When Len saw Rin, he was at his happiest. Now, they're spending the rest of time in the fields, telling each other things they weren't ready to admit on paper.......

Honestly, every main character here is a victim. The Prisoner, the Daughter, even the Father. They all suffered because of circumstances which put them between rocks and hard places....or a fence and a gas chamber. Can't really hate the father THAT much because even though he could be considered the "villain" by ripping up the letters and killing off Len, he ironically brought them together in the afterlife by realizing his mistakes and handing the last letter to his daughter before death. And since he ordered Len dead...yea... In other words, the darkness which separated them brought them together again.
This whole song is sad I cannot even find the saddest part, although the part I really start tearing up is when Len calls out for Rin after she gives him the last paper plane.

It wasn't envy. It was anger and a feeling of hopelessness. During that time, people like Len were generally thought of as the greatest evil alive. Rin's father, in desperation of seeing his daughter die slowly, needed someone - anyone - to lash out his sadness on. Rin got ill faster due to her trips out of the hospital, her father convinced himself that Len must have forced her with empty promises. So he took revenge. Right after Len hit him, though, he seemed to wake up from his crazed state and he realized what he had done. However, Len had already hit him. That was an open attack on an officer. If Rin's father would have protested against Len's inevitable punishment, he too would have been captured and severely handled. Not only him, but perhaps the rest of his remaining family as well, if he even had anyone left. He gave Rin that paper plane of Len's she dropped when her muscles had weakened too much to hold on to it, so that she could die with a memorial of someone dear to her. It was Rin's father's way to lastly beg her for forgiveness and his last request of wishing her a peaceful farewell. I understand the father's actions. He probably lost his wife, and was about to lose his daughter. He needed someone to blame, to lash out, to hurt. He simply couldn't handle his daughter dying like that. If I were in his shoes, I might have done the same. I wouldn't simply accept my child's fate, I would want revenge. Can we really blame him?

siraphob Buahong Problem is, he WAS being a "good nazi". In that place, time and era, it was deemed alright to kill the appointed group that supposedly was to blame for all misfortune. (In this example, that'd be Len - a Jew - and Rin's father - a nazi officer -.) In their side's perspective, he was doing the right thing. The only reason why Rin and Len interacted the way they did was because they held the innocence of children. They didn't understand mistreatment against others, as they were still young and untrained in the cruel ways of politics and discrimination. The adults did know and acted accordingly, and the father did what he thought was right - and that what was in fact deemed right - especially - by the high ranking officers (sometimes even civilians were aware, but didn't mind) at the time. With this theme hanging around, the father's actions, regret and the end, the message of the song would be "don't put others below yourself, because eventually in death everyone is equal", or amongst those lines (Rin and Len meeting in the Afterlife - even though they probably had different world-views, they were able to look past that and still love one another). So, yes, in that time and era, with the practically brainwashed hatred for a specific group, a lot of parents would have done the same when confronted with the amount of sorrow, fear and anger Rin's father had been. I therefore cannot blame the man personally, even though his actions were wrong.

It wasn't envy. It was anger and a feeling of hopelessness. During that time, people like Len were generally thought of as the greatest evil alive.
Rin's father, in desperation of seeing his daughter die slowly, needed someone - anyone - to lash out his sadness on.
Rin got ill faster due to her trips out of the hospital, her father convinced himself that Len must have forced her with empty promises. So he took revenge.
Right after Len hit him, though, he seemed to wake up from his crazed state and he realized what he had done. However, Len had already hit him. That was an open attack on an officer. If Rin's father would have protested against Len's inevitable punishment, he too would have been captured and severely handled. Not only him, but perhaps the rest of his remaining family as well, if he even had anyone left.
He gave Rin that paper plane of Len's she dropped when her muscles had weakened too much to hold on to it, so that she could die with a memorial of someone dear to her. It was Rin's father's way to lastly beg her for forgiveness and his last request of wishing her a peaceful farewell.
I understand the father's actions. He probably lost his wife, and was about to lose his daughter. He needed someone to blame, to lash out, to hurt. He simply couldn't handle his daughter dying like that. If I were in his shoes, I might have done the same. I wouldn't simply accept my child's fate, I would want revenge.
Can we really blame him?

Problem is, he WAS being a "good nazi". In that place, time and era, it was deemed alright to kill the appointed group that supposedly was to blame for all misfortune. (In this example, that'd be Len - a Jew - and Rin's father - a nazi officer -.)
In their side's perspective, he was doing the right thing.
The only reason why Rin and Len interacted the way they did was because they held the innocence of children. They didn't understand mistreatment against others, as they were still young and untrained in the cruel ways of politics and discrimination.
The adults did know and acted accordingly, and the father did what he thought was right - and that what was in fact deemed right - especially - by the high ranking officers (sometimes even civilians were aware, but didn't mind) at the time.
With this theme hanging around, the father's actions, regret and the end, the message of the song would be "don't put others below yourself, because eventually in death everyone is equal", or amongst those lines (Rin and Len meeting in the Afterlife - even though they probably had different world-views, they were able to look past that and still love one another).
So, yes, in that time and era, with the practically brainwashed hatred for a specific group, a lot of parents would have done the same when confronted with the amount of sorrow, fear and anger Rin's father had been.
I therefore cannot blame the man personally, even though his actions were wrong.
You don't need amazing quality to move the hearts of people, you only need passion.
I think Len is inprisoned because he is Jewish. As you can see the jailer are wearing brown uniforms and when you think of the time of the SS and the others, the german Soldat's were wearing brown uniforms.
