Roofing with Old-fashioned Wood Shakes - The FHC Show, ep 20
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 вер 2024
- Pa Mac demonstrates how to install a wood shingle roof on his new log chicken house. Using old-fashioned tools and simple raw materials, this old time, self-sufficient, and sustainable skill can be practiced by young and old alike on the small farm, and especially by those who enjoy raising chickens. This is episode #20 of The Farm Hand's Companion Show.
Be sure and subscribe to the Farm Hand's Companion channel to keep up with the progress as Pa Mac takes an undeveloped piece of property and turns it into a small subsistence farm. Watch for new episodes as often as Pa Mac can crank 'em out and still run a small farm. (As long as he's alive and kicking, he's most assuredly farming and filming!)

That was great , clearly explained and easy to watch . Can't get better , only a few differences on this side of the puddle , all good .
Great video 👍🇬🇧
Glad to see you put a hard hat on to cut the big oak, now if you would wear some chaps and hearing protection I'd feel a lot better. Great video, thank you... be safe!
Yes! A new FHC episode, just what my morning needed! :) Thanks for the update, the chuckles, the inspiration, and of course the old-timey wisdom. Always a pleasure to watch!

Oh, I'm full of it, I assure you. Thanks for watchin', Honey Hollow Homestead.
Yes, everything will have to wait-- a Pa Mac video! Lol... Sweet relief that that dead oak is down and no one got hurt, well done Pa Mac! Can't wait to see the chicken coop finished!
You, sir, are an inspiration to me. I find thinking on things results in better project outcomes.
Good to see you again, Pa!
I thought you didnt finish the job cause you were in the Pokey ...chuckle and a giggle
Way to stay after it. 👍
I love it. Fix'n to go cut up some red oak firewood. There are some large logs in it that I wanted to do this with. You've definitely nailed my idea home. Thank you.
Great to see you back.
Your detail and schtick has been missed.
Great video! Caint wait to see the chicken house complete
The Chickens are going to be loving that new house.
I am re-watching your video for the umpteenth time. It is a lot more difficult than it looks. I could not imagine doing this type of roofing for a large building. Though I do believe once I get my little shed done, I will have it down. Hopefully my grandkids will be the one redoing the roof. 😂
I've uttered the exact same words about grandkids
I enjoyed this a lot. And, really liked your solution to holding shakes up high so you can get to them.
Your videos are funny and informative.
Our farm had the first lumber mill in Walker co. We still have a small tank that's called the shingle mill tank. That being said.... I've never been so thankful for tin as while watching this video. Even so, Ive always wondered and now I know. Thank you so much for sharing so we could all learn the how.
Always excited for my favorite channel to drop a new, usually long awaited video
That is the most beautiful chicken house I have ever seen!
Hahaha....that face at the end :D Thank you for these homestead craftsman videos.
You're so welcome, Northern Lassie

I appreciate that, Thener!
Great chicken shack with shakes... love your sense of humor!
Thank you, Karen
Very nice, thank-you! Very pleased to catch up with this. Very!
Thank you, John!
Ever heard that if you split your shingles on the wrong moon they will curl up? Old guy I trusted growing up swore this but I never believed it, he also wouldn’t cut his hair except on specific moon phases though, always seemed silly to me but this guy was amazing.
i cant imagine watching a more enjoyable show than this. you always lift me up. thanks so much
That's very kind of you to say, Bobby
@@farmhandscompanion my favorite show was cutting lumber. And it hooked me on your show. Thanks a lot it inspired me. Got my stuff back out an off to the woods I went.
I'm like a 5 year old on Christmas morning when I see that a new FHC video is up and ready to view. As always awesome info with some good wholesome humor. Thanks for the effort to share your knowledge!! You are the man!!

