Thanks for biting the bullet for us. I canceled my pre order and I will stick with my index.
97,92 degree HFOV is a +25% jump over the reverb G2s 78 degrees. Sounds like that should feel like a big improvement.
@@K11... There is something wrong with his measurement of FOV. I have both Quest 2 and Reverb G2. I use them daily, and love them both. The G2 mostly for flight sims and racing games though. The G2 clearly has better FOV than the Quest 2, yet in this review he rates Quest 2 with better FOV than G2. That is so incorrect, and no way G2 has as low as 78 degrees. One of the main reasons I am keeping and using G2 for simulators and car games is just because it has noticeably better FOV than the Quest 2! Also, head over to Reddit to read comments about this review and how the FOV was measured. I can not make any judgements about his methods - though I can say he is totally absolutely wrong about FOV on the G2 and Quest 2. So maybe he is wrong about FOV on the Vive Pro 2 too - but I haven’t tested Vive Pro yet so I can not say for sure. But forget his G2 and Quest 2 ratings.
What headset would you say has the best sweet spot and edge to edge clarity just now? I have the G2 and it has a very small sweet spot for me, but Q2 is very good
@@K11... Yes but vertical FOV is worse than Reverb G2, Valve Index and even Oculus Quest 2. It's just plain stupid what HTC have done there.
Exactly what I was afraid of, its a vive pro with a new screen. They made no effort to correct previous issues of the original model
hi matteo!!
My issue with the original Pro was the horizontal fov. Looks like it's still bad of not worse.
People saying wait for the index 2 yet us Australians can't get the normal index after two years of if being released .-.
Excellent detailed review. Great job providing such a complete analysis. Thank you
Thanks for this review! Helped me choose between valve index and vive pro 2!
What did you choose?
Thanks for the honest review! Sticking to my vive pro wireless and reverb g2
Cant wait! Curious how it holds up vs the G2 and what the steam render resolution is/performance is. Gotta see if it's worth the upgrade, looking forward to it!
R.I.P HTC.
Like a candle in the wind.
Can i ask you what is the fov of vive pro 2 for you, if used with small vr cover for big fov? Did you try that too?
Could you please measure and write, what is steam ss 100% resolution for every mode in vive utility. Please, please!))
So, given your experience with the Droolon Pi, do you think the F2 (and F2 for older Vive models that aren't the Pro Eye) will even have improved tracking?
So what's the weight of the headset in comparison to the Vive pro 1?
Please, after publication, if it is not in the video - write steam vr rendering resolution (with 100% SS), with using display port 1.4 with DSC and with using some older display port, or without DSC. Wanna know, what upscaling mode will be used on older videocards.
Which version of TESTHMD are you using?
YESSSSSSSSSSS. So conflicted about upgrading from my index. Can't wait for the premiere.
Hold out JB3. I suspect better things are on the horizon, even if not immediately/without firm dates. Worst is to regret a purchase/have to resell etc.
So. If I primarily want to play PCVR (DCS, MSFS, Spave Sim etc, but would also like the wireless option, which is better, the Quest 3 or Vive Pro 2? I'm looking for best image quality and least latency on a computer that's not running a 4090. But, there might be other things to think about as I've never owned a VR headset before.
Hello there man! I'm pretty happy of the video you made, it's very detailed! I own the HTV VIVE 1 (NOT PRO) with the poor resolution and big screen door effect but after a while of getting used to it if you forget about the screen door effect you kind of not see it anymore until you remember and just see it again=). I can't tell from your video at which angle off the center of the screen the image becomes distorted/unfocused, but on my HTV VIVE 1 it's very blurry and can barely understand any text which always forces me to look straight at a thing to much clearly see it, so yes, now I understand that the HTV VIVE still has this plague even on PRO 2 (dunno about PRO 1) which forces you to look straight at stuff to see it. 120 deg helps with almost nothing if you can't understand what's there. You can have even 350 deg and still does nothing useful if only 20 degrees FOV is what you can clearly have clear.
