Steve of RG really helped a lot of people.
My husband and I went to Hawaii for our 26th wedding anniversary. We were in Honolulu having dinner - the staff brought out a dessert with sparkly candles and sang to us. The woman in the table next to us asked us where we were from. We told her we lived in Napa Valley, and expected her to say something about wine. To our surprise she said that we we’re probably gonna think she was crazy but when someone mentions Napa Valley, she thinks of Rancho Gordo Beans! She offered that she’s a member of a special club and is thrilled. We looked at each other and started laughing, which puzzled her at first… But we went on to explain that Julia Newberry is our daughter-in-law, and we knew all about Rancho Gordo! So, when they talk about cult, following… It is so true!

I love Rancho Gordo beans! I grew up eating beans and, when I became vegetarian over 40 years ago, beans became a beloved staple in my diet. Recently a reader comment in the New York Times Cooking recommended Rancho Gordo beans. I was skeptical - beans are beans, right? - but decided to try some anyway. Wow! Yes, Rancho Gordo beans definitely *are* much better than regular grocery-store dry beans, in flavor and in texture. More expensive, too, and since I eat beans daily and need to stay within my limited budget, I try to balance my intake of Rancho Gordo beans with less expensive beans. Rancho Gordo's Buckeye beans are my favorite, but they are all wonderful.
America's Test Kitchen is a BIG fan of Rancho Gordo beans! Their Cook's Illustrated magazine is where I first heard of them.
Down here in Brazil, beans are also part of our standard everyday meal... but it goes with rice.
It's mostly only two varieties of beans, in regular grocery stores I mean, plus around half a dozen variations depending on what region you live, and what you use beans for. Pinto beans and black beans are the most common for everyday meals, white beans also used in salads, and then you have a bunch of different beans that are used in different parts of the country.
Oh, but in street markets and stores that sell grains in bulk you can find a whole ton more varieties.
Never tried many different varieties, this piece makes me wanna try! xD

Yep, I bought Rancho Gordos looking for pandemic cooking excitement, but I stayed for the bean flavor. There is a big difference between Rancho Gordos and beans that have been sitting in a warehouse a couple of years. I have an unsophisticated palette, and even I can tell the bean difference. Ayocote negros rock!
Beans are definitely pretty important here in New Mexico too. With corn and squash you have the “3 sisters”, and let’s not forget chile 🌶️ which is put in almost everything here. I still have yet to get a micaceous bean pot which is suppose to the best way to cook beans. They are supposed to be best at bringing out the natural sweetness of beans, plus they’re beautiful to look at.
We love Steve and the fact he introduced us to such amazing beans. But the magic is in the beans as much as I would like to gift Steve with the magic. Every different bean brings surprise and delight. To think I used to hate dried beans.
RG Beans are so easy to cook too! No overnight soaking and they are so fresh they don't even need any sort of presoaking - I just boil them and they are always ready in a couple of hours. On the days I work remote at home, I can get them cooking in the afternoon and have a great dinner that night.

Because of a local grower, I've been introduced to 'better than store bought' beans so ordering from RG was a no brainer. I would like to see the beans lined up next to each other for size comparison.

I love beans especially baked in the oven for a long time, but the recipes are so limited. Everyone has super sweet baked beans. There are so many other possibilities.

Yes, definitely. Just look up whether it’s a pole or bush plant before. Now is a great time to plant.