How many years will this roof last? I love it

That was a long time to have to wait to finish the roof. I salute your patience.
Now this is the video I’ve been waiting for!! Love the wood shakes!! I made a few for a well box but would love to make enough for a small barn. Love your videos!!
I appreciate you watchin', Fluty Lick Homestead. (By the way, the name of your channel is perhaps one of my all time memorable favorites)
farmhandscompanion thank you so much!! Your channel helped inspire me to make mine! Fluty Lick is the name of the “holler” we live in here in east Ky.
I love both your channels!
Cant wait to see that cleaned up
This video just made my day. I wish you could publish a new one weekly but I'll take what I can get LOL. One of these days I just gotta get down to Cado and visit y'all. Regards and thanks, Frank

Chainsaw chaps my dude
Thanks again for the information and story, Pa Mac. I'm sure that it was really nerve-racking to cut down that old oak tree. Glad that it went well.
As usual, great video ! Very informative ~
Great video and AWESOME music!!!
Greetings from Denmark, very nice work 🇩🇰
Really enjoyed video, looking forward to seeing more awesome videos in the future, God bless yall
Besides Pa Mac just being generally awesome I'd like to say thank you to the commenters on his channel. There is way more positive comments on here than the UA-cam know-it-alls.
I appreciate all you commenters, too. And you as well, George!
Awesome, a new video!! I found your channel just this week looking for barn builds and was hook immediately. I'm currently building a pole barn/blacksmith shop with board and batten siding and have really enjoyed your videos.
i was wondering what the ladder was 4.... so you can reach ..! chuckle and a giggle
I am so excited you made a new video, you’re my favorite UA-cam channel hands down.
Love it.
I talk entirely too much on my channel and you talk entirely not enough on yours. Lol 😆
Happy trails and thank you for making another video.
Luke
Great to hear from you, Back to the Basics 101. Keep up your good work!
It's a shake brake... And when your making shakes in the hot sun.. You'd be shake'n and bake'n!😁
And goin' to and froe!
@@farmhandscompanion Froe sure my friend 😎
Love you vids! Thanks for sharing.
Please upload more lol I love this channel
Love these... Just wish you were able to produce more frequently. Quality is worth waiting for though. :)
Looks so good! this must have taken some time
I like intro
Thanks for the video its been some time since you posted one :)
sure enjoy your channel. keep it up!
I appreciate that, bawhjth
Exceptional channel! Subscribed :)
Was this one of the longest duration of time between start & finished video? A few seasons came & went it seems... great video! Gives a sense of time to compare too.
Great Work!😀
Are you alive and kicking in Jan 23
As far as can tell; workin' on more shows and other videos
So I guess we forget about all the SSB guidelines, exposed nails and cracks in shingle are allowing leaks, the nails should not be more the an 1'' to 1 1/2'' above the exposure level, keyways need a space between and the part on top keyways should Never align with keyways below, leaks for sure.
The best videos.
But please look into the music..
So I suppose knowin’ the music’s all from homemade instruments wouldn’t make you feel better about the music? farmhandscompanion.com/the-fhc-show/music-of-farm-hands-companion/
@@farmhandscompanion thats a nice twist! Didn't know you made them your self. Maybe some more recordings so it not the same tune over and over.
How dome you don't put a notch or "calf" in the base of the tree when cutting it down. It aids in the felling.
Beautiful! How do the shingles hold up only being nailed at the top like that? Seems like the wind would get under them and loosen them up? (I don't know anything about shake roofs :) )
I've been watching you're channel for a while now someday I wish to start a farm in wisconsin one of my old favorite youtubers died two years ago(Ronnieboy2rdot) so that channels gone a lot of youtube channels I watched when I first started youtube are now gone and if not gone they are clickbaiting for income anyway I found out you're in arkansas welcome to the state of never ending rocks!
I appreciate that, 1984 chevy c30
Brasil
It seems that you're building a chicken retirement home, as those chickens will be too old to lay any eggs by the time you're finished with it LOL!!! Just kidding. I love your videos.
Some of the music in your videos is like listening to someone drag finger nails across a calk board!
Really? All the music? Or just the satirically comical fiddle piece called "The Old Cow, She Crossed the Road" which, like all the tunes on the FHC Show, are available for purchase and download on a number of fine online music outlets like iTunes and Amazon Music, etc.? music.apple.com/us/album/homemade/1213324248
Can anyone tell me the name of the song that begins this beginning? I've had it stuck in my head forever because of pa mac's vids, but I can't find the orginal! I love this version, by the way. Thanks.
The tune is the old classic "Gossec's Gavotte". (My version is "Gossec's Gallyvante") Thanks for watchin', jmhelfri!
Hiya
What are the best woods for shakes
Depends on where you live, Richard.
Red and white oak if you have access to straight grained, very large trees. If you don't, very large pines. Cedars and cypress are other options.
