I bought my first MTB based on one of your reviews. It was the 2019 Giant Trance 2. In January I upgraded to a ‘22 Stumpjumper Evo Expert. I love the bike. However, I do have two items for a bike at a $6,300 price point that bug me. First the 18T ratchet in the cassette is horrific. Second, the brake levers should be the RSC levers instead of the RS. Other than those two items… it’s a great bike. I had the 54T ratchet in the hub before it left the shop on purchase day. For my riding the Evo is perfect. The geo adjustability is amazing.
Clint, a few years ago your video reviews lead my wife and I to purchase Giant bikes. I got an anthem, and she got a trance, we still have the bikes and love them. Thanks for your hard work!
Very concise. Love it, you can tell you really know your stuff. Been enjoying the knowledgeable and to the point videos. Glad to hear your back at what you like to do.
I built one of these last year starting with an S-Works frame. I speced it with Shimano XT, Fox 34 and some We Are One Faction wheels with DT350’s. It’s been a great bike and it’s pretty light at about 27.7 lbs. I run my bike in high position with 170 cranks. I like to pedal as much as I can so I really wanted the pedal clearance. It’s definitely not the stiffest chassis but it’s not a noodle. Has a nice whippy feel to it. It climbs very well. I’m sure there’s some more efficient bikes out there but the rear suspension is responsive and supportive. My rear shock stays in the middle position. Geo is great no complaints. I’m 5’10” riding an S4. The value now isn’t great unfortunately. My build barely cracked $7k with carbon wheels and bars. I did have a Fox transfer I used for the build with a shim but since added a Bike Yoke.
I have the Sworks version and I absolutely love it. For my local trails I went with a more XC tire setup. Ground control in the front and fasttrack in the rear. The stock tires just seem to really slow down the efficiency of the bike. Although the Butcher T9 is my all time favorite tire on my Enduro bike.
Good coverage of the specs, thanks! One note, Specialized doesn't spec their in-house/own brand dropper any more because they don't make one anymore (probably a good thing considering how violent they were when raising up) From what I've seen, the lower models with dropper seat posts are being spec'd with TranzX or X-Fusion posts--my 2022 SJ Evo Comp has the X-Fusion and it's much better than any of Specialized Command Posts I used (three).
Totally agree with glossy paint on carbon bikes. My gravel bike has matte paint and it makes Me think the whole bike is much more fragile than it is. Mind games
Love your vids! Some of the most informative and helpful vids I've ever seen! In case you don't know a couple of things you did not mention are that the rear triangle is for the first time not a Horst-Link Four Bar system and has been replaced with single piece CARBON triangle with flex built into the carbon stays. I will be very interested to hear what you think about this. Also they changed to locations for the cable routing. Anyhoo, I will be sitting on the edge of my seat waiting for these vids to come out. I am a Specialized Pro and still can't afford a NEW Specialized and ride two pre-owned older Specialized. I have to admit I was really hoping you had a Specialized Epic EVO in the box, but the Stumpjumper Expert is my #2 dream bike, so I am still very excited to hear your reviews! God Bless!
I have one of these! Although I’m jealous of the white color and with I had gotten that one instead. You said that your stem is 35mm long, which reminded me that I ended up getting a shorter stem after my S4 came with a 55mm.🙄 I’m willing to bet that 35mm is actually the bore for the bar and it’s a 50mm, but getting one that’s shorter (preferably less than the 44mm offset of the fork like a 40mm) will actually make a big difference and I’d recommend it. I actually got a fork with longer offset to make a 50mm stem feel more natural. Hope you love it!
Awesome build Clint. Doing a similar build with my shop here in ATL, but going to have it be a multi purpose bike. Rocking the 34/DPS for longer pedaly days and some of the more tame Southeast stuff, then having a 36/FloatX overforked to 150mm for park days. Specialized has really built an impressive machine that is so multi purpose.
Glad to see you back at it! Of course you do this after I made my decision on a bike. I was between this and the Evo. I ended up with the Evo for the balance of one bike that can do everything fairly well. I keep it in the steepest hta for pedaling and I can drop the bb etc for park or down hill. Interested to see what you have to say about this one. What I will say is both the regular and Evo pedal so much better than the 19. I sold mine and went to the epic Evo and now I’m back to a stumpy lol.
This 34 with Grip 2 is my all-time favorite fork. I have a 130mm from a YT Izzo and just ordered a 140mm air spring. Hopefully my comment still stays the same ;-)
I advise you to close the gap between the chainstay and bottom bracket. if a stone gets there, then when the suspension is triggered, it will break through the carbon.
