  • Left hand Spey Casting tips. The best way to learn to cast with your week hand is to just start doing it. It is especially helpful if you have shoulder issues and cack handed casting puts too much strain on your shoulders. The good news about casting with your weak hand up is that it still allows your dominant hand to be involved in the important role of pushing during the sweep, stirring the pot, and pulling during the forward stroke. Give it a try!

A repeat of an appeal to the Jedi's many fans...
Just a heads up...I am trying to solicit funds for the Jedi to purchase a remote microphone to aid in his video lessons that we all benefit from. I am going to seed it with $50 and would welcome any and all to step up and help in this matter, be it financial or advisory. I have found Tim's lessons to be top-notch and always delivered in a warm, friendly tone that encourages even the most inept casters, like myself. Let's help him, help us, with a remote microphone setup so we can hear his lessons, and his lighthearted candid self abasements, when the wind blows or he turns his back to the camera. The quality lessons and friendship he freely gives is surely worthy of our coin.
I plan on asking Tim to pin this one on top. If you find it crass or otherwise objectionable, blame me.

I have to say I find casting left handed very easy. It could be due to the fact I'm left-handed! I'll flip all your advice for my right hand! Great video mate as usual!

Have you tried to do exactly the same with your good hand on top?
If so, do you get the same loops? @@LineSpeedJediTimRawlins

Thanks alot Tim! Now when I'm out there flogging the water I can't get that little Steelhead Valentine ditty out of my head. Lol.
So great to see you practicing your left hand casting for us, warts and all. God knows I've got more warts than most. You've inspired me to get out there and embarrass myself in front of others, but it has to be done.

You're an inspiration Tim. Like everyone, I struggle off my non dominant side. Part of my problem is that I don't want to entrench bad habits. I'm competent off my dominant side, but not confident enough that I'm doing everything right. Still practicing.

Hey Tim, thanks for another good video. I practice cast every night as well and I’m super hard on myself and a bit selfish with my time time spent doing what I love to do so I can identify with you my friend. Although you suck at singing I still like you man.

I, too, was reduced to tears. I never thought it possible for a human voice to sound so much like a lonely harp seal in estrus. You are a fine caster and even better teacher, but as a singer...loose aluminum roofing in a wind storm carries a better tune. Ha!

I have what I think is an excellent practise drill for training the bottom hand which includes training "the other side" as well. Its on my UA-cam channel.

No, your singing fine, I like listening to music via ear plugs, gives me that extra push to fish harder, especially on still water rainbows, fellow anglers not to keen on my dancing, however it puts a smile on my face.

@@LineSpeedJediTimRawlins Oh yes, we are just starting our spring, the dawn chorus certainly gets my back side out of bed. we have a glorious morning now, no wind and hazy sunshine perfect for angling but our rivers are currently in raging flood, good for still water. I see your fishing a crystal clear river, what fish are in it, ours the Atlantic salmon and migratory brown trout (sea trout),

You are the best Tim !!
    Love this one!!
I notes from about 8:30 few sexy loops with the lefty on top, those sexy ones are also different in shape than when you use the right on top in your other videos, did you notes that?...same is happening to me , either way I over head cast or roll cast. I couldn’t shoot any running line at first, just playing with the SH out rod tip, but I was impressed how quick I build the memory muscles when casting lefty on top. Your elbow tip really helps. Bottom hand also is key for me on the control. I would say that It’s the one still naturally more “brain linked” to the exercise. The hardest part for me to develop the skills was the over head cast on the 180 as well for the roll cast/spey with the anchor placement and keeping the rod tip on the forward cast inside the rail tracks.
You really are doing good things out there brother, keep em coming please. Really good raw one lol!!👌👌

Thank you very much for the good casting videos, you have posted to a youtube during the years.
May i ask what rod and skagit ( model, lenght and class/weight of the rod and line ) you are using on a video?
    Best regards!

great video, is that a 7wt or 8wt rod ?
I have an 11ft 7wt deer creek switch rod and it doesn’t cast T-14 at all. I’m using T-8, 10 footer with a 350gr OPST commando head. I wish I bought the 8wt version . A friend recommended 325gr commando head but I couldn’t buy it locally. I’m a new spey caster and really appreciate your lessons, it helps me on the river, can’t wait to hook a fish.

Well, practice makes perfect, most of the waters I fish are right hand bank so making me cast with my left hand uppermost with the single spey . I'd say my left hand casting is about 90% of my right hand casting and at times more graceful in not going for gold all the time, yes its awkward at first but persevere for more enjoyment with your fishing and more fish catches

@@LineSpeedJediTimRawlins , It took a good few years to get it right, more or less self taught, viewed old video's with double tapered lines casting , had i had hands on coaching from day one, reasonable proficiency would have come sooner. I can cast but cant catch fish or sing :) :) :)

Just being a little critical, I notice that when you raise your rod your right hand is close to your body, then on the backward swing it comes out ? .I start off with the rod horizontal with bottom hand away from my body, i then raise both arms but do not hinge I try to achieve low angle (say 45 degrees) that i can i successfully pull the weighted line out of the water, then swing at the same angle ,then raise it slightly in the furthest back position, on the forward cast this angle is maintained at roughly at 45 degrees to the horizontal in the same plane as the back swing. this creates a tighter loop and goes out like a bullet. Try this with all angles, especially when fishing under trees and tight to the bank, have fun

OK Timmy, currently preparing for a fishing trip so it will be in a couple of weeks time. I'm into video as a very keen amateur so will film my efforts primarily as a single spey cast, I do other casts but don't practice them much.
