Just like lots of others, this was the first double spey cast video where I truly understood the entire process, exactly why it sometimes goes wrong, etc. The whole square/box concept was extremely helpful.
Another FABU video. I've watched these all before but find myself coming back and taking notes to improve the little things that make the difference between success and a limp cast that doesn't fly well. Thank you again, Simon and well done !
Most of becoming good at all expressions of Spey is KNOWING HOW YOU LEARN. When I was learning, I tried to learn from UA-cam. Was a hot mess for 2 years. Sooooo frustrated. Finally hired a guide. The hands on instruction with him standing right beside me helped but only somewhat. Then asked him to please fish below me so I could see and then mimic what I saw. The immediate demonstration made it all come together in a heartbeat and all the casts suddenly made perfect sense. If you’re on here frustrated, don’t give up, try finding a proficient caster and invite him/her to fish below you. Now sharing Spey with others.
Watched way too many “Spey how-to videos” but this one is best! Shows the perfect cast, the most important tips for success, and the most common mistakes, from various angles! Simon is one of the best, and funny too! Now if only the rivers weren’t nearly frozen to go and give them a go!
An avid fan of yours Mr Gawesworth I have your casting book as well but don't have it with me at the moment..A few questions please if I may , its the leader that stays in the box correct ? even though the shooting head Skagit or Skandi plus leader maybe partly out along with running line and when the cast is complete whether single or double and you have completed swinging the soft hackle wets or lures you have to retrieve the line and my question is how much do you retrieve before you start the spey cast whether doubt or single
Hey Stuart, we asked Simon your questions. He said 1) "yes, well sort of the leader. The junction of the leader and line tip should be in the very center of the box, so if you have a very long leader, some of it will be outside the box". 2) "The most balanced set up when casting any shooting head is when there is about a 1 foot overhang of shooting line outside the rod. So it depends how far you cast as to how much you retrieve. When possible, strip all the shooting line in except that last one foot."
loving how you show us what the line is doing by showing different points of views! Learnt a lot from your video. Many thanks for your time and efforts!
Is like having Michelangelo doing a video. “How to The Sistine Chapel ceiling, painted by Michelangelo FOR FREE 🙂and kids we now can be watching the best how to double Spey is done. Thank you so much RIO and SG for the time and work in all the different camera points view and the “box”👌👌👌
I had just viewed the Rio single spey video and in it is describes a 45degree angle "dip" on the back swing, rising up finishing high to develope a D loop. This may be confusing to beginners when in a double spey or in finishing a Snap T, you do not want that "dip". Am I seeing this correctly?
Hi Joe, we asked Simon what to explain. He said that the Single Spey is the only one of the five main Spey casts that has any kind of dip during the D-loop stroke. All the others should have a slightly, continuously rising rod tip path during the D-loop stroke. Hopefully that makes some kind of sense?
this game sucks, is there a dlc update that helps me remove all the excess garbage sea weed and algae in my trash rivers? i cant even get a single roll cast without snagging and its gonna hurt the fish population

Awesome! Glad we could help!
Quality of the instruction is beyond the word "great" can describe. This is just crazy good for someone who has been struggling with the cast.....
You know there are people who can 'teach' you fly casting and then there is this dude. Very well explained and informational.
Thanks a lot for your comment. We're delighted that you enjoyed this video.

Appreciate the kind response!
I keep coming back to this video, I'm going to get it right consistently one of these days.

By far the best content for learning the fundamentals of all Spey casting 👍 with buying Rio just to keep Simon busy
Thanks a lot for your comment. We're delighted that you enjoyed this video, and love your support.
Thanks
No problem Mathew.
Thank you Sir for all your great instruction, you really help me learn to fly fish without having a mentor.
Thank you! We'll let Simon know!

Would love to learn more about overhang.
We'll put that to the film team and see if they can make a video on that - great idea!

P.s. I learned the single spey first and on the first day I caught 1 fish and it was a 36 inch steelhead with a 22 inch girth!
That's an amazing start!
Muchas gracias Simon
Tremendo vídeo👏👏👏👏👏👏
Glad you liked it, thanks
Son Geniales Las Explicaciones Simon!!! Excelentes Gracias Gracias Gracias
He's the best instructor, bet his voice alone can catch fish
He could talk them right into the net for sure.
Brilliant tuition, I'm starting to feel my age though as I remember Simon first becoming a Shakespeare consultant
Glad you enjoyed the video, Marc - thanks for your comment. We'll pass it on to Simon
Is this cast appropriate for Stillwater casting?
Great casting Simon sent it my brother in Quebec I believe you know him Neil Houlding’s the name 👍
Nice
Figured this out naturally. There is only so many ways its possible to cast a flyrod
I bought a Orvis clearwater #5 travel rod, with your rio gold wf5, it feels like the line is not loading the rod proparly what am I doing wrong?
What ever mistakes you'll make with a rod you'll make with a club racquet bat or stick.
Totally!
all this explanation is great. I'd love to start the video with 3-5 cast with out your explaining it. to just see wtf your even talking about first.
"Its as easy as that" .....not so easy
Release the hounds huh?🤔😒 ignorance