I like the fact that you are genuine in your thoughts and freely tell what you see and understand without any fear, which I appreciate!
Thanks!
Can we ask you to also measure sweetspot and fov with facial interface removed and eyes as close to displays as possible? It would show how big fov and sweet spot would be after doing frankenmod...
Thx for your review 👍
I really like your honest opinion on the lense review.
HP reverb G2 have exact same issue. Things are only sharp in the tiny area of the center which is very disappointing for me as well.
@@generalgrevous1984 Do you have the Vive Pro 2, so that you can confirm who is the one, who is right?
If I buy index 2.0 headset that is a product almost two years ago... what other choices do I have if I want a strong and up-to-date headset, pimax?
Vice pro 2 with index controllers = best VR experience
Hey Thomas , Did you get any Acceptable Results with a 6 mm pad , and if you did, Was there any Distortion ...I share the same IPD as You , But Thinking about the Artisan over VP2
see my new video
Can't wait. I think this channel is the first to have this in hand.
great review - looks like the same issue as with the G2 - really small sweet spot of sharpness in the middle and then blurs quickly - they really need to sort this. The quest 2 I have has a much larger area of sharpness across nearly the whole lens
Thanks for the review Voodoo!
When you get a working unit, please test it with the wireless module and make a video about the experience. I read that it will only work in 90Hz mode, and with very reduced resolution currently. They are reportedly working on a new firmware for the wireless module to support higher resolution but it would be still lower than what you get with the cable. Your first hand impressions will be much appreciated.
I'm sure you will, but here's a request to please test the horizontal FOV and stereo overlap (let's find out if they sacrificed this to get a large FOV). Also, a comparison to the HP Reverb G2's colors, contrast, sharpness, and SDE would be really put this headset into perspective.
The fov feels like I'm peaking over a fence, with most of the vertical fov being above my eyes fov and if you try to center your eyes in the lense it 1. Loses the sweet spot and 2. Doesn't allow the strap to tilt properly to fit. Basically unusable for me. I'll give it another day or two but I have my return setup and ready to swap it for index
Does it have USB ports on the head set or no
would u recommend it over the HP G2 for using mainly with DCS?
Yes
What a great informative review, thank you. 🤗🤗
Regarding the blur when off center, any chance HTC's software is forcing some kind of foviated rendering, it's almost what it looks like?
I had exactly the same issue with the Reverb G2, and made me start worrying about whether I would like how foveated rendering would look in the future. I know it's not the same thing, but I really need a near edge-to-edge clarity (whatever the resolution) to really enjoy VR.
Did you use 466.47 driver? It is required for DSC to work.
Yes I always use the newest driver
I was hoping this would be the new king of sim racing. So on the vive pro 2 you can't buy just the headset?? it wont work without base stations and controllers? I never use my g2 controllers. I love my g2 and wondering if there is even anything out there better for sim racing. Thanks
You would need a single basestation 1.0 (around 60$-100$ used), but yeah it would not work without one. Controllers aren't necessary.
@@SLAiNTRAX thanks for the info! Gonna wait for some more reviews yet before changing from the reverb g2
There is a button on the side of the hmd to use as a select control for software like steam vr home and the likes so for sim use you should be good to go as said 1 hmd and 1 base station... ide buy used from cex and save some money around 60 or 70 bucks price wise each ... Good luck
Any idea what app he's usig to measure the FOV? wanna try it on my end
It's probably Real Or Virtual available in Steam workshop. steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1359389601
Probably RoV from steam workshop.
Thanks. Really good, objective, and honest review
So how does the FOV compare to OG Vive and Vive Pro 1? I have the Vive Pro 1 with wireless. I was hoping this would be a good upgrade.
When you calculate diagonal FOV, the Vive Pro 2 is perhaps bigger, but due to the small vertical FOV, it feels so strange, like Kyle Ren helmet..
@@voodoodevr-en that makes sence since the lenses look flat on top and bottom and wide.
I saw some other review regarding field of view to get this fixed you need to replace the front foam, to get the real field of view. So not sure why they have build in that thick thing, maybe to keep the light out.