Nice review, and nice bike! I have the 2021 Stumpjumper Carbon Expert, which I believe is pretty much the same as the 2022 model, aside from the price. I managed to find mine in January of 2021 when bikes were scarce and the price was $4,600. I absolutely love the bike! Specialized did a good job with the build. They were smart to spec the bike with 130 rear/140 front. The previous iteration of the Stumpjumper was a 140/150 bike, and with the 34 fork it was a bit too flexy. The new Carbon Expert is, in my opinion, just right for trail riding. It's lightweight and lively - perfect for the technical/rooty trails I ride as well as more relaxed multi-use trails. I don't think you mentioned in your review the flex stay design for the rear triangle, which Specialized engineered for weight reduction, I think. I look forward to your impression of the rear suspension as well as other aspects of the bike.
I have a 21 levo which has very similar to this bike and those tires are super nice I'm coming from Maxis on my other bike. They are made in the old panaracer factory with specialized bought.
Got mine a few months ago, mine is the EVO model. haven't been able to ride it yet due to an injury but hopefully in a few months I get to ride it, however they seem to have improved everything when compared to my 2016.
Perfect timing, trying to decide on a new bike coming from an older XC, looking hard at Stumpy, Stumpy EVO, Pivot trail and switchblade, and even e-bike instead (Levo, Exe). Stumpy at the top of list since I am in FL (Alafia, Santos) and go up to NC quite a bit (Tsali, Fire Mountain, Pisgah). Can't wait more of your reviews on the bike.
If you want 160/150 travel and geo adjustability (3 head tube angles and 2 bb heights), then look at the Evo. I have the 22 Evo Expert and really enjoy it.
Gorgeous bike. My sons 2018 stump jumper has geometry with not much reach, while my newer trance has much more reach. I was wondering if they increased the reach on the stumpy. It’s a great looking bike.
Great review.... Would you recommend the Expert or the Pro model for your everyday train riding? Not looking for speed.... comfort and safety are key for me...
I just recently got a Pivot Switchblade which is slightly downward oriented. I feel very out of place in anything uphill, so I'll try to flip that chip on my bike as well. I also hit my bashguard and pedals too often so I'm interested to see how much of a difference 0.5 degree geometry change will actually do. My bike has 142mm in the back and 160 up front, so I at least hope I can run my bike in the high position most of the time.
Nice looking bike but I kinda miss your Giant reviews which are more affordable bikes , I love specialized bikes , they are always a few years ahead with technology but expensive and very popular

Always love your reviews. I had the exact 2019 Stumpjumper Expert like you had in in your earlier review a few years ago, with the old 4 bar linkage and thought the bike was okay, but too active and mushy out of the saddle. Beautiful build quality though. Sold that for a Tallboy 4 which I love. How does that lack of the rear pivot in the swingarm feel vs. the old 2019 Stumpjumper? How light was this bike? Just curious if you can lockout that Fox 34 fork too. Thanks again for the great bike reviews and glad to see you back running these again!
Good Looking Bike, I wonder about dropper post limitations due to the bent seat tube. Would be interested to hear your take on that. I like a 170 or longer seat dropper so I can pedal tall and decsend deep.
30t front chain ring, if I heard right isn't that a bit small for where you ride and considering your fitness? Also for long term, if you have to swap out the rear shock you are stuck with the specialized version, which may be hard to find, because of the way the shaft attaches to the rear pivot.
Love the look of your new Stumpy, Clint. OneUp dropper spec'd on this is great choice, too. I've been running those droppers on all my bikes and I've been very happy with quality and performance. While bikes have been getting more expensive over the past several years, specking this bike with DPS vs FloatX is typical Specialized...🙄 $6k+ bike should definitely come with carbon bars, solid wheelset and a higher end shock. I have not ridden new Fox 34, but i like 36 for anything 140 and up, so I'm curious to hear what you think of 34 long term.
Curious, how much do you weigh? I have ridden both the 34 and 36 and both feel great, just a different ride quality. But I have buddies that are 200+ lbs and don't feel confident or comfortable on the 34, which is understandable when bombing down mountains. Also, I get your point on the float X vs DPS, but I think specialized was trying to give two distinct options to consumers with the regular vs evo. Not going to stop me from franken biking though. My plan is to have a stumpy with the 34/DPS setup for casual riding, then a 36 and Float X for bike parks and light enduro racing.
Looking forward to your ride feedback. Those 170mm crank arms look like 175mm arms with the hole drilled 5mm closer to the BB to me. So it raises the pedal at the bottom of the stroke, but the arm is still the same length. Can you do a comparison?
Honestly that’s unacceptable that any crank manufacturer does that- use one crank arm length for all their “sizes”. Totally defeats the purpose of going with shorter crank arms!!! Wtf?!!!
