  • 3 night / 4 day backpacking / photography trip from Tuolumne Meadows south through the Lyell Canyon and over Donohue Pass into the Ansel Adams Wilderness where I visited Marie Lakes, Davis Lakes, Island Pass, and Thousand Island Lake. Exited the trek via the Rush Creek trail down to Silver Lake in the June Lake Loop. For photos from the trip please visit.

Awesome video! Back in June I hiked about 15 miles from Tuolumne Meadows to Sunrise Lakes and then back out near Tenaya Lake. It was honestly one of the coolest things I've ever done and this video makes me want to go back! I feel your pain with the mosquitos as i went through the same thing on my trip. Thanks for the great footage!

nice video man, I did the 10% of what you did here and I understand that feeling of being there. I used to work on TM Grill and was the best job ever.

This was informative and fun to watch. You remind me a bit of Greg Aiello (host of "Motion" television series and SYMG guide for a time).

Another stellar hiking vid, dude! Enjoyed seeing you absolutely destroy your new living room. Might have to fly out there next summer to get some Sierra miles on my "odometer".

I'll be using my GoPro Hero 3 Black for all of my filming. I like it because its small and lightweight

Thanks! I shoot with a Nikon D7000, and for this trip I brought along two fully charged batteries, which JUST got me through the four days. Cheers.

Hey Ryan, not too much. I bring a lightweight kit consisting of a Nikon D7000, a Tokina 12-24mm UWA lens, some filters, a 50mm f/1.8, and a carbon fiber tripod. It all adds about 7-8 pounds to my load.

Really inspired! I'm an amateur photographer and now I can't wait to get out and hit some bigger, tougher trails for the experience! Thanks!!!

Awesome! Nice camera and great shots. Love all of the sunsets. I'll be guiding a group of 3 through Happy Isle and out to Tuolumne Meadows in mid August.

Hey, there, great video! I just stumbled across it, and I like your down to earth style, and especially, no dumb music! Hope you are still out there, making great videos.

Incredibly jealous/ inspired by your video. I cannot wait to give backpacking a try now! Quick question: about how much photo gear do you lug around with you on these hikes?

Really enjoyed this video, such beautiful country! When it comes to carrying a tripod, have you found a carbon fiber one small enough (and sturdy enough) to fit in your pack or do you strap it to the outside? I have a Manfrotto which is nice and light, but it's a bit tall to carry around, especially with the ballhead attached. Thanks!

Hey Josh! Great video! I'll be doing a similar route this summer with a few more days squeezed in. I was wondering where you camped the first night? Thanks!

+Greg Redling Hey Greg, the first night I camped about 8 miles south of Tuolumne Meadows. The trail is almost completely flat for those 8 miles, then starts climbing up through the forest just after you see Kuna Creek cascading down from the east. But if you go maybe another 3 miles from that spot there is gorgeous camping in a small cirque below Mt Lyell just before the trail starts the big climb up over Donohue Pass. Have fun!!

It is a lot easier to get Giardia than people realize. I worked in the Mammoth Ranger District of the Inyo National Forest for ten years and know of some very remote springs where some of our wilderness rangers picked it up. It has been found in springs on the side of the Grand Tetons that require long, technical climbs to reach. It isn't easy to get rid of either and people suffer for awhile. The ultra light hiking trend I see has some real negatives. If you use a filter that needs a battery then you should be carrying enough spare batteries to replace every battery in every device you are carrying in your pack. This includes flashlights, headlamps and filters. I also carry spare bulbs for all my lights. You should also have an alternative means of water purification in your pack as well. I carry the small tablets, one for purification and one to take the bad taste out of the water. I've had to assist unprepared people both on and off the job for decades so I've seen the importance of carrying enough gear for contingencies. We've had several search and rescues of late in the Mammoth area involving people who weren't carrying enough gear for the circumstances. To me it's a wonder more people don't die.

Hey Scott, I have an Induro CT113 with an Acratech ballhead; the combo is about 26.5" when folded up. I strap it horizontally to the back of my pack. Works great for me, you just gotta be careful in tight spots.