GREAT JOB, THANKS FOR THIS .....
Can u use Vive 2 on my i7 saba GTX 1080ti 32 GIG ram. I have the very first vive, so do you think I can benefit from upgrading and can I take advantage with my set up.
Warm regards 👍🏼👍🏼🇦🇺🇦🇺
Yes, you can, GTX 1080 ti and I7 are 2 very good specs.
I trust your reviews more than anyone else's, and what you're saying is what I expected, so I didn't pre-order. Thanks.
Thanks for the honest review! Is it worth it to upgrade from the original Vive pro?
Yes
this is my favorite VR headset review channel
Killer review, thank you. Bet HTC is regretting sending you a review unit 😂. Any thoughts on the eye tracking module, VRSS 2, and foveated rendering in general? It feels like it’s finally happening this year, but I’ve now lost hope in getting a good solution from HTC.
And given The Verge only gave it a 4/5, they probably won't be getting anymore units either.
Looking forward to it!
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts also, if you plan on sharing some content on it 🤙
I got mines today but didn't change my license to perpetual so im sending back to get the license updated
sounds like the lens effect is like one of those scenes in a movie where the person is on drugs and the peripheral vision starts blurring and fading away
Looking forward to seeing how the HP Reverb G2 Omnicept performs! Foveated rendering seems to be the way to go - and the headset has an updated head strap.
Thank you so much for your honest review. For me one of the best in Vr you tubers
Cool! Favorite VR reviewer gets new toy to review!
This is a great video, very in-depth. Thank you. The small sweetspot is the worst part IMO.
When its not even possible for a well known youtube VR reviewer to tell us what resolution hes looking at the game is up. HTC are taking the piss with this headset. Its like a fake premium VR headset.
Wow!!! Feel like taking a day off work for this
when you said in the previous video that the pimax 8kx was your new favorite headset, i knew that Vive pro 2 was crap... haha of course i knew you had it for review
Can you do a through the lenses comparison with the G2 ? For me the only downside of the G2 is the fov - are you saying that the Vive Pro 2 is better or worse fov than G2 ?
G2 has smallest FOV, Vive Pro 2 is better. However it feels very strange that the vertikal FOV is so small...
@@voodoodevr-en I'm wondering if that'll change if you use the thinner face pad? Looks like you only used the stock foam pad that everyone knows is god awful for fov.
@@eddiepark9069 Why would HTC upgrade screens and lenses then give such terrible foam pads that cost pennies to upgrade but reduce FOV more than all their upgrades increase. Foam pads are not the issue. For any headset ever created. The G2 Frankenfov bullshit is just homeopathy for VR users and UA-camrs lookign to make a buck.
What EXACTLY do they mean by 20- or 30-series GPUs are needed for "Full Resolution Mode"? So what resolution do I get with my 1080 Ti (which is also on the approved list)? Test a 10-series card, please!
I dont have 10 Series card
You need a card that supports DP 1.4 with DSC. There's very few cards outside of the RTX 2000, 3000, and AMD 5000 and 6000 cards that support this. Without DSC, the bandwidth required to push the Vive Pro 2, to the highest resolution is more bandwidth than DP (display port 1.4) can push.
@@michaeldeford1335 Their spec page says the 10-series cards work, but that you need 20 or 30 series for "Full Resolution Mode". Without any explanation what will happen with a 10 series by comparison. I need the numbers.
@@Darrylx444 It seems, that max "transfered to HMD" resolution, that you can have, will be 3672 * 1836 (and then it will be upscaled to the HMD's native in the HMD itself)(because next resolution from options, 4896*2448 couldn't be send through DP without DSC even with 90 Hz (( not enought throughput)
(I took this information from the options screen on the video)
@@Darrylx444 hmm I thought Display Stream Compression supporting gpu is needed for the 120hz ...not sure the resolution will be different if the video card doesn't support dsc .....but yes it needs to be clarified
FOV prob - replace cover with VR cover - prob solved
Sweet spot prob - has anyone successfully replaced the lenses on the pro2 and solved the issue ?
