      I like Rudy, but there is a serious issue with this video. A 12% exit fee isn't the same as a 12% entrance fee, if you pay 12% up front on a 100$ investment, you pay 12$, if you pay 0% entrance fee on a 100$ investment and it doubles over 10 years to 200$ and you exit with a 12% exit fee, you pay 24$. In other words, a 12% exit fee is actually a 24% fee on the initial investment amount.

    • @Dunctonsteel
      @Dunctonsteel 4 роки тому +12

      @@Demagogue88 Yes, but 24% in 10 years is probably much less than 12% now. Consider 2% fed target inflation rate over a period of 10 years is 21.2%, when compounded yearly. 1.212*1.12= 1.365 or 36.5%. Since you are looking at time appreciating the asset, I think you would want to consider the value of time for an apples to apples comparison.

    Informative video Rudy. I had to break out the Excel sheet to stack up those 2% fees over 10 years. Assuming 8% yield each year, the C class eats 31% of the initial 10K ($3100 in fees).
    Only compounding and calculating fees once annually.
    What a Floppy Taco.
    I'm thinking some of the audience might like to see that stack up in a future finance video.

In Canada our MER's are higher than the states because instead of the lock up periods and up front commission we get paid a 0.66% trailer fee per year from the mutual fund company. On every 100K I get I make around 55$ per month for the life of the investment. My goal is to have 10M under management in 10 years which will be worth 5500$ per month in trailer commissions for myself.

    If you want the compound interest and rate of return of the formula from this video
    for the RTF, this works out.
    M = Money
    F = Fee
    R = Rate
    T = Time
    Rate of return = M((1+R)(1-F))^T
    If you want to know the fee paid
    M(1+R)^T - Rate of return.
    You work out plan B is the best because of the laxed number he presented, if it 1.5 it would be much worse.

    So what Rudy is saying is that no matter which class of investment you choose, the broker always gets their cut of the pie. If you pay more fees upfront, then you pay less later, but if you decide not not to pay the initial fee, you will get hit with a higher yearly fee and end up losing more money overall. No matter which one you choose or how your investment performs, the firm always gets their cut, and they are not required to show the % they automatically take directly on your yearly statement. That is why wall street always wins, they have these accounts set up in such a way that they always get paid, no matter how the investment performs for the client. Very great video, learned a lot from it. Thanks for sharing.

      I'm no floppy taco expert but I'd guess that cardboard will be treated as taxable income while all the other products will be taxed at long term capital gains. Thus total fees for cardboard will be 40-50% when state/federal taxes are added to paypal/Ebay fees. Comparably class C (take it the bum) shares will be 20% + 15% long term capital gains.

    One caveat is that small buyers (ie. consumers) will likely not be able to avoid sales tax the way a distributor or larger buyer can. So that can take between 4% to 8% as a cost of entry.

  • @tisseurdereves6414
    @tisseurdereves6414 4 роки тому +2

    Hello Rudy.
    Very interesting video, but I'm confused over some values. I'm wondering if we're not missing two elements here : comparing entry and ongoing fees with outgoing ones, and the ten-year evolution of an A/B/C investment vs an MTG item. I'm not in the finance world, not knowledgeable about any of this, just feeling confused after watching your explanations and doing some simple math.
    First, you say that when selling the box, the seller will lose roughly 12% of its value (8:11). But that is the value of the item at the moment it's sold, which looks at its final price, not the original one, right ? Therefore, it is likely to be above 12% of $10k, more like 12% of $20k, supposing that the box has doubled in value in 10 years (roughly 7% yearly increase). Correct ?
    Which brings me to the second point.
    Suppose I buy today a box for $10k. Let's assume it grows 7-8% a year, which doubles its original price once the ten years are over. The final fee cost is going to be $2 400 (12% from the $20k price tag for ebay and paypal fees).
    Now let's take that same sum for investment A. I'll keep it for 10 years. Entry fee shaves off 5%, so I'm down $500. Then year after year, I pay a 1% fee. Is that fee based on the original $10K ? Does it add up over the years based on the growing value of my investment ? So if five years after my original $10k are worth $15k, does the interest account for $150 ?
    Let's assume my investment grows by 8% a year (I took the 7-8% growth estimate you mention at the end of the video as a basis for this).
    Year 0 : $9 500 (10k minus the 500$ entry fee)
    After a year : $10 260 - 103 interest
    After 2 years : $11 081 - 111
    After 3 years : $11 967 - 120
    After 4 years : $12 925 - 129
    After 5 years : $13 959 - 140
    After 6 years : $15 075 - 151
    After 7 years : $16 281 - 163
    After 8 years : $17 584 - 176
    After 9 years : $18 991 - 190
    After 10 years : $20 510 - 205
    Supposing yearly interest of 1% is based on the value of the share the same year, the fees add up to $1 486 + the original 500 (5% entry fee), which makes it $1 986, less than the $2400 fee paid for the MTG item. Now if there is no outgoing fee, the MTG item will beat this easily.
    If I do the math for the B type at 1.5%, I get to a total of $2 218, which is a bit more but still less than 12% of the final price of the MTG item.
    For type C, it starts to hurt. After 10 years, interests add up to almost $3k. But I assume that the Timmy getting into type C will likely not wait that long to cash in or move to another investment.
    This is quite simplistic, as it assumes a steady and equal growth for all the products. But still, the numbers don't add up with your conclusion. Am I missing something ?
    Now boxes from 10 years ago (2010) are :
    Worldwake : 650€
    Rise of the Eldrazi : 595€
    Magic 2011 : 232€
    Scars of Mirrodin : 366€
    Which, supposing you have the means to flip them at those prices, still seem an excellent investment, way above the 7-8% yearly increase mentioned by Rudy.
    Sorry for the long post and the number salad, have a potato everyone :)

    Doesnt sales tax count as an initial cost? In my part of canada, it's 13%, so 13% on that 10k is pretty big :\

      @@asteria9963 I think it should be at least mentioned and it is relevant to the subject of the talk. He mentions the extra 5% cost for the A class, taxes should be in that slot for MTG. You are not making those taxes back, they are essentially an initial fee.

    Thank you for the lecture, and huh. I did not realize, before this that is, what investing in mutual funds means. That 2008 analogy really helped, where they basically "pay themselves." This content is really helpful, for those "not trying to be the hero."

    That is the real problem, that they don't even show the fees. Because maybe the fees are reasonable for what you are looking at, but how can you determine it and compare to your other choices if they are hidden?

    Whether fees get listed depends on the advisor group. Some list and break up their fees annually/quarterly/monthly/etc. You have to go in and look at the activity for the account the fund is in, but it gets listed.
    You can start getting really angry as an investor when doing TVM calculations with and without fees. It's partly why I couldn't do investing fulltime as a career, I couldn't separate out the emotions enough to flesh out a diversified portfolio.

    MTG does have a fee on the way in, sales tax. And the cap gains tax on cashing out collectibles is as high as 28%.

    For those of you watching in the future:
    Core Set M11 (10 years ago) is currently selling in Nov 2020 for $300. Assuming an $80 buy-in, that's a profit of $220 or 275%. Minus a worst-case 20% sell-out fee, that's still 250% profit in 10 years, meaning a yearly profit of 25%.
    And that's just for a run-of-the-mill Core Set. I'm not even gonna mention Worldwake or Scars of Mirrodin.
