      Great review. I have to have at least one of these very cool devices. But in my living room I just made it a condition for automatically turning the light off that the tv is also off. This works great.
      What is the power consumption? Compared to leaving the lights on for 20 minutes after an ordinary motion sensor stops detecting motion.

      It looks like it is just what the doctor ordered! It's a pity about not being a router, and I would rather have a USB-C connector and no cable at all so one can choose any cable that is already lying around. Still, it is a great device and I would buy at least one to try out. We do have a lot of rooms where this solution is needed so to get the whole house fixed would need 5 of them. If the true range is less than 4m we would need two in some rooms to get 100% coverage.

      I love that sensor... I love it that much that I made my own ESP version about 2 years ago, paired with a PIR sensor it is the perfect occupency sensor as you mentioned. I went ahead and added a DHT and a Lux sensor (based on the bruh multisensor). Total cost about 12 euro if orded cheap at aliexpress or double if orderd on amazon or so. All 11 spaces in my house have one of these multisensors.
      The price you mentioned is compared to my ESP version is not excusable IMNSHO even if you take zigbee vs wifi in consideration.

      That sounds great. For turning on the lights you could use a normal motion detector. That also opens up new options, what isn't easy to do with motion detectors. With a light sensor, you can switch on the lights if someone is in the room and it gets too dark.
      The Espresence solution I don't get to work. With my Xiaomi Watch it isn't possible and I can't find a suitable beacon to use additionally.
      So the FP1 would be a super solution.

    Most useful sensor for smart homes! Hoping to see this available in the international market ASAP.
    Also - as mentioned, if there was a future “FP2” device release, the little niggles / ideas (such as the potential to combine a conventional motion sensor below within the same enclosure, have it support ZigBee routing as a permanently powered device, and perhaps changing to having a USB-C socket on the unit so that people can BYO different cable lengths for power than the one supplied in the box if needed [and hence not hard wired].
    Even with the current little niggles, this is an exciting innovation from Aqara that hasn’t been adequately solved by their competitors - PLEASE Aqara, get this product released to the global market ASAP!

    I guess the real reason Aqara is not launching this anywhere else is that it uses a mini radar tech which operates in a pre defined frequency band. In many countries, some frequency bands are reserved only for military use. For example, Pixel 4 phone had a Soli radar chip, due to this it was not allowed to launch in India because it used 60GHz band which was regulated by government and thus banned for civilian use.

    Have tried to make my own microwave sensors in the past but had issues where it could not only detect me through walls but could see my neighbours moving around in their lounge too!
    Does this device have any issues where it detects through walls / floors, also does it detect behind the device too (my diy ones didn't have rear shielding)?
    Aqara please create a gen 2 version of this with a Zigbee Router built in - this is a must for all plugged in zigbee devices IMO. Also with mmWave sensors it is possible to count people so please add this feature too.
    It would be great if the software allowed you to add a floorplan of your house and create a map of each of the rooms so you could semi accurately have the sensors say you are in room x / y if there is overlap of sensor coverage (if they can detect through walls etc).

    I think I'd want to measure the power usage, then combine this with a traditional motion sensor and a smart plug. E.g. when motion is detected power this on, and let this monitor room presence. When the room is empty, kill power to this, then wait for motion.

    So interesting to see that it is wired? rather than battery. Your explanation of power requirement makes sense. Hopefully, they will have a battery version and also include a basic motion sensor in a next release of this product. Conceptually it looks very good!! and a very good in depth review. Thank you.
    I have a @Wyze V2 motion sensor (battery) ($9) which is actually very good.
    What I do is have it so that the light drops by 10% brightness if no motion rather than turn off, then after another 10 seconds it turns off. I move my arm, etc. and it goes back up the 10%. However, it seldom kicks in so the sensor seems to work quite well. Some like it, some do not. I do !!

    Have been waiting for those to start selling in US for a while now. I know that there are a bunch of DIY solutions for mmWave sensors, but they cost almost as much as Aqara FP1 does, and software would definitely be significantly worse. I'm still a bit concerned about constant exposure to mmWave though. While it has been in-use for a long time in Airport scanners, those are only used occasionally, and I don't think there has been any studies done on long-term exposure to high frequency waves on a human body.

    • @zigomatic

    • @ilyavolodin7414
      @ilyavolodin7414 2 роки тому +1

      @@zigomatic That's a fair point at least for 5G. 4G uses significantly lower spectrum. But even 5G is lower bands than mmWave. Most of mmWave sensors are either 24Ghz or 60-77Ghz which is significantly higher than 5G's 37-40Ghz range. 77Ghz is a lot of energy being pumped out in an enclosed space. Anyways, I'm not too worried about it, since it's been in use for a while now, but would be nice to see some studies before installing something like that inside my home.

    • @haknys
      @haknys 2 роки тому +3

      @@ilyavolodin7414 77Ghz is just the frequency, not the amount of energy. These devices have such a low output, there is no need to worry. Its not like you are placing a mobile base station in your bed.
      There has not been done allot of studies on how long term exposure of small rain drops affect the body either. And it will never be done. There is an obvious reason for that. :)

    • @ilyavolodin7414
      @ilyavolodin7414 2 роки тому +1

      @@haknys It's been a very long time since my high school physics, but if I'm not mistaken, the higher the frequency the higher the energy of the wave. Again, I'm not all that worried about this, due to the fact that mmWave only penetrate human body by about one millimeter, but they do create pretty high magnetic fields. Just saying that it would be nice to see some research before installing a bunch of new energy emitters through my house. But if Aqara FP1 will soon be available in US, I'll buy them anyways.

