Isn't she just rebranding her musical genre more appropriately in line with her audience? Was she ever a country music singer except by self identifying as one?
I don't know her or her music well, but I do sympathize with some of what she said in the LA Times interview. What is YOUR definition of country music? How broad or limiting or subjective is it? Merle Haggard is, in my view, the best male country artist of all time. But so many others not identified with country music have done country music that's better than what commercial crap dominates that genre these days. That includes The Byrds, The Cowboy Junkies, Chris Isaak and so many others.

Maren, you don't get it and have just exposed your ignorance & intolerance. Music does not belong to any one group of people or a singular view. Music is the expression of ALL views and emotions as the creators see and feel it. By judging everyone else that does not conform to your views as bigoted and racist you have claimed ownership of what does not belong to you. Music is universal and belongs to the world. Next time you feel like condemning an entire genre of music and the people who enjoy it, you might want to start with the violence plagued and misogynistic lyrics of rap music and the people who glorify it.

Not sure why this is even new worthy. There are artists categorized by one genre but sometimes they perform a song that fits in another. Doesn't matter where she releases her songs, pop, country, R&B.... if the country charts like it they will adapt it. Now though since she feels the need to give her reasons why she made the move, going beyond just, country doesn't align with her values anymore and calling the industry and people derogatory names, I doubt now country fans will accept her music so best for her to find another customer base.

True. I will always defend her vocals and song writing, but it’s very upsetting to see the comments she makes about people she disagrees with.
Why? 😂 literally just having an honest reaction to being disillusioned from Nashville and feeling negatively about them. Song writers often pull from experience when they aren't trying to just play totally off political ties to save their careers.
It sounds like she is not a good fit for any genre of music. One does not grow in popularity by burning bridges and alienating a large group of people. I've never heard of her. People don't listen to music out of spite, they listen for the joy of music. I enjoy music from all genres.

Good…maybe now country music will get more country !!! It’s been a trend the last decade or so. All these pop singers that probably can’t make it in the pop sphere for whatever reason become country singers because they’re from the south and think the path would be easier. Then…they get some traction and start bashing the fans because they don’t agree with them politically. I think she’s a great singer…but I also think she’s a toxic person. If her leaving makes the scene a little more Luke Combs and less FGL…country music will be better off for it.
This where one Taylor Alison Swift still is not at odds with the Country music scene. After all, Swift has completed the _Taylor's Version_ of almost all her early albums with its mostly Country sound, and even allowed the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, TN do a exhibition of Swift's years as a Country singer. Swift still has enough friends in Nashville that if she decides to do a Country album again, she will be welcomed back with open arms.

I'm not familiar with Ms. Morris's music, but I've been noticing some of the news articles and how she got into country music thinking she was going to burn it down. Maybe that was her first mistake, why do people feel they have to change the world to suit them. Since the beginning of mankind, there has been love and hate, everyone feels love for something but everyone doesn't necessarily love the same thing, same with hate. The trick is to respect another person's right to feel how they want enough to tolerate them and act civil towards one another, unfortunately, there's too many people these days that don't respect others and they try to force their beliefs on others. I wish Ms. Morris the best of luck with her future endeavors and hope she finds her niche in life, and hopefully works more on that tolerance thing and less on changing the world.

Considering the whitewashing I mean yes many artists are more politically conservative but I don’t think that’s going to draw anyone from making country music when it’s what they love. But to me Taylor Swift sings only one sing over and over again with slight variations, as if produced by AI. I can name several Dixie Chicks songs and even hum a few bars. But I can't even NAME a Swift song, let along hum or whistle one. Swift songs leave no trace, no memory, behind them.

I use to absolutely LOVE country music. Some of the world's greatest songwriters and musicians are in the genre. However; I did not realise how racist and hateful country music fans were until Trump came to power in 2016. I have never listened to another country song again since.