I have pre-ordered. So I hope I will not disturb the order 😁
Hope it's not a disappointment
@@Seanweekhaizhen Exactly, personally I'd cancel and wait for more reviews first. This review is enough for me to cancel completely. But then again, I wouldn't have been choosing this product in the first place.
Good luck @Michal.
Geez ,cancelling ... Thank you for this
Ok, let’s wait then for the Index 2...
agree
Still use Index over Quest 2 and HP G2 - both disappointed
You should try running the HTC software at the highest resolution and check if the sweetspot gets bigger. :)
I did and it's not!
The sweet spot is a physical limitation of the lenses. The only way to make it better is to replace the lenses. It was possible with the original Vive Pro, but it doesn't look there will be any way to do it with the Pro 2.
That was "Brutal"...Hahaha. Good job with the detail. As expected (if your "press" unit wasn't broken/breaking since you received it), that's HTC business as usual. But let's see how the other unit looks, once you receive it/them (your own and/or new "press" unit).
Is the cable identical to vive pro?
No
How much time has HTC had to engineer a microphone solution that doesn't make popping sounds from your breath? It's been almost 5 years since the problems were first reported! Either they are extremely ignorant of the problem, or they simply don't care. And this is a headset supposedly suited for BUSINESS use, which means it should be good for holding business meetings in VR? Ridiculous.
HTC is too busy counting money to make any real improvements on any tech.. Plus, all their decent VR tech was designed by Valve anyway.
perfect Review. thanks.
He ran it outputting to the panel in upsampling mode at nearly HTC Vive 1 resolution. This review is flawed and should be redone. He seems to have rushed it to get it out first.
how do you know that?
So you’re saying it has roughly the same vertical fov as Reverb G2 but 20 degrees wider Fov (so it looks kinda widescreen) and has 12 million pixels vs the G2s 9 million? Sounds pretty good.
Yes
So it isnt that the fov is tiny on the Vfov but that for you due to face and head shape you only get 78 vfov on the g2 where i get 94 vfov you get 78 so for us it is a lot better. And maybe you having the face shape you have has made it look like you are using ultrawide 21/9 so maybe i will take that into consideration
omg cant wait
When does the vive pro 2 arrive for people that pre ordered it, i cant find it anywhere
It starts shipping on June 3rd
@@mariorossi9300 thx :)
@@mariorossi9300 Eww that's so late. No one's getting there headset on June 4th.
@@zr1129 mine says it will be here tuesday
Holy shit. Are you sure you had the glasses relief slider as close to the lenses as possible when when measuring FOV?
Was wondering the same thing. Not only are they larger lens, they are dual lens. The fact that the FOV is smaller and worse than the Vive Pro in this review makes zero sense. If true, HTC really has gone off the deep end.
yes it as as close to the lenses as possible!
I can't deny that I'm tempted to get one, but I've had an Index since they launched and it's still meeting my needs. Not having any screen door effect would be nice though. From the reviews I've watched/read that's the only benefit this has over the Index.
i ordered this thing first day it went on sale and just sold my index on ebay. really kicking myself in the nuts after seeing all these reviews
Same here, I would love to see the SDE, before I would get rid of my index, its been a camp all this time.
Thank you very much for your honest review, saved me a great deal of money. I was hoping I could get some advice?
I'm a recent convert to VR. I jumped in with the Quest 2 because at 300 bucks I figured even if I didn't like it it wasn't a significant loss. Turns out I love it, but with a catch: I mostly play PC sims (DCS, Elite Dangerous, ect) via link cable. After the initial 'wow' factor wore off I find myself more and more annoyed by the lower FOV, the reduced frame rates (rtx 3070, amd 5800x), and the just general 'smeared' or 'blurry' quality of everything. It's still awesome, and if this is the best it can be for now then I'll deal with it. However I've been thinking about laying out some serious cash for the Valve Index. The wider FOV is obviously appealing, and from what I've read it seems like it might help (only a little) with some FPS issues as the video card doens't have to compress the feed. Furthermore from talking to some Index owners they say that even though the resolution of the image is lower the quality of image may actually be higher because it doesn't have the compression issues, hopefully helping with the blurriness. From a purely PCVR perspective, for someone looking for the best combination of FOV, image clarity, and least amount of hit to system resources, is the Index an actual upgrade?