    • @heycartys
      @heycartys 2 роки тому +2

      @@ilyavolodin7414 You are not mistaken in that the higher the frequency, the higher the energy of an individual photon. The energy of an individual photon is 5.102×10^-23 joules (thats 0.000 23 zeros 5 Joules) What also matters is how many photons hit you, and at this power there are so few (relatively) photons interacting with a body, that there is no significant effect.

      @@rexodexo56 Of course it would. Movement triggers the radar to start up, radar is used until everyone has left the room, including when there's no movement, then radar switches off again. This really portends well. Back in the late 1990's/early 2000's, I did a lot of presence detection with the Bik proximity detector, which used changes in the capacitance of an electrical field for presence detection. immediate response, didn't care about movement one way or another, supremely reliable. Downside-you had to purchase and solder together a kit, and run two parallel antenna wires across the area room, hall, bed, chair...) you wanted to sense. and, alas, it is no longer available. I've never found anything that could match it.
    but this sensor looks like it's approaching a huge automation holy grail for me... it can sense direction of movement. I am constantly wanting that info - is a vehicle entering or exiting the driveway? Am I walking down the hall towards the bedroom or towards the living room? or, the big one - where am I on an outdoor path?
    we have a 35 acre farm, and I am often working outside during dark hours. I don't want to light up the whole place: I enjoy being able to see the stars and not disrupting livestock or wildlife. In an ideal world, I would have just a pool of light around my feet for safety, and otherwise darkness. Working that way this summer, lining paths near the house with individually addressable led strips, controlled via WLED. It would be trivial to, say, light up a 20 foot section of path, 15 feet in front of and 5 feet behind, each person walking on it - except for figuring out where someone is and where they're going.
    As these are, I definitely want 3-5 for presence detection in the house. Make them waterproof and report the distance (that they're clearly calculating...) of the person, and I'd pay that high price for a couple dozen of them. Because I can't rely on a guest (or an intruder, or my wife) to carry a Bluetooth gizmo for ESPresence. but radar would seem to do the trick. And i prefer not battery operated.

    The last few days I've been looking into a solution and kind of settled on the Bluetooth method using either ESP32's or something else. Not ideal, and still on the fence if I'd really want to go that route.
    But this sounds like the perfect solution. And even at this price point, I know I'd quickly forget what I had spent, while enjoying years of perfect presence detection. I already have 10 Aqara motion sensors and I think I'd only need 3 of these new sensors to make this reliable.

I have sensors on most windows but if my daughters try to escape through the play room window or bedroom window (they have done this before to walk to their grandmother's house 6 miles away). I was going to need 2 sensors per window. If I put these by the window or door which is opposite the window I'm hoping I could setup some automation where leaving the room through the window would be able to trigger. Basically if someone is by the window and then no motion is detected but there was no leaving the room even trigger my red alert automation. The cost for this is about the same as what I would need to pay for 2 of the sensor's I'm currently using at $65 but the added bonus of turning the lights off in my daughter's room makes that a great price. 1 device which is able to take the place of the door sensor, two window sensors and a motion detector is well worth it.

    Great video again. I thought as I watched about the entry delay "shame they didn't put a PIR in it too". I thought I'd buy a few until I heard the price. But I'd still definitely buy 2 or 3, as it looks like it works really well.

    Would love one of these. I am working on setting up Room Assistant to accomplish this in four rooms, which has given me lots of difficulties, & a sensor like this would be a much simpler method. If they make these sensors available, I would quickly get some to accompany or even replace my bluetooth sensors

    Definitely interested in buying one. I have one Aqara motion sensor and two Aqara G2H cameras that have built in motion sensors. Those 3 sensors don’t work reliably enough to do what I’d like to do.

    Definitely a market! I’ve waited all my life for true precense detection without having to carry additional devices on my person. The lag on activation is a concern, your recommendation to pair with a PIR motion sensor is a good one, why not combine them into one unit???
    Great video. Really excited about removing all my light switches! And also have home assistant recognise when I pause Netflix to check time of day and if I’m in the room to bring on a nice amber glow from my down lighters.
    Or sitting in the office monitoring whether and time of day or a lux sensor to see if an occupied room needs electric lighting to maintain light levels!
    I really need this in my life!!!

    found a similar one, but ceiling-mounted. Looks great, however it's not being handled by zha - no entities when paired. That said, I would really love a video on implementing of custom device handlers. There seems to be none so far.

    I've had a lot of trouble keeping Aqara devices up in home assistant. For example, the leak sensors. And the last thing you want to have not working is a leak sensor. And that particular device does not have the ability to make a noise if it detects a leak. So they will all be moved to the Aqara Hub. Lesson learned? I will spend a bit more to get something more reliable next time. The motion sensors stay connected, but I don't want to buy a bunch of windows sensors only to find out they don't stay connected.

    I personally see a need for about 5 of these at home, library, office, living room, den, and recording studio. If Aqara doesn't get off the fence on them, I suppose I'll have to order a bunch of RCWL-0516 Doppler Radar motion Sensors, and tie them into ESPHome, or see if the folk working ESPresence would consider it as a feature add. Honestly would much prefer the Aqara device if available.

    Seems great and I would buy some in the UK - but shame they didn't build a motion sensor in too - and why the wire sticking out of the front - could you not have put that in the back? So for me, I may wait till v2! Still useful to turn the TV off when the lounge is empty tho so will probably get one anyway :)
