McKeesport, PA just north of Pittsburgh is down horrendous right now. I saw a UA-cam video driving through McKeesport & it looked worse than most neighborhoods in Detroit/Flint/St. Louis.
Thank you for making this video. I've lived here all my life and this nearly perfectly encapsulates my home. I hope you got to go into the Westside Market, it's one of the most beautiful buildings in the entire state along with the Heinen's built into that old bank.
I've lived in to very outer most suburbs of Cleveland, I absolutely love Cleveland with all its pluses and minus . The music and food scene is diverse, there's literally something for everyone.
Westpark is one of the only Cleveland neighborhoods that have stayed steady and my entire life. I really didn’t appreciate that neighborhood until I got into my 30s… the houses are beautiful and the neighborhood has a ton of culture and character. I wish more of the neighborhoods held on like westpark did. The only other neighborhood I feel has stayed up is little italy in the eastside.
We relocated to the eastern 'burbs of CLE about a decade ago. Cleveland rocks! The city, the metro parks, the arts and music scene. It's a great place.
When I first moved to Cleveland for college, I was a broke student trying to make ends meet. One of my go-to moves was selling clothes at Avalon Exchange, a thrift shop. One day, I stuffed my backpack full of clothes and took the bus to the shop, hoping to make some quick cash. Unfortunately, they didn’t want most of my stuff, so my backpack was still bursting at the seams when I left. That’s when things got interesting. The bus I’d originally taken wasn’t running anymore, so I had to find another route. This led me to a bus stop much farther out, and before I knew it, I was walking on the outskirts of East Cleveland. I remember looking around and noticing how the neighborhood felt different. I didn’t realize exactly where I was until later, when someone told me about East Cleveland’s reputation. Thankfully, nothing happened, but looking back, I definitely wandered into one of the rougher parts of town without realizing it. It was one of those “rookie in the city” moments I’ll never forget.
Living in downtown Cleveland, everyday when I drive home, the split in the view between the Steelyard and the grey and smoke billowing and downtown on the horizon shining, it always reminds me of the Great Gatsby and the grey area in between.
Steelyard was a great idea… I still hope one day it can be better. TBH I’d go to that Walmart over Brookparks any day and that target is better than 117th
I worked for an italian boss who made it in cement, and have heard stories right from the horses mouth. They're probably laughing because they know people are buried in the foundations Italians poured.
My father’s name was Joseph Zuppero. A Sicilian . American born raised in Cleveland served his country in Vietnam and Korea. He was known as “Joe bananas” . He used to sell fruits from a cart downtown back in the day as well as a 436 Teamster.
@CharlesCarter. thank you. I don’t recognize the name unfortunately. Paventi also was my cousin in believe he was under indictment back in the 80s not sure why as i was too young and a female not privy to family politics.
That’s crazy how fast they put up that building next to west side market. I feel like I was just there and it was not. granted I live on the east side so I don’t make my way over there too often
Great videos man. Love your style of content. I was lucky enough to do a video with Peter Santenello in Massachusetts which I learned a lot from. Hope to make some content like yours. Keep up the good work, safe travels, and Merry Christmas/happy holidays!
Old men at beginning talking down on Italians. It's a shame. Still eating soggy, sad waffles together. Very Sad. Little Italy Cleveland is best kept secret in USA.
Thank you so much for showcasing Cleveland! You should come back and show the good things happening on the East side of Cleveland (NOT to be confused with East Cleveland) Ohio City & Tremont are on the West Side. There’s a very interesting history on why the West Side is very developed while the East Side (where most of the Black residents reside) is not.
You drove through those neighborhoods! Now I ask you, I am 45 and lived in this city my whole life. Would you buy one of those condemned houses in any of those neighborhoods, when they want $60k for the house that needs a $100k in work, and has a $100k in liens and back taxes owed on the title and deeds to the house owed on it the buyer is responsible for. All that, and even if you bought it and paid all that and did all that work, the house is still only valued at $30k in a neighborhood where all the other houses are only worth $7k, and no sane person would walk around during the day, let alone at night!? The whole city is owned, corrupt, and stays that way, because rich and wealthy, that own everything, including the Cleveland and Cuyahoga land banks, all bank owners, who are also corrupt ward politicians, along with corporations like the Cleveland Kill Me Hospital, use those properties to launder government subsidy money, or use them to write off tax depreciations, so they can launder money from other businesses.. Whole city is fucked
Ive been living in Cleveland ohio my whole life (almost 35 years) Cleveland is definitely making a comeback! I had to also move to the suburbs! CLEVELAND ROCKSSSSSS
Cody was a bit dramatic but for the most part got a lot correct. Biggest thing that stuck out was when he said intro was a dirt lot before it was built… it was a plaza that had businesses in it. I’m very proud to be born and raised here… although it’s getting harder and harder to want to stay.
Cleveland is making a slow but gradual comeback with other industries coming to prosper (Cleveland Clinic is an example). Another thing not talked about much is climate change regarding Cleveland's future. The city is in an area of the country that would comparatively experience minimal effects from global warming (still some for sure, but not as bad as other states), is near one of the largest freshwater systems in the world, and could be a hot spot for climate "refugees" by the end of the century. That being said, I believe corruption and mismanagement still plague the city as these residents have talked about in their interviews.
