Build an Old-fashioned Fence for the Garden - The FHC Show, ep 21

  • Опубліковано 5 лют 2020
  • In episode 21 of The Farm Hand's Companion Show, Pa Mac shows how to build a practical and eye-pleasing paling garden fence, using the natural materials around him. Watch as he uses a froe and mallet (along with other old-fashioned hand tools) to split and rive some wood palings to keep chickens and cows out of his garden.
Be sure and subscribe to the Farm Hand's Companion channel to keep up with the progress as Pa Mac takes an undeveloped piece of property and turns it into a small subsistence farm. Watch for new episodes as often as Pa Mac can crank 'em out and still run a small farm. (As long as he's alive and kicking, he's most assuredly farming and filming!)
Also visit www.farmhandsco... to find articles, posts, photographs, and encouragement for today's self-sufficient farm, homestead, or permaculture lifestyle. (And be sure to check out the General Store for Pa Mac's books or DVDs at www.farmhandsco...)

Oh boy, Pa Mac is on! Love the gabion fence posts. As a young lass, I lived in Eastern Washington, home to tons of volcanic rock. It was a well known fact to our friends that my mother's six children were her personal "chain gang" of rock pickers so she could build her garden planters. Hated it back then, but now? What I wouldn't give for that free natural resource!😏😉 So amazing how time changes your perspective. Thanks Pa Mac, I'm starting my day with a smile.😊💕

What a treat to get a new video from Farm Hands Companion! This is the best heritage and building show on UA-cam. I used the pole barn design to much success. I will be doing it again this summer. I love the fences. Do you happen to know if there is a way to make mortise and tenon fences by hand? I can pull it off with a chainsaw, but not by hand. What do you think?

    • @farmhandscompanion

I've seen people make em with the large "framed" brace and bit setups that're normally used with timber frame construction. You could use that contraption, or a large diameter (at least 2 inch) auger coupled with a hatchet to chop out the "in betweens" from two holes.

Loved this!! I just found your channel looking up diy rustic fences, and had to subscribe. No access to natural rocks here, on the Louisiana Gulf coast, but plenty of oak and pecan. Now I just have to figure out if they can be split like this or if I’ll be sawing from now into eternity 🤣 I’m making a fence so that my chickens stay in the backyard with me while I’m out there with them. A couple of them like to go “exploring”, which stresses me out because I love them and everything else wants to eat them lol.

You can find lots of UA-cam vids explaining the science but it’s an ancient technique and a natural method. Hope it helps ya out down the road 😊

Also some swear by ut and some consider it bad but an old timey way of preserving natural wood (once wood is dried out) is to use a 50/50 mix of used engine oil and diesel fuel and paint brush it on. Just thought I’d mention. I love the look of your fence especially with the squash or whatever growing up it.