From the Quest 2, of course its an upgrade. Try to get a Index with the best Graphics card you can find.. if you can wait though.. I believe Index 2 or something, is just around the corner. But for the best here and now, at this point in time. Index.
I have both the Index and Vive Pro. I prefer the Vive Pro for wireless/OLED/72IPD. Sounds like the Pro 2 would be either a side grade or a downgrade for me. Resolution is only half the battle.
when you grabbed the wand controller, you seemed tiny 😁
I am so hyped !
Next VR HMD review : varjo VR 3 🙏🙏
I want to buy , but I am waiting for an affiliate Link 🥺
I got mines today but didn't change my license to perpetual so im sending back
X32i I don't think he's going to review it he said to expensive and not worth it. But he reviewed the xtal so that's confusing and the Varjo Vr-3 is blowing it out the water.
Brutal!
Thanks Thomas! I advertised your review on my channels!
Cool!
Hmmm .... so the image size is small. I decide between PIMAX 8KX and VIVE Pro 2. So should I buy the Pimax instead? The difference in price is not important! The importance is 100% Functionality and compatibility!
Pimax definitely isn't the place to go for reliability and compatability :)
Wait for Index 2
@@huskierss Index 2 was not even reported
@@VU2395 Watch Thrill Seeker's video on it. There's tons of signs that it is going to either be announced or released soon. If money isn't an issue, buy the G2 and get the Index 2 when it comes out.
@@huskierss Thrillseaker totally misinterpreted the information in that video I saw it as well. Its clearly evidence for a portable console, not the index 2. Im not saying the index 2 is out of question but still
Awesome review, well done. Exactly what we wanted to know. do you think the Sweet spot problem is related to using a lower resolution(Performance mode, versus Ultra mode)?
Please, when you used the Performance mode (1224x1224 per eye) and ue 100%SS SteamVR then you had 2692x2692 per eye. Right?
Can you then report what numbers appear in SteamVR when the other modes (High, Ultra, Extreme) are used and mantain the 100%SS in SteamVR?
I won't be buying another headset until they sort this tiny sweet spot issue - it makes such a difference to immersion when you can glance around the whole scene and it's consistently sharp. They simply need to stop using fresnel lenses - gets rid of god rays and this small focus area problem
So I was so sceptical of this review and thought VoodooVE didn't know what he was talking about, but having bought one I agree that the optics of these lenses are terrible. Full of glare and godrays, minimal sweet spot, binocular overlap. All I can say is it's made me love my Quest 2! Sending back, will try a Reverb G2 for Microsoft Flight Simulator.
I'm hyped for when this review goes live, but I have a feeling that they've once again skimped out on putting a good mic onto the headset. Really hoping I'm wrong.
Unsurprising, they completely screwed up on the microphone. :/
@@Tezla_Insanity lol
HTC HQ: "Let's use the same cheap mic we've been using for 5 years already. People don't care about the mic in VR anyway."
That's probably accurate. I never had any complaints about the Vive or Vive Pro mic, and I used them for years.
If the VivePro2 has a better color and black LCD than the Index, it would be worth buying.
I've already ordered so I can't cancel it any longer 😢
why not?
I love how thorough this review is. Good job, thanks!
lucky us htc did not get even MORE confused with degrees and using farenheit degree with their calculation ! it would have been more or less 49 °fov if converted in celcius degree !
WTH? Didn't HTC say IPD is 57-72, not 70.5?
No idea, but that are the values that I could read inside the headset for min and max.
How on earth do you get just 78 degrees HFOV with the G2? I tested mine and got more than 90, so weird! Are you not strapping it on enough? It should be similar in vertical and horizontal fov. Apart from that, good review, but please START with display and visuals, not everything else!!