Worked in and around Lakeview (the public housing complex you showed) for about a year. As an outsider, I felt nothing but welcomed there in a world I wasn’t familiar with at all. Unfortunately Lakeview was doomed to fail from its inception due to its location near some very toxic industrial properties. The residents have dealt with inequitable air quality and quality of life as the complex continues to decline while plans are formulated to rebuild (which is also going to potentially displace long term residents during construction). The difference on one side of the Shoreway (the bridge) to the other couldn’t be more stark. If I knew you guys were coming I could’ve tried to help get some residents from Lakeview to share their story with you.
Family was from 55th & Superior, back when that was the Slovenian/Croatian part of Slavic Village. Cleveland's still the most underrated city in the midwest. The suburbs are great, the exurbs are even better and we have an excellent metroparks network and some of the best schools in the country.
Cincinnati has all its major sports teams downtown, along with Milwaukee, Detroit, Pittsburgh,Baltimore, Philadelphia, Minneapolis, Indianapolis, Nashville, St Louis, Seattle
Downtown Cleveland with its theatre district, stadiums/arenas, and Jacks Casino is pretty nice. I went once. I ate at Mabel's BBQ, and Blue Point Grille. The Westside of Cleveland is nice. Between that and Lakewood you can see gentrification. If they move the Browns stadium though a lot of customers will be taken away.
Instead of saying at least “at least we’re not Detroit” start saying “at least we’re not Youngstown” you will have a whole new appreciation for the city then before
St. Louis had all big three car factories plus McDonnell Douglas and Boeing with Anheuser Busch. We also have Monsanto, Purina, Enterprise, and Express Scripts. This made me think of that. There's alot more but all the car factories are gone. GM moved to the outskirts of Metropolitan St. Louis so it's kinda still here.
All the yuppies that are praising it should MOVE TO CLEVELAND and see how long your car lasts or you get car jacked or robbed...I got all of the above and tapped out and left !
Thanks for showing the gentrification, all the yuppies and gay people, nothing wrong with gay people, but there part of the gentrification, displacement, those homes and condos are mostly cheap construction, selling for 300 and 400 thousand , thanks again for the bike lanes throughout the middle and lower middle class neighborhoods. That no one uses except in those small pretentious neighborhoods. I really like to hear these bewildered new professionals complain when they get robbed, or they come home and some homeless guy is aggressively panhandling them, if you move into a bad area expecting the natives to stop being natives, you deserve what you get....
Same happened in Baltimore..the yuppies moved in and look down on the locals. It's crazy because it was the blue collar, locals who kept the neighborhoods decent for decades. Which gave these yuppies a safe place to move into while kicking out the old!
Cleveland isn't experiencing a rebirth at all, there are some new gentrification yuppie, liberal areas, but the vast majority is horrible, stop lying to people
100 % Agree. I was born in the west suburbs in 79. Graduated college 2002 went south. Came back home in 2007. Things declined in the suburbs badly. I went far south. Much nicer elsewhere.
I live 30 miles east of Cleveland. I wouldn't go into that shithole without a police escort. It's hilarious, these libtards move right into the hood and start rehabbing old shitty properties. While being surrounded by the ghetto. And none of them carry guns. They think their ring doorbell cameras will keep them safe. Haha
All the new building they have built by w65th and Detroit rd. Are so ugly! They could have kept the look of the architecture instead of making it look like a futuristic slum . It will be that in 20 years im sure.
I love having discovered this channel and looking forward to more. But - I don't mean to be negative - Cleveland is a lot worse than you're trying to show here.
It is a great place to go for people who can not afford their high priced car payments any longer because just park on the street and your car or SUV will probably be stolen and never seen again !
I've lived everywhere in my 57 years on earth, and I'll finish my life in Cleveland. Love this city, and love its people.
I grew up on Denison ave and happy I never have to enter that S hole, I live in Parma now its not perfect but its better than Cleveland.
@@Rick-k3p As a kid we could walk down Denison to Harvard and eat at The Country Grill by 66th....Now not without body armor and a tank.
Glad you feel that way!!

Wow an old man just perfectly described the pos industrial service industry transition. He did this better than a yale economist.

Will you make another vid about Asia Town, the East part of Cleveland, the Clinic, Little Italy, and the Case Western Reserve areas?
Been to Chinatown.
Two Asian restaurants and a noodle house do not constitute a Chinatown.
More black people than Asians.
Living in downtown Cleveland, everyday when I drive home, the split in the view between the Steelyard and the grey and smoke billowing and downtown on the horizon shining, it always reminds me of the Great Gatsby and the grey area in between.
The gray smoke is the stolen cars burning that you see off in the distance...Don't fool yourself, NO steel mills running in Cleveland anymore friend.
I like how he mentioned the Steelyard Commons but did not take him there........
its just too much beauty at once

Yes it was sort of weird the way he said Irish neighborhood, Germans, and begrudgingly (his tone of voice) a few Italians.
