Rudy, you want media/data safes. The insulation in a standard gun safe will protect against a fire, but will also release a ton of moisture onto all of your cardboard in the event of a fire. That precious cardboard will be effectively stuck & melted together. Get a safe for media storage which will protect from both fire and be insulated to also keep humidity in check. My 2 cents.

I saw Rudy from Alpha Investments at a grocery store in Jacksonville the other day. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.
He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”
I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying.
The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.
When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

Very good advice. I appreciate the bit about insurance and how difficult it is to basically not have a corporation screw you in the end. Protect your house in case of the end of the world, for specialized things like Magic, do your best to protect it in a security vault, get cameras, keep Mother Nature out, so on. I had the same thought processes when I bought my first house and stored my expensive collection.

  • @vaderwashere365
    @vaderwashere365 4 роки тому

Agreed, glad you were able to address this Rudy. Covering opportunity costs, storage space, storage costs, securities costs, etc. Is something that your average viewer does not consider. I actually doubt your average Patreon member considers the related costs. When people bring up the single card (RL, graded Alpha) vs sealed product, many people don't consider all the costs to compare apples to apples. For me, my restriction is 1 closet in my office for all my collection (graded, EDH, Legacy, Modern, etc.), as the wife doesn't care about the unregulated, uninsured returns I have gotten from MTG cards that can be stolen or burned in an instant (yes, even a 2 hour fireproof safe has issues). So I collect graded Alpha and graded Reserved List because it takes up far less space than sealed product and is way more fun to show my MTG friends. MTG investments have been good overall for many of us, just different restrictions for different people.

On top of all the sneaky sub limits, exclusions, endorsements, and general lava claw reach arounds in an insurance policy, everyone should also remember that the whole point of insurance is to make the group facing the risk pay more to cover their risks than the risks actually cost if they occur uncovered. So if you and 1,000 people buy magic card policies, they have a formula to figure out the average number of those collections that will get wiped out, and you'll all pay more than that would cost to replace.
In other words even with no security and a policy that will actually cover you (haha), there's a decent chance you're still financially better off just rebuying your whole collection if it's destroyed than you'd be having the policy. This is why more and more policy types are trying to get the government to force you to buy their policies, because the policies on their own merits simply aren't worth buying.

Most LGS around me IF they have a display case with expensive cards ($75-100+) do NOT even take them out of their safes to put in display during business hours. They stay in their at all times until somebody wants to look at one.
The display case just has jewel cases with printed photos of the cards + price and condition.
This seems to be the ideal approach: although it means in order to show even 1 card from safe you gotta open it. So EVERY owner of an LGS should be concealed carrying IMO. That way if somebody tries the ol' armed robbery you're packing and don't lose your stuff still.

I had actually been going back and forth on the idea of insurance on my collection for a while. I don't invest though, just my own personally on hand collection but its good to hear your thoughts. It made me think a bit more on this front.

There are other reasons for not making an insurance:
    - Too high prices for the insurance, the same with a safe at the bank. It costs you only money.
    - If something happens the insurance will try to rip you off
    - The insurance wants every 3 months a list of what you have. With that list they will rise and rise your monthly payments.
    - There were several cases in the last decade where the insurance man is a thief, but he checks it out and sends you his crew to empty you.
Hollywood made films about that, so why show an unknown person all the wealth you have?
    - The insurance wants for example when you have over 5k of Silver/Gold Coins at home that you have to install an Alarm System.
That will cost you also extra money on top every month.
    - The insurance will say that at a specific point you have to rent a better/more secure place or they will raise/cancel the contract.
Over all in out times it makes no sense to make an insurance contract. You will lose in every possible way.
The best thing is to secure it by yourself and don´t tell people/show pictures of the amount of stuff you have.
This is like holding up a sign "Here is something worth it, come and try to get it."
What no one knows, won´t bring any trouble in the house.

Great video. I stack gold and silver, and would give the same advice for safes. Big ass bolted safe is the only way to go. Home owner's insurance doesn't cover precious metals either.

Damn, Rudy hitting hard there at the end.
Don't invest unless you got your life together, actual great advice

Yeah. Tell that to the 17 year olds who bought Bitcoins in 2011?
Sometimes a little bit of speculation goes a long way. I'm not talking Rudy style invests, but a small hundred or two a month is no different than throwing it in an IRA.

You might want to invest in a dog at some point. Even if it is tiny. If they smell their owners fear they will react and they don’t understand guns.
If you collection gets big and you don’t need to access it right away invest in time based doors, which open after 24 hours (obviously with a second key).
Invest in security that shows up if you don’t call them prior to opening your safe.
Rule number 1: never tell anyone how much worth you have stacked. The good thing is you cannot liquidize large or exotic collections easily, so rudys collection is worth at least 10 times more to him than some oceans 17 crew that have to find a buyer for the whole crap.

Not bolts, wedge anchors, you could use epoxy and concrete bolts, but wedge anchors are 100 times easier. Most G word "safes" are garbage, lots of fancy carpet and paint where you could get a AMSEC or other TL-15 for similar money. As far as insurance, if you are paying $100 a month for a collectors policy you are getting hosed. 50K of collectables insurance should run about $30 a month, this is from an A rated insurance company.

Rudy hit on a very important subject that I feel should be talked about more.
If you are in a situation where it would be very taxing on your income or living situation. Do not invest in magic cards. Seriously work on yourself. Build up your savings. Start a 401k or IRA. Get a stock portfolio started. Go back to school or learn a trade. Work on yourself!
Magic is a great product and game. Nothing else like it. I love the game as a player and I enjoy doing small investments (around $10,000) of sealed product. But I didnt do this until I first finished my degree, bought a house, and started a retirement plan. Please take yourself seriously and invest in yourself before you invest in magic.

Yea, Im prettty sure the owner of my LGS lives directly above his store. Its a converted house where the entire main floor is a self contained unit, with a seperate-entrance apartment upsatairs.
An inside job, at a warwhouse type place is prob going to take at least a half-hour to pull off. Thats assuming the crook has a pretty direct means of entry, and knows where the pallet jacks or forklifts are stored. Even at that they'd have to be hustling, it would prob take closer to an hour to pull the job off to the point where youre driving away in a loaded cube van high-fiving your friends that you just ruined little Rudys college fund...

Recently a burglar tried to rob the place I work at, they failed. But now I feel like I want to know some Rudy stories of him going full SWAT with a shotgun and his floppy lucky taco hat on a pauper thief.
