him on Top of the Pops and thought he was so cool I'm his leathers, I wanted to be him, and get gurls. The Buddy Holly story is amazing. Could you imagine if it was you?. So sad he passed. R IP brother.
I have been trying to find some clips on UA-cam of his TV show from around 1989 on ITV. If someone could put some clips up or give a link to where I could find some old clips it would be very nostalgic for me. I remember it from my childhood.
I understand he came to faith in Christ in the late 1980's... a talented man, glad this 54 year old American knows his music. ✝️

That's a guitar made by Melodija Menges- circa 1955-a Yugoslavian make- good tone. You can buy one fairly cheaply on ebay.

Pete wrote it, but this man sang it. Also the world is a lesser place without both of them.
@@bonesybeat1949 Nope, It is now well known that Peter Shelly sang the song, but Shane/Bernard mimed to it - and became Alvin. Peter sang it on the show Lift Off, but didn't much like performing,, though he later had a couple of hits as himself. They had very similar voices. On Jealous Mind, the two are mixed in together, and the growly Elvis bits are Peter and Alvin/Shane. Mary Wilde turned down the chance of becoming Alvin Stardust. Alvin probably got so used to saying he sang it, that he had to say it and then after decades believed it..