One of the heavier trail bikes you've ever had Clint. Even with a 34 fork. No carbon bar or wheels at that build level. Due to the Specialized pricing margins. Hard to beat the Giant Trance X which to me would be a better option. 😉
Why would you spend $6,000 for that setup? In typical Specialized fashion, $6,000 for that build is a complete ripoff! For that kind of money you can get a Spectral 29 CFR: lighter carbon frame, top-of-the-line FOX 36 Factory fork with Kashima coating and Float X Factory EVOL shock, full shimano XTR, DT Swiss XCM 1200 carbon wheels, RaceFace NEXT SL carbon crankset, Canyon carbon handlebars, Ergon SM10 Enduro Comp saddle and Maxxis Minion DHR II tyres. So pretty much an S-Works level build at Expert level price!
Specialized dialed back on ripoff builds for couple of years, was actually very excited about that and even looked at getting one, but they definitely are back to their normal operating procedures 🤣
I have owned a Spectral and I just sold a 2022 Pro stumpy and The refinement of the Stumpjumper cannot be matched by Canyon. Don’t get me wrong I liked my spectral but at the end of the day most of the time you get what you pay for.
@@nicholashines7686 No, that's the whole bloody point: with Specialized you ABSOLUTELY NEVER get what you pay for. I don't know which Spectral build you owned, but CFR goes for Canyon Factory Racing. It's their top-of-the-line build, what their XC, Enduro and DH pro teams use; the equivalent to S-Works in the Specialized brand. And having ridden both I can assure you don't get (almost) double performance/quality in a $11K Stumpjumper S-Works vs. a $6K Spectral CFR. They are almost perfectly similar builds in terms of frame quality and components. And you CERTAINLY get much worse quality in a $6K Stumpy Expert vs a $6K Spectral CFR.
@@The_One-Eyed_Undertaker Where can you get a Canyon Spectral CFR for $6k? Looks like its $7500 and nobody has it. That would be more comparable to a the Stumpy Pro which you can get for $7900, which is lighter and has Specialized dealer network and support, which yes you do pay a premium for. The Canyon is heavier and has a Horst link its more comparable to a Stumpy EVO and more enduro/downhill than a good pedaling platform.

@@ClintGibbs thanks :) you are awesome! I haven’t found it.
Anyone knows if the SWAT box is bigger or smaller than the in frame storage of the Trek models like the Fuel EX?
Thanks!
Get rid of those aluminum wheels! Dead weight!!🤣 Really nice bike. I'm still on my 2019 expert. I personally love it!
How do you like it vs the 2019?
The main difference is shorter fork offset which I really like.
You gonna add your famous chainstay protector?
Not on this one. I’ll rely on the stock one which is really good
6k and it’s not the pro?! We’ve gone to ludicrous speed fellas
And Specialized had another price increase on most bikes last week. I’m only familiar with Evo pricing. Some went up $400
Expert is 6200 now & pro is 8200. They both went up 200 this past Monday lol
@@fatmattsadventures2796 I noticed that the Evo expert stayed at $6300 and the Evo Pro stayed at $8600 while the other SJs and SJ Evos went up.
Prices keep going up and people keep paying the premiums, myself included. When will it stop? For me? The day I can not physically ride anymore.
@@cesarb3 i think we’re being ‘hosed’
Did you weigh the bike with tubes or tubeless?
Tubeless
Is this the "Gloss White Mountain" color?
Yes
One of the heavier trail bikes you've ever had Clint. Even with a 34 fork. No carbon bar or wheels at that build level. Due to the Specialized pricing margins. Hard to beat the Giant Trance X which to me would be a better option. 😉
Ive got a scott genius m im 5ft 9 and it fits me fine i would like to race you but im in england
Sounds like a good opportunity to come ride with us in the states!
5'8" ??? Man I would have NEVER guessed that. Don't know why I thought you were like 6 ft plus.
Sorry, just saw your weigh in at the end of the video.
Marshmellow pink.
No horst link?
No, flex stays. The aluminum models still have the link.
Purgatory has to much drag. Eliminator is superior. I have a specialized fuse comp. 2021
got the same bike, dropped my eliminators for Maxxis Aggressors. my bike is much much faster!
At $11,200 I'll need a lottery win!
Yea, 27.5 wheels is such a marketing gimmick.
Not sure you can get shipped canyon, rose or radon bikes to the USA?
The Canyon is heavier and has a Horst link its more comparable to a Stumpy EVO and more enduro/downhill than a good pedaling platform.
you first comment must to be frame size. do you understand that it is very important in any bike review? do you?
God Bless!
My first ride video comes out Sunday and I do mention the flex seat stays.
@@ClintGibbs I have 2nd and 3rd degree burns to my knees can't ride for weeks... counting on you riding for me for awhile ;-P