I can't change the shape of my head, sorry 🤣
It's definitely 78 Hfov with the G2!
@@voodoodevr-en Interesting! Have you tried the frankenfov mod? For me the G2 is like 95 degrees hfov
Hi! what GPU?
RTX 3090
30:10 I guess the term your looking for is Fisheye Effect?
I feel this way about HP reverb G2. nice displays, horrible optics. I think optics need to be improved on ALL VR headsets. it's a major weak spot to me.
did you try other HMDs? On Quest 2, Valve Index its OK, but on Vives it always was not as good as on other devices. Also Pimaxes have a good sweet spots & it works very well for some % of ppl, but others have significats issues with it, so there are still options though. But I dissapointed as well I like my Vive Pro, after going with thin VRCover mod sweetspot got much better & it's not a big complain now, but comfort degradated as thin cover doesn't help with plastic sharp edges on the HMD. Hope with the same mod Vive Pro 2 will be usable, as I can't use G2 for me it's totally unsable piece of crap & I still use Index instead + Quest 2
Its not good for your eyes to VR with a Poor Sweet Spot
Does it support 2 3090 gpus nvlinked ? Do you think it's possible to get 120 fps with 2 gpus nvlinked in project cars ? Also do you think that amd 3990x is better than intel 11900k for vive pro 2 ? Thanks
I do not think any VR game supports nvlink, less than a handful of flatscreen games bother with that anymore. Linus actually tried 2x 3090rtx in nvlink, there was like one game that shown proportional results. The issue is that with GPUs, anything outside the chips introduces big latency and GPUs are sensitive to latency. To run project cars at 120hz, I don't think any currently released GPU can do that at Pro2 resolution, maybe the cards next year.
As for a choice between a 3990x VS 11900k, I don't see much a point. I'd pick the 3900x just because you can upgrade to Ryzen3 in the future, although a 5800x or 5900x or even a 5600x would be fine for VR (I do not think VR games are terribly multicore sensitive).
Intel are better for VR and no there is not a game in VR that supports Dual gpus
I feel like the pimax is a better deal. but I'd just wait for decagear. half the price and 99% as good. but then again it's all theory. who knows if it'll even get out. maybe valve will have a nice headset
Why does HTC not get people like you involved in the development of these headsets, makes you wonder who tests the prototypes out?
Yes like Pimax did, was mich better then.
Waterbubble feel is probably distortion at the edge of your view
I welcome this swimming feeling
Why you did test in old vesion of SteamVR? I think it is better use beta vesrion
bah, the let down with the vive pro and cosmos elite was the lenses. I was really hopeful that the had done better this time around. that small sweet spot makes this headset a HARD PASS
Whew, glad I somehow predicted this and cancelled my pre-order two days ago. Won't have to go through the hassle of returning the bastard... I'll just stick with my Index & VivePro with gearVR mod (for dark games)
What is GearVR mod?

Having owned all the major consumer headsets I seriously doubt the FOV and sweet spot is going to be as bad as he says for most people. I’ve seen reviews of how bad even the G2 sweet spot is and after extensive use it’s works great in my opinion. Loved the 8KX but that thing made me feel cross eyed half the time and it’s so uncomfortable to wear! Giving the Vive Pro 2 a fair shake, it’s being delivered June 5th and I bet it replaces my G2….albeit this is only going to be used for sim racing and flight sims. Quest 2 with airlink/virtual desktop is still king for everything else.
I know what you mean and I know that I have a head form that not many people have, but I can only show my own values... I can't change my head ;)
@@voodoodevr-en just hoping it works better than the G2 for that money! We need an amazing Index 2!!!
@@voodoodevr-en your head looks fairly normal but it's strange proportions have been a highly debated topic the past few days.
The lenses are really terrible. Returning my pro 2 due to this... :(
Everytime a new headset comes out I think this will be the one to succeed my oculus rift, and everytime I get disappointed.
Fantastic review, very informing. Keep it up!
