"I was picturing a beautiful, blue, crystal...just like...glassy, abyss of beauty. And instead, it's just an abyss..." lol "I'm sure it's a beautiful lake at some time of year. But we're here now." For me, laughing about disappointment or suffering makes it almost fixed.

Such beautiful places you get to explore!! I'm just amazed. One question though, since I'm quite new to hiking, what device or app (or whatever) do you use to find your way when you`re off he trail?

Hi, Su! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video! And yeah, the Sierra is so beautiful! Lately, I've been using the Gaia GPS app on the iPhone XS, and I'm very happy with it. You can download topo maps for use offline and search for hikes directly from within the app -- and the iPhone XS is waterproof and has Face ID to avoid unlocking problems with the old fingerprint reader (which never worked with sweaty or wet hands). I've also used the Garmin Oregon extensively in the past because it's nearly indestructible and can be submerged in water and has long battery life with lithium AAs, but smartphones are slowly starting to beat it, especially because topo maps for the Garmin devices are ridiculously expensive.

@@HankLeukart Thanks so much for your answer!! The thing is, I'm just a language teacher from Uruguay, working and living in Uruguay, and I've just checked the cost of an Iphone and it's 2000 dollars!! That's almost what I earn in a whole year of work :-( so it's deffinitely unaffordable for me. Is there any app which would work in a regular smartphone? Or any other alternative? Of course here in Uruguay it's impossible to buy anything technology related since everything costs 5 times more than in any nearby country, so I might take the oportunity to travel a bit and also buy maybe another phone which would allow me to use some GPS hiking app, although an iphone XS is unfortunately way out of my budget.

Hi, Su! Aw, sorry, I should have been a bit more clear. You definitely don't need an iPhone X/XS/XR to use Gaia GPS -- I think the phones are too expensive, but I do think the combination of them being waterproof, having Face ID, and better battery life makes for a decent replacement for a dedicated hiking GPS. BUT, the Gaia GPS app is available for most iPhones and Android phones, and it works on any Android phone with Android 4.1+ or iPhone with iOS 10+ (iPhones 5+). So, for example, you could pick up a used iPhone 6s for ~$150 and then buy the Gaia GPS app on it ($20). That's still pricey, but it costs much less than an Garmin Oregon ($350) and the topo maps with Gaia come free. Phone battery life can be an issue for hikes longer than a day hike, but you can always carry an extra battery pack. Of course, the least expensive thing to do is get a paper topographical map of the area you want to hike in and bring a mirror with a compass. That does require learning how they work and how to navigate without a GPS, but it costs very little and doesn't require any batteries at all! :)

@@HankLeukart Oh That's much better. I think I'd be able to spend around $200. That is within my price range :-)
Buying second hand a very good idea!
      Thanks a lot !!

The material looks so thin that you could easily poke a hole in an submerged tree stump or sharp objects.
